Japan: Nintendo Switch Has Now Outsold Wii U Lifetime Sales In Less Than A Year

We knew it was bound to happen, but it’s been confirmed today that the Nintendo Switch has now outsold the Wii U lifetime sales in less than a year in Japan. Between December 2012 to December 2017 Nintendo’s struggling Wii U console sold 3.3 million units. Now as of March 3rd 2017 to December 24, 2017 Nintendo has shifted 3.3 million Nintendo Switch consoles. This means that the Nintendo Switch has outsold the Wii U is less than a year, which is extremely encouraging for the system going forward.

  1. That’s awesome and kind of staggering! Imagine if they’d have just developed Switch in 2012 and just binned the Wii U concept. However I think they needed a practice shot with Wii U to decide how NOT to do things. The Nintendo of Wii U era was pretty ignorant to what was going on around them

      1. I disagree with this. The software drought at the beginning of the Wii U was down to difficulty developing HD games – they were behind the curve. And to bookend that, towards the end of the consoles life, all the good games were developed for Switch. Yes, Odyssey was originally intended for Wii U. Along with other titles. We got pap like Animal Crossing amiibo whatsit as a token gesture just so people couldn’t say Nintendo abandoned the platform

3.3m Wii U sold in Japan. The other 10m & something was scattered across the globe. When you take that into consideration, the Wii U truly was… A massive failure. :/
