Zelda Director Talks About The Reward For Finding All Korok Seeds

IGN managed to catch up with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi to talk to him about the unique prize for collecting all 900 Korok Seeds and why they chose such a random prize. Here’s what he had to say:

“We just kind of thought it would be funny to make that a big joke. It’s just the backstory, the kind of hidden kind of thing in the game the whole way is that the Korok seeds are actually Korok poop.”

  1. Poop’s always good for plants, I use cow poop a lot in majority of my grows.

Speaking of, major props to California on the Legalization.

On a side note, way to many people are bitching over this seed hunting, I’ve loved every little puzzle it’s taken to unlock the one’s I’ve found.

  2. I think I only found 200-something Korok seeds/poop in my game before I stopped playing (I shall return some day for the DLC). I was pretty satisfied with the size of my inventory, so I didn’t really care much about actually TRYING to seek every Korok. But it definitely should have been some sort of spectacular prize for all of that hard work.

    1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

      ||Basically what you can say about Ballad of the Champions, the reward was utterly useless…||

          ||It is not entirely pointless, you get to battle the most entertaining enemy and some areas are quite satisfying to go through…||

  3. Regardless, their purpose was to reward exploration, so mission accomplished. Also props to anyone who collected them all.

    1. But then why bother if the end result is meaningless? I expect something for spending HOURS on a video game. Anyway, the reward should be to turn something into gold or if it’s a weapon/shield, make it invulnerable and powerful as a reward. Imagine having a golden Master Sword with high damage and can shoot beams without needing full health. FUCK YES I would go out of my way to earn that.

      1. Are there many players who would have any need for an in game reward after completing this? It’s seriously the end game of the end game… I’ll take a good joke over an in game item I’d never use. You still get a trophy. And it’s a poop. Because turns out you’ve just been picking up these guys little poops. That’s hilarious.

        1. Then feel free to waste time for no incentive. You’re like those morons bashing Nintendo for not having similar achievement system that doesn’t reward or unlock shit, making it borderline pointless.

          1. Not quite. I think achievement systems ARE pointless, but I appreciate that some people like it. I turn Steam achievement notifications off because I think they’re annoying. I also wouldn’t waste my time finding all the Korok seeds, because I think that’s also pointless, even if they offered a more tangible reward. You’re like what happens when the Lord of the Flies discovers the internet.

  4. Problem is, if you give an actual good reward for finding all korok seeds, you will have a lot of players that feel like they HAVE TO do it. And instead of a few people complaining about the bad reward you would see even more people complaining about how hard it is to get that reward…

And to be honest: The fact that it shouldn’t be an actual goal to collect all of these should be clear simply by the amount… A reward wasn’t to be expected at all. Not to say that it is wrong to collect them, but it should be clear that this is a goal comparable to achievement hunting.

I am actually surprised that there is any kind of reward at all.

    1. I’m one of those people who feels compelled to 100% games they play, so it wasn’t about a reward for me, but rather the satisfaction of knowing that I’ve 100%’ed the game.

  5. from my viewpoint, the main point of the Korok seeds was the expanded inventory, and maxing out the inventory was the main reward for finding enough seeds. All the extra seeds were there to make sure the average player could find enough seeds to get most, if not all, of the extra inventory slots. The final reward for finding all of them was supposed to just be a little bonus at the end for people who were insane enough to get them all. Because otherwise people would complain that they got nothing after getting all the seeds. But they also wouldn’t want to add something major or helpful for two reasons: 1, it was likely that would be the very last thing you finished, so there would be little point in it. And 2, if they did, people would be more likely to thing they were supposed to get all 900+ seeds, which would likely sour their opinion of the game as a whole. So they just decided to make it a little joke item, hoping that the playerbase would get a small chuckle out of it.

    1. I think the main, main point was to drive exploration. So they wanted you to explore and climb, and the this was how they answered why you should. You get small little positive reinforcements to push you to explore, and those rewards feed your inventory expansion which is useful, but they’re literally trying to modify player behavior with these things. But yeah, I agree, the 900+ was never built to be found on one playthrough and the reward should never be something to drive the average player to do it. The fact that I found a boatload of these and could do another four playthoughs while never finding the same seeds and still get all I need is great.

People do this crap just to check off achievement lists all the time, so I don’t see how a good joke and a poop trophy is somehow insufficient.
