Japan: Splatoon 2 Is The First Console Game To Sell Over 2 Million In 8 Years

If you check out the Media Create charts we publish on a Wednesday you’ll notice that Splatoon 2 is absolutely killing it in Japan. Interestingly, it has been discovered that Splatoon 2 is the first console game in Japan to sell over two million units in a staggering eight years. It won’t last with Pokemon on the horizon for the Nintendo Switch, but it’s certainly extremely encouraging news for Nintendo.

  1. I find it hard to believe that in a land where video gaming was born, NONE of ANY video games since the beginning of time havent sold over 2 million copies in a populated island nation of a couple dozen million of people. lol

If I’m not mistaken, video games originated in the United States, through Atari, not in Japan.

      1. I’m not sure if you are correct with video games originating from the United States but you are not correct if the first home console. The first home console or first generation of home consoles is the Magnavox Odyssey which came out in 1972.

From Google after searching “where did video games originate from”: In October 1958, Physicist William Higinbotham created what is thought to be the first video game. It was a very simple tennis game, similar to the classic 1970s video game Pong, and it was quite a hit at a Brookhaven National Laboratory open house.

Bah! I should have added something that little quote doesn’t mention: he was an American physicist.

    2. As they said, first home console game in Japan to sell over 2mil *in the last 8 years*.
Since last gen (PS3/360/Wii U) Japan has shifted to portable/mobile gaming.

    1. I’m pretty sure the article said first *console* (as in home console) game to sell over 2million in 8 years, not first portable game.

(Dont know why i cant reply to your comment below)
According to Media Create & Famitsu, who both do sale numbers for Japan, Mario Kart Wii crossed that 2 mil mark in Japan by end of Dec 2008.
This would still make this article correct as that would be more than 8 years ago.
