No doubt if you’re part of the Super Smash Brothers community you will have heard of Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios. Barrios has announced today that he’s retiring from the competitive scene after years of wins. Game Informer says that Barrios has a world record for most consecutive tournament wins in the game, at 53 wins in a row. Here’s what he has to say about why he’s decided to take a step back from the competitive scene for the time being.
“I love this game, I really do,” Barrios posted on Twitter. “However, I just don’t have that ‘fire’ that I used to have for Smash 4. I used to be able to push myself so easily and without effort back in the day . . . but nowadays, I pretty much have to force myself to do it.”
“I anticipate I will want to participate once again in tournaments once the next iteration of Smash Bros. is on the horizon,”
“I will stream Smash and make Youtube video [sic] and all that fun stuff. It’s strictly competing, like in highly stressful tournaments and super competitive rankings that I’m moving away from.”
“I want to write that book I always dream about,” he said in his statement. “I want to learn a third language and allow myself to experience a different world. I want to take care of my body the way it deserves to be treated as I age more moving forward.”

I patiently await his return, whenever that may be. I’ve always enjoyed watching his tournament sets and his style. Good on him though for recognizing that his own passion has faded and taking a step back, instead of prolonging it and doing something he doesn’t enjoy.

he should of retired at 50-53 wins.. he would of been a true legend!
I have seen videos of him in competitions. I wonder how he became so good at playing Smash? It can’t be just training, as everyone in these competitions also train.
He used to grind for like 8 hours a day when he was younger, probably the hardest working smasher out there
8 straight hours!? That’s a lot of time playing. The most time I’ve played without stopping was like 5 hours or less and in these last years I mostly play 3 hours in the day and 3 hours by night fall.
