Nintendo: Here’s The First Look At Nintendo Labo

Introducing Nintendo Labo, a new line of interactive make, play and discover experiences designed to inspire creative minds and playful hearts alike. Together with the Nintendo Switch console, the Nintendo Labo kits provide the tools and technology to make fun DIY creations, play games with your creations, and discover how Nintendo Switch technology shapes ideas into reality.* Nintendo Labo launches on 27th April across Europe, 20th April US. You can watch the First Look at Nintendo Labo trailer at the all-new YouTube channel.

Building on the history of Nintendo, which is rooted in innovative entertainment and gameplay experiences, Nintendo Labo continues the company’s mission of putting smiles on people’s faces. With each Nintendo Labo kit, inspired minds across all generations can transform modular sheets of cardboard – specially designed to interact with the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con controllers – into interactive creations called Toy-Con. From a piano to a motorbike, a robot and more, each Toy-Con comes to life when combined with the Nintendo Switch in different ways. As you make, you will have fun discovering how the technology works and even invent new ways to play with each Toy-Con.

For example, you can make a functioning 13-key piano that brings your musical arrangements to life once the Nintendo Switch console and Right Joy-Con controller are inserted. As you play, the IR Motion Camera in the Right Joy-Con detects which keys are pressed and plays each note through the console’s built-in speakers. Budding musicians can also experiment with their own musical creations.

Or, you can take control of your very own motorbike by constructing a functioning set of handlebars, with a Joy-Con inserted in each side and the Nintendo Switch console cradled in the middle. Simply hit the ignition button, turn the right handle to engage the accelerator, and watch your adventure unfold on the Nintendo Switch screen, as you race to new destinations.

“Our goal is to put smiles on the faces of everyone Nintendo touches,” said Satoru Shibata, Nintendo of Europe’s President. “Nintendo Labo invites anyone with a creative mind and a playful heart to make, play and discover in new ways with Nintendo Switch. I personally hope to see many people enjoying making kits with their family members, with big smiles on their faces.”

With Nintendo Labo, making and discovering is just as much fun as playing. Every Toy-Con creation presents exciting challenges and varying degrees of complexity, so each one is a unique experience. Making Toy-Con is especially fun with family and friends, as you collaborate and share each other’s Nintendo Labo experiences. Once built, those with a creative touch can customise their Toy-Con creations with their own colouring pens, stickers and paint to give them a personal feel – the only limit is their imagination. A special Customisation Set that includes fun stencils, stickers and coloured tape will also be available to purchase from 27th April.

Nintendo Labo launches in Europe on 27th April with two kits: the Variety Kit and the Robot Kit. Both kits include everything you need to bring your Toy-Con to life, including the building materials and relevant Nintendo Switch software.

Variety Kit

With the Variety Kit, you can create many different Toy-Con, including Toy-Con RC Car, Toy-Con Fishing Rod, Toy-Con House, Toy-Con Motorbike and Toy-Con Piano.

·         Toy-Con RC Car: Insert the Left and Right Joy-Con into your newly built RC Car and control its movement using touch screen controls on the Nintendo Switch. The HD rumble feature in the Joy-Con controllers will cause vibrations that move the car in the direction you choose. Materials to construct two RC Cars are included.

·         Toy-Con Fishing Rod: Construct the Fishing Rod with an active, rotating reel that is attached by string to a cradle holding the Nintendo Switch console. Catch one of many exotic fish shown swimming on the Nintendo Switch screen by casting your Fishing Rod and unwinding the reel to lower the hook. Once you feel a vibration from the Joy-Con inserted in the reel, you must crank the reel quickly and tug the Fishing Rod upwards to try and complete the catch.

·         Toy-Con House: By inserting various assembled blocks into openings in the sides and bottom of the House, you can interact, feed and play games with a cute creature on the front-facing Nintendo Switch screen. Each differently shaped block is detected by the IR Motion Camera on the Right Joy-Con inserted on top of the House.

·         Toy-Con Motorbike: Insert each Joy-Con into an assembled set of handlebars to drive a motorbike on the Nintendo Switch screen. Pressing the ignition button starts the engine, twisting the right handle activates the throttle, and leaning your body or turning the handlebars left and right controls the motorbike.

·         Toy-Con Piano: After assembling a beautifully crafted 13-key piano and inserting the Nintendo Switch console and Joy-Con, you can create your own music by pressing different keys. You can even insert different assembled knobs to create new sound effects and tones.

Robot Kit

·         Toy-Con Robot: Create a wearable robot suit, and insert the Left and Right Joy-Con into the designated slots on the backpack and visor to assume control of the robot, which is shown on the TV when the Nintendo Switch console is docked. Enjoy a variety of fun game-play experiences, including Robot mode, where you can destroy in-game buildings and UFOs.

You could be among the first to experience Nintendo Labo by applying to attend a Nintendo Labo Workshop. 1. I guess this is sort of a version of VR lol

This is pretty cool. Nintendo should have embraced the DIY community earlier. People have been doing cool things with their hardware since the Wii Remote back in the day. I could imagine a decent amount of maker picking up a Wii U gamepad to control robots if they had sold Gamepad’s in stores.

  1. I don’t understand if the cardboard is actually needed or not. Like, do the Joy-Cons sense it or something? I doubt it. Doesn’t look like it’s for me though.

      1. Nah, no sensors in the cardboard. At least not in something like the piano. The JoyCon-R has an infrared camera and four infrared LEDS, so when you point the controller into the closed-off back of the piano, it can sense which keys are being pushed by the intensity of the IR light hitting each key. My guess is that it probably might have trouble detecting when two or more keys are played though.

    1. Most of it is handled by using the IR-camera on the right JoyCon to detect shapes, and the motion control in both to detect movement

      1. “I seriously thought they learned their lesson from the stupid casual phase. I guess not. X(”

Huh? Their casual phase(s) was their most successful period. The Wii U wasn’t a casual system *at all*. It was populated primarily with gamecube style games.

        1. And also the period where gamers lost hope of Nintendo’s hardcore audience attraction/games and Wii U is a casual system trying to continue the last casual system with another gimmick becoming an afterthought. GameCube wasn’t even a thing among Wii U fool. Smash 4 isn’t an excuse for it either.

      2. Reminder: Nintendo has been around for nearly 150 years. They are a TOY company first and foremost that has developed into a gaming company only in the last 40 years. They also said that this is meant for kids.

      3. You can’t take out the innovative and creative side of Nintendo… they don’t want to completely abandon the kids and kids at heart. They never said that they are exclusively about the hardcores. I do see where you are coming from though, if this does succeed I hope they don’t tie all their games up with LABO. It should be its own distinct thing outside of the normal range of game offerings.

    2. They’ve stated you don’t need the cardboard, that they’ll provide the templates for free to download and print yourself. You would need something to house the Joy-Cons in and the console if applicable. I mean theoretically you could probably do some without it but it wouldn’t have any appeal since it wouldn’t be set up properly and you’d be mimicking it instead. The piano one would need the keys pushed, even if just registered by the IR Camera. The RC Car one would need a housing for the Joy-Cons for sure or you’d just have vibrating Joy-Cons on the floor. But the point is, you don’t need to buy the bundle with the cardboard. You can buy the software separately and download the templates if you wanna print it yourself, but that sounds like more trouble than it’s worth. I’d just get the kit.

  2. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||There you have it, our first protype Nintenformers program to increase our Hybrid potential to new heights…||

    ||We are the only thing that matters…||

      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        ||You are paying for the tool, the cardboxes is merely cosmetic and accessories for the most part…||

        ||And as long as the Nintendolings enjoy it, we have succeeded once again…||

        ||Now I have more important matters to attend, like chasing down a couple of Xbots…||

        1. Again, who is gonna go for this when the Switch is being marketed to be a universal console that’s finally serious about offering hardcore games? Tell Big N to put in Virtual Console (no more of that Neo Geo garbage), web browser, apps, system voice chat/messaging, longer game recordings and such instead of making art craft shit. We already have stuff for that and we don’t buy video game consoles for art crafts. Not one platform tried this particular thing before because it’s redundant and in 2018, non-existent.

    1. Trolls Anubis and Pimpwheel are trying to disrupt the atmosphere of My Nintendo News. Should we tell Sickr this matter?

      1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

        ||Not yet, they haven’t crossed the line, and Chief Ambassador Sickr already knows about Anubis and Pinwheel is just a worthless coward…||

    1. Looks awesome for kids. Watched with mine and they are very excited and feankly so am I… for them. Really going “out of the box” and I find the general internet reaction tp be expected but parents will want to get something like this for their kids.

    2. I think this might of been it, If people are hyped over this i’m really worried We have games like Fire Emblem & Prof Layton and other great games but Nintendo seems to going backwards and heading toward preschoolers which yes i can see being nice but isn’t the switch for more mature players (I’m aware they have to milk Mario until he’s as dried up as the Mummy Imotep) but come on Nintendo You won me with Fire Emblem and Professor Layton don’t make me go back to thinking Games are beneath me. (Or I just play Fire Emblem & Layton)

      1. Hirokaski, you’re still getting your Fire Emblem and Professor Layton, why can’t Nintendo create something imaginative and creative for children to enjoy? Nintendo is already catering to your tastes, they’re delivering another Metroid, a Fire Emblem, Mario is still fresh and fun. I think people are mistakingly thinking that this was supposed to be made for them, when it’s really a fun thing for children to get involved in. The only one who could make you think games are “beneath” you is yourself. NIntendo has always been a company that’s wanted to include everyone. Always has been, and by the looks of it, always will be. That’s just my two cents though.

        1. I respect your views and opinion. I just feel this won’t keep the children of today satisfied for longer than a week at best they are to in to the Mobile market or Call of Duty, so logically saying this will only appeal to the hardcore fanboys and girls.
Like it or not i feel i’m not mistaken on this hypothesis.

      2. No you are being ignorant and thinking only of yourself. The Nintendo Switch is for everyone not just one demographic. There are plenty of games for whatever age group there is and Nintendo would not be so stupid as to limit themselves to “mature players” only. They want to expand the number of people interested in gaming not just people who are already fans. It’s a hard concept for gamers to understand because many are selfish and think anything that isn’t aimed at them is terrible. You only seem interested in two game series anyway so as long as they are there you should be happy.

      3. This is a straight up childish and absurd reaction. This is like saying because Disney makes kiddie rides, you might give up on watching Deadpool if he becomes a Disney property. A product being made for someone who isn’t Hirokaski does not take something away from Hirokaski. Labo’s release, success, or failure, has absolutely no effect on the production of Fire Emblem or Layton games. The world doesn’t revolve around you.

      4. “I’m simply saying that something this basic isn’t really what i thought was worth hyping up.”

What hyping up? A one sentence notification of a 3 minute announcement video?

      5. Yeaaaah, my four year old isn’t into Call of Duty or mobile, and a crafty/gamey project like this is something she’d be super excited for. For example, we have an age appropriate robot kit with big chunky pieces and we build robots off the instructions every other day or so. She’d love to build a robot suit and then stomp around as one on TV. Nintendo knows exactly who they’re marketing for: the Switch has been brilliant as a gaming dad with the freedom to surrender the TV at a moments notice to play big games that target our nostalgia and introduce Nintendo to our kids.

They said it was going to be an announcement for kids. My kid would be into it.

      6. Dude- IT’S NOT FOR YOU! Lol, Nintendo isn’t gonna change their perspective to preschoolers & 1st graders.

This is just showing the SWITCH is not solely hardcore adult gaming. They also have something for children as well- That’s all. If it makes you feel better I won’t be spending $80 on this either. But I will admit this is really cool for kids. Out of everything they showed the piano has me intrigued.

        1. ok it’s creative but I just was saying it might not hold all children’s attention. Some it may while others it won’t that’s all i’m saying on the matter now as I’m not one to keep something like this going after i said what i wanted to say.

    1. Yeah, until you look at the prices. They want $69.99 for the “Variety Kit”, and $79.99 for the “Robot Kit”. Seems like a little too much for what seems to be a bare bones game with some cardboard thrown in. I don’t see kids playing with this stuff for more than a week, if even that.

      1. As a parent, I’m intrigued but waiting to hear about the software. The concepts great, an extra $10-20 for the cardboard accessories is fine, but the $60 game part of it needs to justify the cost. 1-2 Switch had some cool tech aspects but was a piss poor game. If they can make a good game that grabs my 4 year olds attention, and can really capture the magic of building something and having it come to life? I’m in.

      1. You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. You don’t even need to buy the cardboard. They’ll give you the designs for free. You’re paying for the game and have the option to have all the parts bundled.

        1. Again, WHO PLAYS WITH IT IN 2018? Of all the things to make, a goddamn cardboard building game? They’re trying to recover their PR by being serious with hardcore gaming and then they do this random shit which is a waste of resources and time for video game development. Playable Luigi? No. Here’s an orgy of cardboards. System Voice chat? Nope. Here’s some more cardboard. How about a web browser? Screw that too. Have some cardboard. X(

  3. Well, this looks like the most random thing, I don’t even know that to feel… but I totally dig that steering wheel, house, and robot, so I guess they got me. I just hope that the quality of the components will be good.

      1. Also Imagine a kit especially for The Legend of Zelda (either a 2.5D game or a 3D game) with a Master Sword and a Hylian Shield. That would be cool!

  4. See, and it is cool, and the piano is where I was almost sold… But I have a real piano, and I play it, so it would be annoying to me not to play a full song. So, cool for the people who buy this stuff, but I am not one of them.

  5. I err … Don’t understand :/… Can somebody explain it to me? …. Just seems more clutter for my no space left place hmmm

  6. We bought our 7 yr old daughter a switch for Christmas so this might be something she’ll use ( see what happens when it’s released).
Other than that you might be better off recycling your cardboard.

It’s sort of wonderful and pointless at the same. ( we’ll see ).

  7. Very interesting. What I would really like to see is normal nintendo games using it. I’d like to go fishing in Pokemon with my cardboard pole.

Although what I’m REALLY interested in seeing is how expensive these are in 20 years when 99.9% of them have been hopleessly destroyed.

  8. This could also be a fantastic present for a 2 yr old as they seem to play with the wrapping and boxes more than the contents inside !

  9. *Sweet Idea!
    *Cool for Kids!
    *Simplicity & Creativity!
    *A Fun Breakthrough in gaming!

…..i ain’t paying $80 for no damn cardboard! Lmbo, but on the other hand my only child is 22 years old- Lol. Admittedly- the piano has me intrigued.

  10. The way I see it, this would make a great arts and crafts time for a parent with a young child. Followed then by play time as they put the Toy-con to work. Or for those of us grownups who still love arts and crafts.
I’m really curious to see what sets three and four will be.

  12. Remember that kid from Japan who made a switch out of cardboard then one day his dad bought a Switch and stuck it in the cardboard shell ? It was really the prototype for NintendoLabo ! 😳 It was revealed months ago and we didn’t catch on ;)

    1. Don’t worry, we will have a proper new Zelda game and a Metroid Prime 4 that will ease your worries. Just wait till the next E3.

  13. I hope they mention that this must be keep out of water and cloudy days otherwise a lot of kids (the careless ones) will lose them quickly due to getting wet and eventually stink.

    1. What the heck!? What happened to my comment? It only posted the last part. Weird.

      Here it goes again….
This causes many more questions than answers. I would start asking those questions,
but I don’t want to be here forever. I don’t even know what to think. Cardboard? (o _ O)

  15. I have to admit, this is definately not what I was expecting. Leave it to Nintendo to come up with crazy ideas.
The idea is defiantely interesting, but I’m a little bit concerned they’re turning the Switch into a toy. On one hand you have games like DOOM and Dark Souls on the other hand you have this family friendly DIY Labo. I’m not saying it’s bad to be family friendly or that Nintendo needs more M rated games, but so far it looked like they were trying to turn the Switch into a core gamer friendly console and now… this? I’m not entirely sure what to make of it yet.
Let’s see how it works out.

  16. Reminder: Nintendo has been around for nearly 150 years. They are a TOY company first and foremost that has developed into a gaming company only in the last 40 years. They also said that this is meant for kids. You are paying for a GAME, not just the cardboard. I really hate that stupid neck beards are getting all butt-hurt about something that —shocker— isn’t meant for them.

  17. What’s this ****? Nintendo still doing useless experiments?
Someone even thought at a Nintendo Switch Mini as that big ‘revelation’… poor him. ^^

  19. Such a toxic discussion around this thing. Everybody seems like they have to fall on one extreme or the other. I fall in the middle where it’s just ok. I don’t think it is the second coming and I don’t think it’s garbage.

The thing is I’m the exact demographic they are aiming at. I’m a Nintendo fan, I have the Switch and two sets of Joy-Cons and my kids have been raised on creativity and Nintendo.

However, I still have real problems with the product. I won’t break it down here to clog up your comments as I wrote an article about it I’m sure people can find it hey want (I won’t spam your comments with a link), but I really wish discourse was a little more fair on this.

  20. Infinite Kalas X3, The Sonyendo King

I won’t deny it looks fun but it’s not my thing. Good for the kids & adults that like arts & crafts, though.
