Atari Explains Why They’re Using An Equity Crowdfunding Platform For RollerCoaster Tycoon Switch

Atari was met with a hefty amount of negative feedback when they announced that they are using an equity crowdfunding platform, StartEngine, to help bring RollerCoaster Tycoon to the Nintendo Switch. Polygon got to sit down with Fred Chesnais at Atari to speak more about their decision to bring the project to StartEngine. It’s worth noting that Atari has stated that they will bring the game to Nintendo switch no matter how much is gathered from investors.

Fred Chesnais, CEO of Atari Game Partners said the following on the matter:

“From a strategy perspective, as a publisher, we are doing this game,” Chesnais said. “From a financial perspective and cost of capital perspective, it makes sense for Atari to try and test some new sources of funding to see if these sources could be available down the road for more games.”

When put to task about the probability of reaching the campaign maximum of $1.07 million, the CEO had this to say:

“I don’t know,” he said. “For me, it’s irrelevant. What relevant for me is not the percentage of funding. What is relevant for me is, can crowdfunding constitute a source of financing for my portfolio of more than 200 games?”

With currently 81 days left of the campaign,  nine days into the campaign for the port of RollerCoaster Tycoon to the Nintendo Switch, Atari has earned less than $39,000. It has reached its goal of $10,000 so the equity can be collected.

    1. Funny how you always feel identified with the EMPIRE/FIRST ORDER… i always thought of Nintendo as the Light, Rebellion or equal. Nintendo always has been about fun, family, share and happiness because their light-hearted characters, still, Atari IS a disgusting Lifeform. keep the comments coming Commander.

    1. They are not gonna succeed reaching whatever BS goal they set up and I know damn well they’re just gonna take whatever money, not port that garbage and really piss the public off.

  1. Of course they didn’t actually need the funding. Atari has been making video games since before even Nintendo so a company that has survived that long should have little to no problems with being able to afford a project as simple as porting a phone game to a home console. The problem I have is that it’s the phone version which I and a lot of other people can easily get for free. I want Roller Coaster Tycoon on the Switch but I want a full fledged version not just a port of the phone game.

This isn’t that Atari. That Atari hasn’t existed in ages. These are the people who bought the name.

  2. I want the old Atari back. The Atari that was actually AWESOME! Then again, would even THEY survive in today’s industry, against giants like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? They might have only been awesome because games weren’t very demanding or hard to make back then.
