Nintendo Has Confirmed The Animated Super Mario Movie

It was only a matter of time, but Nintendo has officially confirmed the animated Super Mario Bros. movie. Nintendo is partnering with Illumination to make the movie. The movie will be co-produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri. The announcement was made on Twitter, so the tweet can be seen down below. Feel free to check it out.

  1. Hopefully it would take notes from the Super Mario Adventures comic book and give the characters some rather funny characterization as well as make it feel like it could take place in the Super Mario Bros. Universe.

I also hope it does a better job than that Ratchet and Clank movie, that movie was a total letdown.

  2. Part of me hopes that they’ll partner with Intelligent Systems and come up with a funny, witty and charming story seeing as they were more than capable of doing so with PPTTYD.

    1. Sadly, I wonder if Intelligent Systems even has the capability to bring back the creativity they showed in TTYD.

  3. Talk about a great partnership. Though I’m not a fan of the despicable me or minions,I think they’re a good fit to flesh out the mario universe in film.

  4. The fact that it’s Illumination has me a little worried. They don’t usually hold the same high standards as someone like Pixar or Disney. On the other hand, maybe Nintendo learned their lesson with the the first SMB movie and were holding out until they had a great script. Hoping it appeals to kids AND adults.

      1. True but I get what the guy above your reply means. I don’t understand why they didn’t choose someone better like DreamWorks or Pixar. Also I’m not a fan of the movies of Illumination.

  5. Not a bad choice. I like Illumination’s art style for their movies, so I think it’ll work well for Mario.

Wonder what they’ll do for story.

  6. Since Shigeru Miyamoto is one of the co producers, I have faith that this will be good. But I just can’t get excited over something that’s animated. I may end up loving it, but just can’t get excited. I always wanted another live action Super Mario movie. One that’s done RIGHT, and stays true to the source material. .

    1. On the contrary. There is a thin line between Genius and Madness… I think Miyamoto has slightly crossed that line from former to latter.

It’s a movie so I’m not too worried. Since gameplay won’t be a thing, Miyamoto will be forced to think of how to make the movie fun by way of the story.

As much as I’d prefer someone more skilled to take a crack at a live action Super Mario movie to make up for the horrible (but still entertaining) Super Mario Bros movie from the early 90s, I’ll so take an animated movie if it’s got a good enough story on par with the first 2 Paper Mario games.

  8. Oh shit…please don’t suck. I still won’t forget how bad the Mario Bros. movie was, how semi-cringe the voice over was in Sunshine and the animation work of that unholy Donkey Kong Country show…*shivers*

If the Super Mario Bros movie had came out before the games did, it might have been well received because the acting isn’t exactly terrible; it’s not Super Mario great, either, but not terrible. But as it stands, it’s one of those movies that’s so bad it manages to be entertaining. It’s one of my guilty pleasures. (Or maybe that’s my nostalgia talking. I’ll end up watching it again sooner or later, so we’ll see if I can still enjoy it from when I watched it many years ago as a kid.)

      1. It’s still terrible regardless of being adapted or not. I have nothing against Bob who I loved his acting work in Roger Rabbit but his talent was wasted in that shit movie which spawned the nasty trend of incorrect movie-game adaption.
