Super Mario Odyssey has been a huge hit for Nintendo as we found out earlier in the week that it has sold a more than impressive 9.07 million copies worldwide by the end of 2017. You may be wondering how this stacks up against Mario’s other 3D outings such as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64. Well, here’s the data we have so far.
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii): 12.76 million
- Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64): 11.91 million
- Super Mario 3D Land (3DS): 11.40 million
- Super Mario 64 DS (DS): 11.06 million
- Super Mario Odyssey (Switch): 9.07 million
- Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii): 7.67 million
- Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube): 6.31 million
- Super Mario 3D World (Wii U): 5.70 million
This will easily be the best selling 3D Mario so far, maybe even the first to hit 20 million. It’s selling like 2D Mario.
Yup. 100% gonna pass Galaxy. We’re talking 9 mill in two months… ON NEW HARDWARE
Since they’ve stated they want this to be a long lasting evergreen title, and Nintendo games will continue to get the continued support/dlc treatment, it will definitely top galaxy
Wow I never thought a main Mario title would get DLC. Crazy.
Agreed. But it’s a good kind of DLC (free, new mode etc)
100% will surpass Galaxy 1. 9 Million in 2 months is insane. The Mario appeal just ceases to slow down.
What the fuck? It already topped 9 million? @w@ Damn.
I guess sales are based on:
-The popularity of the system (everyone aside from Nintendo fans and gamers)
-The iconicness of the game (Super Mario 64 being the first 3D game at the time).
-The variety in the game (sorry SMG2).
It’s a beast.
With such a sales its almost guaranteed that there will be a sequel. The next Odyssey will probably have 1,500 power moons, perhaps a bit more.
It’ll have more Power Moons than Pokemon will have more..Pokemon by then. XD
Lol XD
By next week it should top Mario Galaxy…and I don’t even think this counts digital downloads.
I seriously LOVE that beautiful game and wish it had spiritually follow the sandbox philosophy of 64. Although it kinda did but shrunk and segregated said levels into multiple sections.
I just hope Odyssey isn’t what Mario will be from now on. I don’t want Mario to be easy from start to finish
Depends on what you define as the end. If you mean the end being where you defeat bowser, yeah that was easy. But if you mean the ending as being collecting all of the power moons. That was a lot harder. (Spoiler) The darker side of the moon was rough! And some of those moons on the dark side of the moon took a long time as well. I collected them all and I think it got plenty hard enough, and I think after collecting them all is where the real end is.
It’s not exactly easy because a few boss battles did kick my veteran ass and some Moons are cleverly hidden. In fact, it’s so we’ll hidden that you won’t figure out unless you view a guide; book or YouTube.
You should look into New Mario Bros. and 3D Land/World because those games are guilty of being too easy.
Speaking of Super Mario Odyssey, a lot of the power moons are so easy to get that it doesn’t feel the least bit rewarding when collecting them. And why are the boss battles so easy (those rabbit characters)? A kid in kindergarten can beat them.
What Mario games that aren’t RPGs have you been playing that has had hard bosses?
Super Mario 3D World actually did pretty good.
No that game is super fucking easy and more of the same as 3D Land.
(Shit! Ignore that!)
Super Mario 3D World actually did pretty good.
Super Mario Sunshine deserved more sales than that. MUCH more. That’s still one of my favorite Mario games.
Indeed, it deserves more sales. Perhaps Nintendo will make a remake just like they did with Mario 64.
Well because of it’s somewhat awkward camera system and questionable voice acting (still nowhere near as bad as current Sonic games) plus the GameCube selling..kinda low is why that game was sold a bit lesser than more 3D Mario games.
