Here’s How Super Mario Odyssey Sales Stack Up Against Other 3D Mario Games So Far

Super Mario Odyssey has been a huge hit for Nintendo as we found out earlier in the week that it has sold a more than impressive 9.07 million copies worldwide by the end of 2017. You may be wondering how this stacks up against Mario’s other 3D outings such as Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64. Well, here’s the data we have so far.

  1. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii): 12.76 million
  2. Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64): 11.91 million
  3. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS): 11.40 million
  4. Super Mario 64 DS (DS): 11.06 million
  5. Super Mario Odyssey (Switch): 9.07 million
  6. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii): 7.67 million
  7. Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube): 6.31 million
  8. Super Mario 3D World (Wii U): 5.70 million

  1. This will easily be the best selling 3D Mario so far, maybe even the first to hit 20 million. It’s selling like 2D Mario.

  2. Since they’ve stated they want this to be a long lasting evergreen title, and Nintendo games will continue to get the continued support/dlc treatment, it will definitely top galaxy

  3. I guess sales are based on:

-The popularity of the system (everyone aside from Nintendo fans and gamers)
-The iconicness of the game (Super Mario 64 being the first 3D game at the time).
-The variety in the game (sorry SMG2).

  4. With such a sales its almost guaranteed that there will be a sequel. The next Odyssey will probably have 1,500 power moons, perhaps a bit more.

    1. I seriously LOVE that beautiful game and wish it had spiritually follow the sandbox philosophy of 64. Although it kinda did but shrunk and segregated said levels into multiple sections.

    1. Depends on what you define as the end. If you mean the end being where you defeat bowser, yeah that was easy. But if you mean the ending as being collecting all of the power moons. That was a lot harder. (Spoiler) The darker side of the moon was rough! And some of those moons on the dark side of the moon took a long time as well. I collected them all and I think it got plenty hard enough, and I think after collecting them all is where the real end is.

    2. It’s not exactly easy because a few boss battles did kick my veteran ass and some Moons are cleverly hidden. In fact, it’s so we’ll hidden that you won’t figure out unless you view a guide; book or YouTube.

    1. Well because of it’s somewhat awkward camera system and questionable voice acting (still nowhere near as bad as current Sonic games) plus the GameCube selling..kinda low is why that game was sold a bit lesser than more 3D Mario games.
