Shigeru Miyamoto was part of Nintendo’s financial results briefing Q&A, where he answered some questions about the Super Mario Bros. animated movie. The movie was confirmed at the briefing, and we got our first info on what the movie will be like. Miyamoto said that he has been considering an animated movie for “many years”, even though he feels that creating games and movies “aren’t really that similar”. He feels that Interactive and passive media are very different, so Miyamoto says that he’d like to “have a movie expert work on it”. He was introduced to Illumination by Universal Parks & Resorts during his meetings with many movie directors and producers.
Miyamoto recalled a conversation with Illumination founder Chris Meledandri. Miyamoto said to Meledandri that “he had read Miyamoto’s interviews and said that the ways they create are similar”. Eventually, the pair ended up having a mutual understanding. This resulted in the desire to do something together. Meledandri also says that he is “focused on making the film with a reasonable cost and deadline in order for it to be a success”. As for the movie itself, Miyamoto feels that “if they couldn’t make something interesting, then it would be better to quit”. The movie has already had multiple meetings for the screenplay, and it was confirmed that the project has “actually progressed very far”.
I’m optimistic for this. I think Illumination is better than people give them credit for.
I mean, sure Minions isn’t really for anyone but they’ve made more good movies (or at least serviceable) than bad ones.
They did well for Despicable Me trilogy. Let’s see where this goes. Also, Minions are way better than those fucking Ravin Rabbids.
So true, but neither are suitable for the Mario franchise.
Then who is?
Well when I say neither, I refer to the tone of writing associated with those franchises. If Nintendo want to collaborate with people who have experience with animated movies, they should team up with the people doing the Klonoa movie, or the team behind Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva.
It should be playful and lighthearted, yet epic and adventurous. Maybe they should just collaborate with Sakurai’s writers (not the same people who did Uprising).
They are also a marketing genius with the Minions invading every form of merchandise in 2015.
For the first time in a long while, I actually have faith in Miyamoto again. I enjoyed the Pikmin shorts he did a few years back for Wii U’s HD version and 3DS’s 3D version (I still have the 3D version downloaded on my n3DS.)
Those shorts still exist?
Yep. Still in the eShop for buying. One of the few good things that came from the Wii U era.
If it’s also on 3DS, I would say it’s best thing on IT. Wii U doesn’t exist.
Agreed with the statement about movies and games are different where nowadays there is someone that says both things are the same
The format of my text is wrong. Sorry 🦊

Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck and for the love of God, PLEASE DONT SUCK! X(
I’m sure it’ll be fine. If Miyamoto was actually involved with the live action Super Mario Bros movie from the 90s, I’m sure that movie would have been more true to the games.
And that’s why they’re not comfortable doing this gig the whole time. Why you think the Metroid movie idea never took off when the Prime series was popular?
With what technology and franchise lore in 1993?
If they had did a Metroid movie them, it probably would’ve resulted in an early version of Other M.
Except they turn Samus into a huge cunt crying “daddy” for Adam after so many insults and shit from him for no reason. The movie would’ve done much better than Other Melodrama.
I remember hearing about a Metroid movie script. In it, Samus was a scientist who doned her creation, the Power Suit in order to well, I sort off was too disgusted to remember the rest of it.
Ew… That’d be like the Fantastic Four creating dimension hopping technology that got infected by another dimension’s toxic waste that mutated them instead of being astronauts that got hit by a wave of cosmic energy from their own home universe that mutated them. Oh wait..!
Hopefully Mario talks in this, and isn’t a mute like in his games.
The fact that he needs a “movie expert” to work on it, gives my doubts about the writing quality of the movie (especially in the age of dank memes and clunky references to modern trends)
All I want is to see peach in cg animation. She better be cute as hell illumination. I’m watching you
The models will be video game accurate like Wreck It Ralph.
Pauline is cuter than Peach. I want to see Pauline sing a movie theme similar to Jump up Superstar.
I’m fine with either but both would be nice.
I want all three princesses and Pauline.
So, I guess this movie would make Mario a Super Star?
I don’t like that the subjects of “reasonable cost and deadline” are the first thing brought up. Illumination is known for cheap, uninspired movies with no art. This just confirms they have not changed their process for this movie. My outlook on it has dimmed further.
Absolutely brilliant, I can’t wait for this.
