Nintendo Had Considered Letting Users Control The Weather In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

Game Informer recently had the chance to interview The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. Interestingly, he revealed that early on in the game’s development the team had considered giving players that chance to control the weather system in the game, but they decided that the unpredictability of the weather made the game more fun, so they scrapped that idea.

“Initially we did consider giving players control of the weather, but realised not being able to control it is much more fun. Controlling it wasn’t really fitting in this game. In Ocarina of Time, you were in places that were just sunny or raining. That was the way the players were able to control that. Adding in the weather control would have increased the number of variables in the world. It was more interesting to have Link against nature, not controlling it. That ended up being more natural and fun.”

  1. They should’ve given you the option to do this at one point. I love playing games in rain, but it isn’t fun when I’m in the middle of a climb and have to give up when it starts raining.

  2. There was so many times in this game where I got ticked off at the rain because I couldn’t climb a mountain without sliding. I would have loved to be able to stop the rain at moments like that. Then again, not being able to stop it does provide more of a challenge.

  3. Def agree the weather should be as natural occurring as possible, but it was a pain when you wanted to climb and then it started raining. There should of been an obtainable item to allow climbing in the rain. That would of been cool and problem solved.

    1. I agree, there should be some way to overcome the rain. That way it would feel more like when you expand your stamina meter and become able to reach new places by climbing. As it is it’s just the game preventing you from climbing at random, and it even takes away your ability to make campfires which could be used to wait out the rain.

  4. Funny how we could never get it to rain to farm bomb arrows, but always rained going on a hike. Upgraded climbers gear could have given players the ability to climb in the rain…. but nope. Just speed and duration.

    1. Yes. I wanted the Hookshot to be in the game. Would’ve been very useful for climbing and fun for fighting enemies like grabbing them from a distance or items/weapons in a quick draw manner.

Yes. It was so fun to be climbing a high fucking mountain only to have it rain half way up and being sent falling all the way back down to the bottom and having to wait for the rain to stop, which would take forever sometimes, and having to start all over again! Yes! So very fucking fun! I had a fucking blast and the time of my life! *rolls eyes*

That aside, the rain being natural was nice sometimes. Still would have liked to upgrade the climber’s gear to allow climbing in the rain instead of the lame shit it did get.

  6. I loved the game so freaking much, but there were parts that I just put the controller aside and do other things instead of playing, just to wait the rain was over.
I always thought that idea came when some genius in Nintendo said “Hey, people, you know how incredible fun and amusing is to wait to rain to stop in real life, why won’t we put that into the game!!”.
I’m not against the idea, the first couple of times is interesting, then it turns just annoying. I was really hoping they added clothes for wet climb or some magical shit so rain wont fuck you up in the middle of your game.

  7. The thing I missed in Breath Of The Wild is having a musical instrument. In pretty much every Zelda game, Link had some sort of magical instrument that unlocked secrets. Whether it was a flute, Ocarina or a wand. But BOTW was probably the first Zelda game that I know of that didn’t have ANY. Though I can’t recall Twilight Princess having one. Did Skyward Sword? Hmm……..can’t remember.

Twilight Princess had the stones you howled at but those were scattered around Hyrule so not really an instrument you carried with you. In Skyward Sword, there was the Goddess’s (aka Hylia’s) Harp.

    2. Neither did Phantom Hourglass or all 3 multiplayer games. Twilight Princess kind of had the howling, if you can count that.
