Nintendo filing trademarks is nothing out of the ordinary, and Nintendo has recently filed a new one. However, what they’re trying to trademark may surprise you. Nintendo Co., Ltd., Creatures Co., Ltd. and Game Freak Inc. have filed a trademark application for the logo that appears on the hat of Ash Ketchum in the Pokemon anime. According to the application, this is being done for clothing purposes.

Yes and no. The Pokemon Company is owned by Nintendo, Creatures, and Game Freak. Nintendo is the sole owner of the Pokemon trademark, but the copyright is shared between the 3 companies. The Pokemon Company does brand management and licensing.
