Digital Foundry Retro always gives interesting insights into video gaming history of the past, whether it be video games, or hardware. This time the team have looked at the battle between Sony’s PlayStation Portable the PSP and Nintendo’s revolutionary Nintendo DS console. This specific video looks at the lead up to E3 2004 where both systems were revealed. Obviously one system took the world by storm while the other didn’t quite live up to its potential.
“Nintendo DS vs Sony PSP – when these two handhelds debuted at E3 2004, it looked like the most one-sided console war ever, but history would go on to tell a very different story. Join John and Rich for this look back over the reveal of two very different mobile devices, each of which would help define the template of handheld gaming – right up until today.”

PSP had Monster Hunter so it won by default.
Didn’t live up to its potential? PSP did quite okey øast I check? Ofc DS crushed it in sales numbers, but it didn’t flop by any means.
last I checked* lol

riveting…
I liked the portable joystick PSP tried to do. Didn’t like anything else about it, really.
The lessons of Gameboy should have been learned. The 3 P’s of handheld gaming were price, portability and Pokémon, and NOT power. DS was better for all 3* so we should always have expected it to defeat PSP. Game Gear hugely outpowered the original Gameboy, but it got destroyed. PSP did well to do as well as it did, but it did lack software compared to DS and was too expensive, meaning it was ultimately outsold 2 to 1 in what should have been a predictable manner.
*with regards to portability, the flip screen of DS always made it easier to carry even before DS Lite, and the game cards were way better than UMDs
It was the main Monster Hunter-platform for years, which is a reason enough for having to buy it xP
