Blizzard Says Overwatch Nintendo Switch Port And Mobile Ports Are Unlikely

GameSpot managed to meet the team behind the acclaimed Overwatch as the game recently celebrated its second anniversary. Blizzard, the company behind the multiplayer game, suggested it is unlikely that the game will make its way onto the Nintendo Switch due to the differences in the hardware. The team understands that the Switch is very popular, but they are focussed on supporting the current platforms.

“I think it is one of those things that we constantly evaluate. Where technology is going; where the industry is going. There are challenges in running on the platforms that we’re not already on, otherwise we would probably already be on some of those other platforms. We’ll see where things go. Certainly, there is a huge number of people out there who have Nintendo Switch and mobile phones, but right now, the core development team is focused on supporting the live game.”

  1. did he just compare the switch hardware power to a modid he just compared switch hardware power to a mobile phone?bile phone?

    1. He just said it was in the same kind of hardware. Most phones use ArM-architecture just like Switch. He the phone-thing is probably just a response for the Fortnite and PUBG phone-ports.

    2. Well, the Switch is powered by the same tech that we use to power phones and tablets. Its guts are a slight upgrade from my Nvidia tablet and equal to their Shield TV box. Technically speaking, the Switch’s hardware is several years behind today’s high end phones, it’s CPU is a good deal less powerful, and it’s even been downclocked from stock speeds. Fortunately, the Tegra X1’s GPU is still great for games because it’s the only one really tooled for powerful, PC-like gaming. Beyond their insides, they both offer portable gaming and they’re the last major game devices that would need and Overwatch port. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t be thinking about them in similar ways.

That doesn’t mean that the Shield Tablet, Shield TV, or Switch aren’t awesome, because they’re really powerful for what they are. That’s why I own them and still haven’t bothered to put money into a good phone. But no matter how hard we wish, we can’t make the Tegra X1 a more powerful chip than it is.

      1. True. A lot of people think optimisation is a process that will always improve drastically and endlessly to new height forever. But X1 is what it is. A 15W device that can run Doom. Impressive stuff indeed, but it cannot be more than that as you say.

              1. Remember I read a comment once where it was written Xbox 360 did get hardware updates through the net and was getting more powerful all the time, and had passed PC’s a long time ago. I sincerely hope it was trolling, but then again this is the Internet.

  2. I hope they make a discussion about putting it on the switch or not. There is alot of few games out there who will be greatful to have there games on Nintendo Switch soon.

  3. It’s for the best. It’s bad enough people think they want an Undertale character in smash, we don’t need any more IPs on Nintendo consoles. Besides, Overwatch hasn’t been good recently.

    1. I’m a die hard Nintendo fan since the NES, love me my Nintendo nostalgia, and I’m all about that first party gaming… but I’ve never thought we needed LESS new IP and new ideas. I’ll be the first in line for Mario 36, but give me something fresh too.

  4. Overwatch is old news. I played it to death on PC. It’s boring at this point. Their events and additions have become stale unfortunately. I did enjoy it for a while, but I haven’t touched it since the Switch came out. And seeing as most people who were interested have probably played it by now, this isn’t a big loss. I don’t think it would make a lot of sense on the Switch anyway. Being an always online game and all.

    1. Some of these evergreen titles can have pretty long legs because children are aging into the game. They may have had older siblings playing and finally got permission or they just got their first system and their friends told them about it, etc. That’s what keeps old games like Minecraft and GTA thriving, and Overwatch is another one of those games that’s big with the pre to early teens. Besides, Blizzard games have historically long lives.

As for always online: Splatoon. Sure it has a campaign, but that’s not why the majority bought the game. I literally bought a Switch because I was told I could play Splatoon on a handheld. I’d have probably just gotten BotW on Wii U otherwise.

  5. Eh, I’m okay with Saltwatch staying on PC where I prefer to play it anyway.

Besides, the community for the game reeeaaaally needs some cleaning up, and the game is so teamwork-oriented that without voice chat it’s near impossible to coordinate well. The stock voice commands (“My Ultimate is ready!” “Group up with me!” “I need healing!” etc.) only give so much information.

      1. No it does- I’m saying that on Switch it won’t be worth it because it’ll likely be through that stupid smartphone app.

OW (especially in Comp) wouldn’t go as smoothly without VC if you’re trying to set up a specific strategy (like an Ana player telling the friendly Genji to swift strike into the air making him an easy Nanoboost target as he unleashes his Ult dropping in on a group of enemy players- good luck doing that without precise coordination).
