Playing As The Ice Climbers In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Requires A Different Fighting Strategy

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sees the return of the Ice Climbers for the first time since Super Smash Bros. Brawl in 2008. In their return to the series, the Smash dev team have significantly upgraded their moveset. According to the Nintendo Treehouse team during the E3 stream, playing as the Ice Climbers will require ‘a different strategy’ this time around.

For those unfamiliar with the Ice Cimbers battle technique, you’ll still control Popo, the blue Ice Climber, while Nana will remain as your helper partner and multiply your attack rate, including your Smash attacks. However, if Nana is KO’d during a fight, you’ll still be able to fight with Popo, you’ll just do less damage. Attacks demonstrated during the stream included a chilly ice punch, spiky ice projectiles, and a nifty spin damage attack that allows you to hit enemies while travelling across the stage. Unfortunately when you lose Nana, you’ll also lose the ability to use your climbing grapple hook, saving yourself from a nasty fall.

The stream also showcased a fun 1-v-1 match with each player using the Ice Climbers. Interestingly, they used the main rule that should Nana be knocked out, you’ll have to KO Popo too. That’s a bit too dark for our liking. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrives on the Switch this December.

  1. Smash has sooo many options and that’s cuz we don’t yet have the full scoop. Thou I must say after seeing the new Shulk design in the Xenoblade 2 DLC , I kinda bad wished the Smash version looked like that. Can’t wait to get my hands on Smash regardless!

  2. How is this any different than what they used to be? Or do you mean “a different fighting strategy” compared to other fighters?

    1. It’s what they said on the stream, so just quoting it! Seems like they play a bit differently from the gameplay but 2008 was a long time ago. XD

      1. They said the strategy changed in the stream because you can’t chain grab anymore. In competitive Melee/Brawl, Iceclimbers were notorious for chaingrabs, they are almost a different chararcter in competitive play now without chaingrabs

    2. Exactly what I was thinking..
What she described was nothing different from the prior version. All of the attacks and recovery options are word for word the same way they were in Melee.

      1. Sorry guys! I’m just picking up what was said in the Nintendo Treehouse stream. :( I’ve edited the article to better reflect that this is coming directly from the stream.

  3. I wonder if they have single player ? Did they mention that already. I would like to have at least smash run, anything other than that board game crap on wiiu

    1. I honestly liked the board game but yeah. It’s a shame the console version got that over Smash Run which could have had a lot more done to it if it was on the Wii U version.

  4. Maybe they could fix it to where we can choose Nana as the dominant one over Popo. It’d be nice to switch between the two. Get it? Switch between them? …. Okay, I’ll see myself out now. ….
