Nintendo Says Loot Boxes Can Be Interesting

Loot boxes haven’t really been explored by Nintendo and most people are pleased about this. Speaking to Bloomberg, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that the overall effect of loot boxes can be interesting, but he conceded that many developers had made mistakes with their implementation.

Bloomberg: Is Nintendo moving toward more digital revenue?

Reggie: “Loot boxes, broadly speaking, have gotten a bit of a bad rap. The game mechanic of buying something that you’re not sure what’s inside is as old as baseball cards. What we believe at Nintendo is that a gameplay mechanic that offers the consumer something to buy that they’re not sure what’s inside can be interesting as long as that’s not the only way you can get those items. And that’s where some developers have made some mistakes. For us, its one of many mechanics we can use to drive on-going engagement in the game.”

  1. Wow. That’s the first time I read something coming out of his mouth that doesn’t sound like 1st semester marketing speech but actually an opinion. And I actually get his point but still Nintendo should let this issue go for a while. As he says, it hot bad rep and they could just hurt themselves at the moment, even if it was just a mechanic.

  2. if you make it feel rewarding rather than gambling, it can be.
For example, while not exactly loot boxes, FE heroes orb summoning is feels like a good system, even if you play it for free.
