Loot boxes haven’t really been explored by Nintendo and most people are pleased about this. Speaking to Bloomberg, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that the overall effect of loot boxes can be interesting, but he conceded that many developers had made mistakes with their implementation.
Bloomberg: Is Nintendo moving toward more digital revenue?
Reggie: “Loot boxes, broadly speaking, have gotten a bit of a bad rap. The game mechanic of buying something that you’re not sure what’s inside is as old as baseball cards. What we believe at Nintendo is that a gameplay mechanic that offers the consumer something to buy that they’re not sure what’s inside can be interesting as long as that’s not the only way you can get those items. And that’s where some developers have made some mistakes. For us, its one of many mechanics we can use to drive on-going engagement in the game.”
That was a confusing PR Statement. But interesting none the least.
I actually thought the exact opposite. Very clear to me.
Wow. That’s the first time I read something coming out of his mouth that doesn’t sound like 1st semester marketing speech but actually an opinion. And I actually get his point but still Nintendo should let this issue go for a while. As he says, it hot bad rep and they could just hurt themselves at the moment, even if it was just a mechanic.
No one cares about loot boxes if they don’t interfere with mechanics. Like if it’s just cosmetics I have no issue with loot boxes
I just hope Nintendo will not make the same mistake as EA did with Star Wars
They can’t say no lootboxes when they have them in their mobile games, so I see that as a main reason he said that.
Yeah but I just don’t want them to be like that Star Wars BF2 game
Nobody wants that and I pray they don’t want that too.
I don’t think anyone will make that bad of a decision again.
EA is capable of a lot of things when there is possibility of big profit, so who knows…
👍
I like how rocket league uses loot boxes, as you said, purely cosmetic unlocks.
if you make it feel rewarding rather than gambling, it can be.
For example, while not exactly loot boxes, FE heroes orb summoning is feels like a good system, even if you play it for free.

We’ve come to an age where people think lootboxes are okey with it as long as there’s a lot of “if”s attached…
Stay far, far away from that shit.
No Nintendo! Run! Run far away from that idea.
