Nintendo Is Open To Live Conferences For Future E3 Events

GamesBeat recently interviewed Charlie Scibetta, senior director of corporate communications at Nintendo of America, to talk about the company’s approach to E3. Scibetta said that the Nintendo Direct presentation format has been widely successful but they are open to other forms of displaying their content, which presumably means live conferences, if need be.

GamesBeat: Is there a reason you’re continuing the Directs online as opposed to in person?

Scibetta: We decide each year what to show in the booth based on the content we have. We also do the same when it comes to what we want to do in Nintendo Direct or a presentation. In the past, we’ve done presentations where we brought thousands of people together and demoed live on stage. With the last four or five years, we’ve done more of the video approach. It’s really whatever we think is the best way to bring those games to life.

We think that Nintendo Direct recently has been a nice way to do it because we’re able to package interviews and gameplay and fine-tune it, so it’s a nice tight presentation. It’s an efficient use of time. It’s a good way to bring these games to life in a video format. In the future, we might go back to a presentation. We might stick with video. We might do something completely different. But it’ll all be based on what we have to show that year.

  1. I’m fine with video presentations so long as they’re creative… remember Muppet Reggie, Miyamoto and rest his soul Iwata? If you’re gonna give me a boring regular Direct like gonna year, then a Conference is much better for the live crowd reactions.

  2. So long as they are worth watching, I support the idea.
And I mean as long as they don’t bore to death.

  3. While on the one hand a well crafted Nintendo Direct video presentation is enjoyable due to Nintendo’s eminent time-effectiveness, and on the other hand a Live-Show is harder to make good thoughout: the extreme and awkward ineptness by the… “competition” (while by no means unexpected) makes me confident that, if Nintendo so chooses, they could make a Live Presentation which over shadows the competition with ease.

  4. Honestly, I like the Direct style because its constantly straight to the point, but if they do another Live Conference, I hope they bring something big like say a new Switch model or possibly something that boosts the current Switch.

  5. Not with the current content….
imagine this years E3 direct as a press conference…. we would all be calling for everyone’s head at Nintendo.

Until Nintendo is ready to make hardware that matches the competition, they have no business showing us anything in a press conference. look at the visual quality of games we saw on the big screens in all the other conferences, no Nintendo hardware can give us that.

  6. Keep doing directs… Having a big E3 would be good but you must show the games us gamers want with new hardware and make it great… And not too long lol

  7. I prefer Directs. They’re far less boring, and get straight to the point. Most of the conferences this year dragged on for far too long. That’s not a problem Directs ever have for me, since it’s quick with the information. But if Nintendo can translate that into a Live presentation, then maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. I don’t see the point though. I personally think all of the other devs/companies should just do a Direct style video for E3. Maybe they’d have less flubs and awkward/boring moments.

  8. I prefer the Digital Events, but Miyamoto belongs on a stage. Ubisoft seems to have provided Miyamoto the platform to appear at a Live Conference, while Nintendo gets to do their Digital Event. So it’s Win/Win

  9. I remember when Nintendo first chose this direct approach and people thought they were shying away from E3…
Many years later, it’s looked like a more viable option… So much so that Sony is already considering this approach as well.
But whether live or direct, content is king. Nintendo has to really lock down content to make the most of their presentations.
If they had just showed Metroid Prime 4 or talked about the Switch Online service, they would have won E3 this year.. But as of now, I think Sony did well. Ghost of Tsushima is Bae

  10. It’s all about what is announced. The video was fine, there just weren’t enough games that interest me.
