NPD: May’s Best-Selling Hardware Was PS4 And Software Was State Of Decay 2

Each month we publish the NPD charts for the United States and the month of May was impressive for all hardware manufacturers. Sony’s PlayStation 4 was once again the best-selling hardware and interestingly it was State of Decay 2 as the best-selling video despite it being on Xbox Game Pass. Here’s how the Nintendo Switch did:

“Nintendo Switch software sales in May generated growth of 90 percent when compared to a year ago, delivering the highest software revenues for any Nintendo platform in May since the Nintendo Wii in May 2011. Please note that The NPD Group does not currently track digital sales on Nintendo platforms.”

“PS4 is the months best seller: Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the best-selling console hardware platform in May, and remains the best-selling console hardware platform year to date.”

“The Nintendo Switch 32GB w/Neon Red/Blue JoyCon was the month’s best-selling hardware SKU in both unit and dollar sales.”

  1. Congratulations to Playstation ones again! Well deserved with such a amazing game library , like every generation before it. Not to mention great online, blu ray player and many other usefull features such a Netflix.

      1. Cross-Play is actually a big deal now a days and the fact Sony is out right refusing it really does show their ignorances to change. Just means all the goodwill will vanish when the PS5 is released as people would be burned by Sony basically holding people’s Epic Accounts hostage.

    1. That all sounds great, sadly missing the feature that every other platform has of being able to play games like rocket league and Fortnite online with each other.

      1. Incase you mean cross play i’m not really bothered by it Sony already has 90 million+ player base so the biggest online community wich FIFA and CoD have already been showing since 2009 ish

      2. I don’t think the fact that the player base is big enough makes the lack of cross play fine. I think the reason people aren’t happy about it is because they want to play with their friends specifically who might have other systems.

    2. Yeah congratulation for kidnapping or Fornites account. Congratulation for being anti-consumer, congratulation for being the most negatively comments since last week. Congratulation to give EA, Epic games and other third parties a big fuck you to their accounts. But hey you still have 80+ million so WHAT COULD POSSIBLE HAPPEN ON PS5 FOR BEIGN SUCH A D*CK with their companies accounts?

      1. There are other things in life to do than be so obsessed about video games. Seriously looking at hateful childish posts like this you’d have to agree with the recent votes on the fact that Gaming Addiction disorder is real. Go outside, do some exercises, get some air and make some real life friends. You’ll feel better.

    3. Honestly, my 4K TV has Netflix built in and the PS4 Pro actually missing out on a Ultra HD Blu-Ray drive really makes the purchase of one undesirable to be honest. I feel like it’s really only a good console if you like the Exclusives, other then that, most of the features are on PC, Smartphones and Smart TVs now a days, with PlayStation Now on PC.

    4. Honestly, Sony can go fuck themselves. After the whole Fortnite fiasco and their stupid artsy-fartsy E3 press conference I’m afraid that Sony has become their arrogant 2005/2006 self again. 599 US dollars anyone?

I hope Microsoft comes out next gen and trounces them like they did at the beginning of last gen.

    5. Sony has great software going for the PS4. That’s about it. I applaud them for all the great Japanese titles they have as exclusives. They definitely had a lot of must-haves in the first half of the year.

PS Online is a joke, cheating and hacking multiplayer games runs rampant. Compared to Xbox, Playstation’s online should be in the same free boat as Nintendo. There is no system in place for banning players, instead they allow cheaters to blossom. Xbox has the best online system, period.

The Switch will dominate this fall and winter. Once Pokemon and Smash are released, the Switch supplies will be strained again.

      1. Lol stop spouting nonsense. I have both the One X and PS Pro. PS Plus and Xbox Gold is functionally identical. Just 2018 alone Gold service have gone down more than the Plus, and your outright rampant lie about hacking and cheating is just sad as hell. Time to get a life buddy. Go outside, breathe some air and make some friends, you treat video games way too seriously.

  2. I feel like people only bought the PS4 mainly because it was the most powerful system on the market, but now it’s mainly for the Exclusives. Me personally, I’ve actually sold over 3 of my PlayStation 4 consoles so far and I’ll just be sticking to my classic Darth Vader PS4 I got when Battlefront was released, not so sure about buying another PS4 Pro because I found it to be pretty useless as a lot of the features I can get on my Phone, PC and TV.

Honestly, PS4 is a pretty overrated system but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s got some decent exclusives but I’m really only interested in Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part 2, everything else just looks dull to me. Nintendo Switch on the other hand, I’m playing it constantly since I first got it on Launch and it’s exclusive interest me way more, as for Xbox One… I got a PC for all those exclusives so I’m good on that front.

    1. 90 million also bought it for its games obviously , I got a very good PC but only for pc exclusives and Blizzard games , ill play multiplatform games on a console any day of the week. (besides blizzard games)

I also doubt people buy it because of power cause they simply put out more succesfull systems since the PS1. Only people who grew up with PC buy a xbox in my surroundings everybody else used to play Nintendo in the 90’s until Sony took over.

And ofcourse you can use Netflix on anything these days but I prefer the interface of my ps4 Netflix right now. In the end the most important thing is the game library and I always end up with 30-50 triple A titles vs 5-10 titles on a Nintendo console witch some mediocre games aswell just for the sake of buying something for the system.

      1. What are you rambling about?

Well, if you’re happy with your PS4/PC combo, I’ll give you a gold star. Glad you’re happy.

In the meantime, I’ll enjoy the Switch games you’ll never play.

      2. Lol wow, how can some one who owns the console that puts every mediocre RPG and Visual Novels, bottom of the barrel indies, and subpar first party games (up until 2016, because Sony released trash from 2013 to 2016, and even Uncharted 4 wasn’t that good) actually have the audacity to say anything about the switch when it’s already released 2 masterpieces in less than a year 😂😂😂 Just wow.

      3. @ Progx who says i’m not playing them?

@ Demigod Who gives a fuck about first party atleast they have a huge library of third party that a Nintendo console will never get. GTA 5 sold more than your 2 master pieces ever will and thats coming from someone who always says that Zelda is his lifetime favorite franchise

        @ Nintendo first order

I own every nintendo console/handheld ever created besides the WII U and the Switch with hundreds of games so probally spend more hours on Nintendo consoles than you ever will.

        @ all three of you

Get your heads out of your ass , the sale numbers of triple A titles don’t lie , neather do the 120+ million console sales of Sony/Microsoft combined , neather do the ratings of the games on those consoles , or the amount of games sold.

Again I played more Nintendo than you idiots will ever will but atleast I can be critical. You guys call yourself gamers but you have no respect for some of the biggest titles every released in gaming history.

      1. @nintendroidblog, I recognize boot-licking when I see it.

I’ve been playing Nintendo long before you were born. Super Mario Bros was my first game in the eighties and I loved it. It’s still better than most modern games. Arguing with someone who has multiple spelling errors is futile. Plus, I own all three of the systems, yes PS4 has great exclusives but your comments are not based in fact in regards to 3rd party support. You’re basing it on frequency against systems that have been out since 2013, the Switch has been around for a year and a half. PS4 and Xbox One had slow starts in their first two years. You’re someone who doesn’t understand software and hardware development.

      2. @ Progx

I too played Super Mario Bros and Zelda in the 80’s.

I don’t care about my spelling , people know what i’m talking about. It’s self taught from playing video games and watching movies and such.

Sure, the PS4 and Xbox have been on the market longer than the Switch. But i’m already seeing the same signs as always with allot of major titles saying no thank your or no it can’t be done.

In the end I could combine the WII+WII U+ Switch library and look at the Metric score and its still probally worse than the PS4 library for example. I already did that for the WII U and Switch infact. Don’t get me wrong I love Nintendo to dead but ever since the PS1 got released Nintendo is very lacking in there multiplatform library. In my opinion the only difference between consoles should be there first party and a rare exclusive here and there like Bloodborne for example.

For me it feels like playing Nintendo for 15 years as a core gamer long before 90% of the world ever touched a video game , and Nintendo saying fuck you, thanks for making us big but we don’t need you anymore, where gonna focus on a different market now.

They are forcing people to buy competition consoles, just to keep up with all the amazing games out there. Wich is very wrong if you ask me. It’s even at a point now that i’m buying a nintendo console just to play Zelda and hopefully another good Metroid soon. Another issue is the pricing of there games. These week i’m buying the last two Tomb Raider games for 20 bucks , I spend 15 for FF15 , 6 for Dragon Age , 14 for both Metal gears , 25 for witcher and GTA 5 wich is pretty much top price. Nintendo consoles usually cost me 40-60 bucks a game. Wich is still cheap compared to the 90’s but I refuse to pay that much for most games these days besides Zelda, or online games like Fifa,Cod.

  3. Labo is in a State of Decay. As are 3rd party sales on Switch. This is why they don’t and won’t make games for Switch.

    1. You have no proof. I’m not an advocate for Labo, but it did well for a product that had a singular ad. Also, 3rd party developers are very pleased with the Switch (Bethesda, UbiSoft, Square, etc). If you’re not happy with your Switch, sell it and go for a system (or a life).
