Reggie: “Sakurai Will Be Aware Of The Groundswell Of Support That Appeared For Waluigi”, “His Decision To Make”

Reggie’s remarks on the Nintendo Switch eShop were not the only highlight of his E3 2018 interview with Waypoint. The interview also discussed the fan support for a playable Waluigi in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. There was a lot of joking around, but Reggie did eventually say that Sakurai “will be aware of the groundswell of support that appeared for a Waluigi. And in the end it’s his decision to make”. Here’s what was said:

So, you’re sitting in front of Mario Tennis Aces poster. I need to know your main is?

[Forcefully, while holding back a laugh] WALUIGI.

OK, well listen… Why does Nintendo hate Waluigi then?

I… Oh- CLEARLY-.

[laughing] The Washington Post says-

CLEARLY-

You saw the headlines!

CLEARLY, Nintendo does not hate Waluigi. Because here I am with him as my main character. I mean look, we’re making every character that’s ever been in a Smash Bros. game available in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

[Laughing] But not Waluigi .

[With faux exhaustion] You would think that would be enough to satisfy the fans. But noooooo! The fans have to focus in on one character that isn’t part of the series and to demand their inclusion.

So, one of the good things about the way we approach E3 is when it’s all said and done we step back. We look at all of the feedback and share with the devs and certainly Mr. Sakurai will be aware of the groundswell of support that appeared for a Waluigi. And in the end it’s his decision to make. Just like when we were getting ready to launch the Wii U and 3DS version there was this groundswell asking for Reggie to be a playable character in the game. I mean…

    1. Yup, that’s what we need, MORE DAMN MARIO CHARACTERS!! This is “Smash Bros” not “Mario Bros.”
WHO WILL BE DEMANDED NEXT!? …
      “Boo”?!
      “Metal Mario”??
      “Baby PinkGold Paper Peach” !?
      The freakn “Question Block” !?!
      My god people, be original.
      Ugh…

      1. The only two Mario characters I want are Waluigi and Paper Mario, both of which have amazing potential. After that, I’m all good.

What can I say? Mario’s an excellent franchise.

    1. “Minor”. Appeared in more than 50 games, which means he is well known by many games, and I believe is more than a good chunk of characters in the Smash roster.

      1. Being featured in a game is no where as important as actually being the face of a franchise. Also just cause a character COULD make an interesting fighter isn’t enough of a reason… LOTS of characters could be “interesting” fighters. Goku could be an interesting fighter too, I’m sure. However not gonna happen. Potential movesets alone aren’t enough. The other Mario characters are fine and already the best rep for the sports PLUS Mario main games.

Ppl wanting Waluigi in are 100% riding the ridiculous meme train

    2. People are not stupid to want Waluigi. He’d actually make an interesting fighter and he’s an interesting fixture to an ever increasing Mario roster that is just Metal or Animal or Baby variations of existing characters. Dude’s got STYLE.

    3. Same could also be said for Daisy. But here she is now. Remember so many Waluigi fans attacked him with 9/11 memes of Waluigi that he had to block all of them because they wouldn’t leave him alone about it. I think nowadays compared to a few years ago when Smash Wii U and 3DS was a thing that he has heard the Waluigi fans loud and clear.

Even if some of them had to be bad eggs to the man.

Maybe the next game he will make Waluigi a playable character.

  1. Who cares about Waluigi in Smash,we already have all the important Mario characters,I mean I’d be happy if he was playable, but why make it such a big deal?

    1. Was Daisy so important that it was required she make the roster? She hasn’t had relevance since Super Mario Land 30 years ago! She was just a damsel in distress for one game and has had no further real character development. Meanwhile Waluigi has some rivalry with the Mario Bros., his relation to Wario is unclear, and he has been shown to possess many unexplained abilities such as being able to swim in midair. So a character who is just a tomboyish Peach gets in while the mystery man doesn’t. It looks and feels wrong.

      1. It’s not that Daisy is important or not,she was just a lot easier to make since she’s just a Peach clone and Daisy appear in almost every games Waluigi’s in,she a party character just like him

      2. Daisy is an Echo Fighter though. Meaning it took a lot less work to make her a fighter. I can’t think of any character Waluigi could be an echo fighter of, and I honestly don’t think he’s deserving of a unique moveset. If Daisy WASN’T an Echo Fighter, then maybe I’d agree with all of the Waluigi nonsense.

  2. Plays parody of “Harry, You’re a Wizard” but instead the title is “Waluigi, You’re a Smasher!”

  3. I have two conflicting viewpoints on this situation. Firstly, I do believe that Waluigi is an interesting character. I believe that he could borrow moves from spinoff games to fit his character style. A spin off. However, I feel that a large majority of fans want the inclusion of Waluigi in Smash not solely for their dedication to him, but for the meme of it. I have a fear that this will turn out to be a “you want what you can’t have, but once you get it, it’s not enticing anymore” situation. I fear that once Sakurai and the Smash development team put so much heart and effort into pleasing the fans, they will just be let down once again. I understand that some people actually really do want Waluigi in the game- for real. But some people, and I see it all too often, just want him in because of the running joke that he is the “lonely” one. Once he isn’t the lonely one, then what? … Just a thought.

  4. For me, Waluigi is one of my least favorite characters in the Mario series. Never liked him. Stupid name too. When he first appeared all of those years ago in Mario Tennis on N64, I was like “wow, they must have ran out of ideas”.

    1. I thought the name was dumb too until I looked up the inspiration for his name. It’s very similar to Warui meaning bad, ruiji which means similar. So there you have a name that translates to bad and similar. This one I more recently learned, but it’s also is an anagram of Ijiwaru, which means cruel, ill tempered and malicious, waru also translates to hateful, poor and inferior. That’s 3 different terms that fit perfectly into his character and it’s so damn perfect that all they had to do was slap just a Wa to Luigi.

  5. Can y’all do the same with Krystal and K. Rool? Upgrade Krystal from assist to playable (we don’t have a staff user and she would make a nice one) and get DK a third fighter as well as another playable villain that the series needs?

      1. I forgot about Palutena (still think she only made it into Sm4sh because of Sakurai’s bias towards his baby Kirby or KI which he somewhat revived). However, I can think of only maybe five attacks she uses where she actually uses/hits with her staff; all the others use powers or she hits them with light.

      1. No! Is not enough! She’s been my most wanted character since before Brawl. She could/would be a Star Fox fighter that is NOT a clone of Fox, which I believe is desperately needed.

        1. Krystal to me is a character that must be forgotten forever. It was a bad choice to God Miyamoto letting Rare on make that horrible rip off of Zelda with the Star Fox franchise but that’s something from the past now the Star Fox franchise is rebooted and for rebooted it means every story from the past games never happened. So Krystal already gain a good spot in Smash Ultimate as an assist trophy

          1. Alright, it is true that Miyamoto-san hijacked Rare’s game, and it wasn’t really a *Star Fox* game, but it was a decent game and I liked the development Krystal received in Assault since there wasn’t much in Adventures. Also, just because Star Fox got rebooted (again) doesn’t mean Krystal has been dropped completely from the lore. She may reappear in a different way.

  6. I love how a lot of people assume we want Waluigi just because of the memes. For your information, I couldn’t care less about the memes, I love Waluigi because he’s Waluigi, he’s funny, goofy, has a great design, and is 1 of my favourite characters in Mario’s Universe. You don’t need to care about the memes to want Waluigi in Smash.

  7. But Reggie was in Smash 4… as a Mii. But joking aside, I’ve made my peace with Waluigi not being playable in Ultimate. I’m sure Sakurai had a good reason for not making him playable.

  8. As expected from the Smash Fanbase; Just have to complain and complain over the most ignorant and minor stuff. Waluigi is a minor character, he’s only somewhat famous because of his lame fanbase, we already have every character back in smash bros, just stfu and stop asking for more already. Like geez, it really pisses me off, knowing that “At the end of the day, people will still beg for more food when they already have a full buffet in front of them”.

  9. New President of Nintendo: “18 comments”
Waluigi has the slightest potential of being added to smash: “*53 comments*”

  10. “[With faux exhaustion] You would think that would be enough to satisfy the fans. But noooooo! The fans have to focus in on one character that isn’t part of the series and to demand their inclusion.” THAT was a stupid thing to say. It’s one thing when some Nintendo fans say shit like this to other fans but to have the head of a Nintendo division say this is stupid. Did Reggie not see what the fuck happened with Paul Feig & Rian Johnson when they started bashing the fans & piling everyone that didn’t like what was happening all into the same group of toxic fans (Feig’s tactic with the people upset by Ghostbusters 2016 by insinuating that all of them were just women hating losers) or insulting the fans’ intelligence (Rian Johnson’s tactic with telling people “Oh you weren’t smart enough to get what I was trying to do!” bullshit)? Now I remember one of the reasons why I didn’t like Reggie. He’s a passive-aggressive asshole or just an outright aggressive asshole at times.

Careful what you say, Reggie. You could be the next Feig & Johnson if you go too far.

    1. At the beginning of the article, before the interview itself, there’s “There was a lot of joking around …”, so please read it more carefully next time. I don’t think Reggie would bash N’s fans as you claim, it was clearly not meant 100% seriously.

One big problem with text is that you can’t see the emotions…

      1. Except Reggie has done something like this before in the past when it wasn’t an interview trying to joke around. It’s not unheard of for someone to be “joking” but actually mean every single word they’ve said, too. Some passive aggressive people actually tend to do just that to throw people off that they are actually being very serious and a huge asshole.
