NPD: 70% Of People In U.S Who Own A Nintendo Switch Also Own PS4 Or Xbox One

The NPD Data for June 2018 was published not too long ago and a recent titbit has popped up regarding console ownership in the United States. Mat Piscatella has reported on Reset Era that the data they obtained revealed that around 70 percent of those in the United States who own a Nintendo Switch also have either a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

“According to NPD’s Games Acquisition Monitor, at the end of Q1 ballpark of 70% of people in the U.S. that owned a Switch also owned a PS4 and/or an Xbox One. Cross ownership across all 3 consoles is pretty high compared to prior gens. Each system is differentiated enough that a big chunk of people that are into console gaming own multiple systems.”

“Now arguing primary vs secondary doesnt make any sense. Each box does its own thing and each does it well.”

    1. Unless you have a PC then Xbox One isn’t too good.
It’s a great system but man, the lack of exclusives really turns me off.
PS4 is okay, their exclusives are all starting to look the same and barely any of them have colour.
Switch is by far the more diverse seeing how it’s getting exclusives that are Colourful and Dark.

All three consoles are great in their own way, especially PS4 with the PS VR stuff and Xbox One X/S having 4K Blu-Ray.

      1. I myself want an XBOne X but as stated it lacks exclusives and even if it did have them they end up on PC though I will probably still get one for the novelty.

    2. Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 are the two consoles worth owning. The Xbox One is a playstation with less exclusives.

  1. And here I am with a PS4, but never actually play the darn thing. My Phone, Switch and PC are good enough. I’d sell the darn thing, but I kinda still want to play FF7…
    whenever that gets released. >_>

  2. I love my newly bought Xbox ONE S … Got the games I like on it, Ive only have it 3 weeks and I’ve got 15 games on it, way more than 17 months I’ve had my Switch :/ … I had to get one as switch has had no games for me all year and won’t till starlink and smash

    1. What games does the Xbox have? The Switch has everything and the two greatest games of this generation, Zelda Breath of the wild, and Super Mario Odyssey. Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate, YsVIII, Fortnite, Paladins, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Arc Survival, Skyrim, Doom, DK Tropical Freeze, Wolfenstein, Meat Boy, Undertale, Kirby, Mario Kart, Both Dragon Ball fighting games and their DLC, etc. I can Type more for you.

      F=Ma.

      1. Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are good, but I’d hardly call them the best games of this generation. A lot of the games that you mentioned have been on Xbox One for a while now, and cheaper than their Switch counterparts. Even their first party titles like BotW, DK Tropical Freeze, and Mario Kart can be found on the Wii U and for a lot cheaper. XB1 has GTA 5, Witcher 3, Fallout 4, Forza, Halo 5, the Master Chief Collection, Gears of War, Cuphead, No Man’s Sky, Killer Instinct, Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite, Dead Rising, Just Cause 3, Rare Replay, and a ton of backwards compatible 360 games. While the Switch has some good games, it’s still lacking a lot and has hit a bit of a dry spell recently. Hopefully Nintendo will get the ball rolling after Smash comes out.

      2. I got gears 4, halo 5, sunset overdrive, quantum break, recore, killer instinct… And later this year and next year I have gears 5 halo 6 and rage 2 and maybe more… I also have outlast 1&2 with fallout 4, along with 360 games I got for free, fallout 3, Alan wake, gears 1,2,3 and judgment and my oldschool faves Turok 1&2 remastered … Can’t get any of those on switch barring outlast 1&2 but I got em both in the trinity bundle (with the whistleblower dlc) brand new for £9 :p … All the games for the switch you listed half are on Xbox for way cheaper, and I own all Ninty exclusives and finished them but nothing new to play, and some games don’t interest me

      3. I got gears 4, halo 5, sunset overdrive, quantum break, recore, killer instinct…… None of these games are in the the great category as even Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Nothing is better than Breath of the Wild, its only competition number one is Mario Odyssey, the Persona 5, Nier and maybe god of war. Breath of the Wild still blows them all out of the water. In Ten years time god of war even horizon no awards will be stale, while Breath of the Wild shall still be Emperor.

      4. Breath of the Wild’s only competition is Mario Odyssey plus Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Nintendo’s only real competition is Sony. Xbox has no exclusives of value.

    2. I can tell you that the Xbox has that many good games because it’s quite old now. The switch is only 15 months old. At the same age, the Xbox and PS4 library was far from being as good as the switch’s now.
Sir Isaak made a pretty good list for you.

      1. Yeah true, but the games for switch very few still, BOTW, MK8, Captain toad, donkey Kong etc are all ports where are the new games???

  3. “Now arguing primary vs secondary doesnt make any sense. Each box does its own thing and each does it well.”

Your primary console is the one you primarily use. I have my XB1 as my primary console, because of it’s versatility. It has a ton of good games, as well as a myriad of media streaming apps. When I buy multi-platform games, I tend to go with XB1, and later down the line I might pick up a used copy of the Switch version like I did with Skyrim and DB Xenoverse 2. It is absolutely possible to have a primary console. I’m not sure how the source author doesn’t seem to understand that.

    1. I think that statement does not imply the amount of time a user spends with a console or another. It seems to me it refers to console quality or importance. They all have something that makes them stand on their own.

      1. I don’t think the author’s statement was regarding the consoles’ respective physical qualities. In terms of importance though, I’d say my XB1 is far more important. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy my Switch, but my XB1 gets so much use watching Netflix, Hulu, Sling, YouTube, as well as playing Blu-Rays and DVD’s on top of the tons of hours spent playing games.

  4. Hmm… I own every Nintendo system to exist, but still don’t have an xbox or ps4 lol. And I’ll survive a little longer.

  5. I have a request to ask.. . I know this might be the wrong place though..
Can Mynintendonews please find out what Michael Patcher has been up to lately? I miss his doom news and grossly flawed predictions.

  6. I only have a Switch and iPhone, MacBook. Pretty happy enough gaming for sure, maybe if DayZ comes out on Xbox end of the year I might dare for the first time in many years to bring some garbage into my house.

  7. The great thing about the Switch is it offers completely different reasons to buy it than other consoles, which means it’s a great first console, but also a great second console. That’s a contrast to the other two systems which do so much of the same (I say this as a former Xbox owner and current PS4 owner). Even if you have another system, the Switch is compelling.

  8. I’m one of those people that owns both. I couldn’t imagine my life without my PS4. There’s SO many great games on it. Many of which I still haven’t bought yet. Many more than what’s currently on the Switch. In fact, I have yet to find another Switch game that I love more than Breath Of The Wild. I doubt I ever will.

  9. Switch does physically deforming itself at 720p 30fps well. Xbox does online service and customer support well and ps4 does actually receiving games and staff layoffs well.

  10. Until this past April when I bought my PS4 (I admit, I mostly bought it for Persona 5 but have since added Crash N. Sane Trilogy, Until Dawn, The Last of Us, Street Fighter V, and Wipeout Collection (since Ninty won’t bless us with a new F-Zero)), I only had Nintendo consoles and a custom PC. So I am in that 70% and proud of it.

  15. Good! This means that the Switch is bought by gamers and not by little kids or casuals. I hope the 3rd parties take notes!
