August: Super Smash Bros Ultimate Nintendo Direct Roundup

A legendary vampire hunter and a fan-favorite villain are joining the sprawling cast of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game. In a Nintendo Direct video presentation entirely focused on the Nintendo Switch exclusive, it was revealed that Simon Belmont from the Castlevania series and King K. Rool, the main antagonist from the original Donkey Kong Country games, are both joining the game as playable fighters. In addition, the Nintendo Direct also shared additional information on Echo fighters, new stages, new modes and one of the most impressive collections of music ever in a single game, with more than 900 music tracks and 28 hours of music. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on Dec. 7.

“Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the biggest games Nintendo has ever released,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Between all the iconic fighters, stages and music, it’s the largest video game crossover ever produced – and nothing short of a Nintendo fan’s dream come true.”

To view the Nintendo Direct video in its entirety, visit https://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct. Some of the highlights revealed in the video include:

  • Simon Belmont: Simon’s signature weapon is, of course, his whip, with special attacks true to the Castlevania series, including the axe, cross, holy water and Grand Cross Final Smash. His stage is Dracula’s Castle, with candlesticks that release an item when destroyed. Alucard, the tragic hero from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, appears as an Assist Trophy, lending his cursed steel in battle. Richter Belmont, a descendant of Simon Belmont and the star of his own Castlevania games, also joins the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster as an Echo fighter.
  • King K. Rool: As the beloved villain from all three Donkey Kong Country games on Super NES, King K. Rool joins Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable fighter. He attacks with a blunderbuss that can fire cannonballs at opponents, and throws his crown, which acts like a boomerang.
  • Echo Fighters: Echo fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have move sets based on other fighters, but a different visual appearance. In addition to Richter Belmont, two other Echo fighters in the game are Chrom from the Fire Emblem series (Echo fighter for Roy) and Dark Samus from the Metroid games (Echo fighter for Samus). Echo fighters can be displayed as separate fighters on the character select screen or stacked on top of the character they are echoing. When stacked, players can change between them with the press of a button. It’s up to players to decide how they want them displayed.
  • Stages: Returning favorites with new visuals and tweaks will make up most of the stages in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but there are new stages in the mix as well. These include Dracula’s Castle from the Castlevania series and New Donk City Hall from the Super Mario Odyssey game. More than 100 stages will be in the game, but because the popular Battlefield and Omega forms can also be selected for each stage, more than 300 total stages are available right from the start! Each stage in the game will also support eight-player battles (additional accessories may be required for multiplayer modes and are sold separately) and feature the ability to turn off hazards like the Yellow Devil in Wily Castle.
  • Stage Morph: In a Super Smash Bros. first, the Stage Morph option will let players seamlessly transition between two different stages. When you select this option in the rules, one stage will transform into another during battle.
  • Music: For fans that want it all, My Music lets players select specific music tracks for each stage. Up until now, each stage had its own music track. But in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players can select tracks by series. If they are fighting on a stage from The Legend of Zelda, for example, they can select any music track included from that franchise, including new additions like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Main Theme. Counting game music tracks and other music, like in-game menus and other short musical passages, there are approximately 900 compositions – that’s more than 28 hours of video game music! When playing in Handheld mode, music can be played even while the Nintendo Switch screen is turned off, turning the system into its own portable music player.
  • Items: New items being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate include the Banana Gun, Killing Edge, Bomber, Death’s Scythe, Staff, Ramblin’ Evil Mushroom and Rage Blaster, among others from a wide variety of different video game franchises. Items in the game can be picked up and used offensively and defensively in battle.
  • Pokémon: After players throw a Poké Ball in the game, many new and returning Pokémon may appear to assist in battle. Some of these Pokémon include Abra, Solgaleo, Lunala, Mimikyu and the enormous Alolan Exeggutor.
  • Assist Trophies: Some of the new Assist Trophies that are joining Super Smash Bros. Ultimate include Zero from the Mega Man X series, Knuckles from Sonic The Hedgehog, Krystal from Star Fox Adventures, Rathalos from the Monster Hunter series, Shovel Knight from, well, Shovel Knight and the evil Moon from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.
  • Classic Mode: The single-player mode in which players battle against a series of fighters will return in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Each fighter has a set of stages and opponents that she or he will face.
  • Stamina Battle: In addition to Time Battle and Stock Battle, Stamina Battle is also one of the standard modes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In Stamina Battle, players fight to deplete each other’s stamina until only one fighter is left standing.
  • Final Smash Meter: In addition to regular Final Smashes that can be activated after breaking a Smash Ball, the Final Smash Meter is now a selectable option. If enabled, players can charge their Final Smash Meter over the course of a battle. Once the Final Smash Meter is fully charged, players can unleash a less powerful Final Smash attack.
  • Squad Strike: When playing Squad Strike, players will participate in 5-on-5 or 3-on-3 skirmishes, with each player using either five or three consecutive fighters in one battle.
  • Tourney Mode: Up to 32 players can participate in Tourney mode, making it great for parties or events with a lot of people. And since Nintendo Switch can be played anywhere, these tournaments can even take place in unexpected places!
  • Smashdown: After battling in this mode, the previously selected fighters will no longer be available, forcing players to have to pick a different fighter for the next round. This mode favors players who are skilled with multiple fighters and encourages others to diversify their rosters.
  • Training: The improved Training mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate includes an exclusive stage that features a grid, used to help measure the distance and trajectory of special moves and fighter knockback.

  1. I’m liking all the new modes especially squad battles, stage morphs, and smashdown. It’s a shame they couldn’t have added more than 5 in squad battle though.
Probably no story mode but I bet a revamped Smash Run is the missing piece.

    1. Oh yeah! 100% agree with all of this! Those 3 features alone (Squad Strike, Stage Morph, and Smash Down) have me super excited! And I’d adore a revamped Smash Run!

      1. Quite possible.

At the very least, some mode in the game is going to have boss battles since they dropped that bit of trivia with Rathalos. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing Smash Runs where sometimes the doors lead to a boss room.

      2. There it is.

There’s different bosses. Each character has one they are assigned to in classic. They replace Master Hand.

Master Hand finally becomes a playable character.

        1. I’d love this. And Tabuu.

I had a crazy idea the other day where Sandbag could be playable, with Master Hand and Crazy Hand being Sandbag’s hands. 😂

  2. I’m shocked and kind of disappointed that it was only 25 minutes. I was hoping he’d go into detail about that censored mode on the main menu screen, but hey it’s better than nothing.

    1. Fingers crossed it is a story mode that will put Subspace Emissary to shame. (With over 60 characters now instead of 37, a story mode is gonna be freaking insane if one is included & gives all of them the spotlight at least once.)

    2. It’s four months until the game comes out so they weren’t going to show absolutely everything in this one. There will be another Smash direct closer to launch and all will be revealed.

  3. This direct was special and I think there are some secret messages about some of our loves franchise like Metroid, Star Fox ecc.

I don’t know why but when God Sakurai talked about the music in the game they started to show a Metroid music then they change to a Star Fox music and keeped that.

Could this mean we will something about those two franchise.

Also when they showed King K Rool they started with a joke from King Dedede… I can still hope to see Bandana Dee in Smash?

GLAB THEY PUTTED THE ORIGINAL DESIGN OF SIMON BELMONT

    1. Yeah this direct was well thought out and Sakurai-sama was pretty much teasing little things while keeping a stone face. The end where King Dedede trolled was fair game and let us know that there might be some truth to some of the things that were teased or, he was just trolling (like the Waluigi colored chairs). Sakurai is totally content with having us talk and speculate to keep the hype alive even if he is just trolling 🙂. I for one love it 😋

      1. It should, let’s face it smash 4 was abit meh. It had no story and was just fighting, I know that’s the game but it needs a story! … Ultimate? Omg can you just imagine the crazy ott story with all the characters??? It would be beyond! :O

  4. Pingback: Five Newly Revealed Super Smash Bros Ultimate Characters Getting Amiibos | My Nintendo News

    1. Seeing as we got K. Cool (finally), I can live with Assist Shovel Knight.

Just need the Amiibo pre-order to be available now…

  5. please nintendo no more smash directs don’t spoil the whole game like you did with odyssey. Im still old school and want to be surprised by the game

    1. I don’t mind as long as the starting roster is small. I don’t mind knowing what my unlocks ARE but I like being surprised on which fighter comes up.

And hopefully they are also not super arbitrary and seemingly random like the last games.

      1. Sakurai off-handedly mentioned during E3’s presentation that “your starting roster may be as small as the original game for the Nintendo 64” (I probably misquoted that, sorry), so it’s safe to assume that you have to unlock all the other 60+ fighters.

  6. So in a nutshell, instead of having one priority music track per stage (preferred option!), it’s now one priority track per SERIES.

So if I want to hear the LOZ main theme in a stage, I would have to hear it across EVERY LOZ stage, or else the default option of every track in each series playing at random.

Why did you fix what was never broken!?

I’m sorry, but I’m far too irked by this to stay content. I know you Smash/Nintendo fanboys hate complaining and negative criticism, but this just baffles and inconveniences me, and I’m not just going to pretend that everything is sunny and okay. I don’t work that way.

Aside from that, it’s nice to know that Ritcher isn’t just a second 3rd-party rep from a same series, since Echo Fighters in the CSS can condensed (or expanded for convenience), confirming that they aren’t standalone characters. However, this also confirms that Dark Pit and Lucina (who were present in the last game) have been officially demoted.

So why not make Alph (also Louie and Brittany) Echo Fighters as well (not to mention Young Link (a child Link) and Dr. Mario (Mario in a doctor suit))?

    1. I think with the My Music change is just now each stage has ALL the series’ music on them instead of just the one’s placed on them.
So you can still have different play frequencies set for each stage…. like maybe you want Ballad of the Goddess on Skyloft but on the Bridge of Eldin, you can have it be Gerudo Valley or favor Midna’s Lament on the Pirate Ship stage

      1. I certainly hope so, because the video sounded like it suggested otherwise.

Then again, some people thought there would be no more newcomers after Ridley.

      2. Just make sure you’re not seeing “Sounds” screens vs “My Music” screens. I’m sure Sounds will be only divided by series but My Music will be for the stages.

    2. No you’ve got it completely wrong as mentioned by CFG but your over the top reaction to something so arbitrary is quite ridiculous 😂

      1. My Music was one of the highlights for me in SSBB.

I do not want to settle between one specific track per series or random tracks per series.

Obviously, you have no idea how My Music works, or just don’t give a damn.

  7. I definitely wouldn’t say the transition in Stage Morph is seamless… You can see some minor stuttering in the first part that it’s shown, and they speed up the video after that to make it look better. A great idea, and great implementation for the switch, just don’t expect it to be absolutely perfect based on the trailer

  8. Simon Belmont: Didn’t expect Simon to look so cool: sweet. (Poor Luigi died. lol)

King K. Rool: Super Smash Bros Ultimate: Revenge of the Motherfucking Bosses Up In Here!

Echo Fighters: Welcome Chrom, Dark Samus, & Richter Belmont. Like how you can stack them but I’ll probably leave them unstacked. An option to set the roster to N64 Originals, Melee Newcomers, Brawl Newcomers, Smash 4 Newcomers, & Ultimate Newcomers with Echo Fighters getting a small section at the bottom of each game they first appeared in would be so awesome (basically, it’d be something similar to how characters were split up in Warriors Orochi 3.) But I doubt it’ll happen. *fingers crossed*

Stages: Screw that other shit concerning stages! Poke Floats! POKE MOTHERFUCKING FLAOTS!!! D:< "We all float down here!"

Stage Morph: Cool. This feature will probably be a nightmare for handheld mode, though.

Music: At first, I thought you'd be able to play any music track on any stage regardless of franchise. That's a lot of tracks to choose from before fighting on a stage! But it's relegated to just the franchise the stage is from. *sighs with relief but a twinge of disappointment* A portable music player? Is there gonna be some awesome carrying case designed for turning the Switch into a portable music player that I can listen to as I walk around with my hands free? No? Not a very good portable music player then. *shrug*

Pokemon: Did they show if Eevee got an awesome upgrade to attacking if it's released from a Pokeball!?

Assist Trophies: *sobs in a corner over Krystal not being playable with a unique moveset* I know I got Ridley finally but… but… But Krystal..! D: *mimics a Waluigi cry for comedic effect*

Stamina Battle: As in we can switch between Time, Stock, & now Stamina!? Yay!?

Final Smash Meter: Like Lil Mac's KO Meter!

Squad Strike: Kicking team battles up a notch, are we?

Tourney Mode: Glad this is gonna be a feature from the start again. It was a shame Smash 4 had it as a feature added later.

Smashdown: I'm so gonna use this on a regular basis since I can be indecisive sometimes when picking a character. Like Ridley, I NEEDED this in Smash! @.@

    Training: Improvements! :D
