Nintendo’s upcoming Nintendo Switch Online service is an affordable, multi-featured paid service that lets users enjoy online play for compatible Nintendo Switch games, access a growing library of classic NES games with added online functionality, back up save data for most games, and use additional features for the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app that will enhance the online experience for compatible games.
When Nintendo Switch Online launches in the second half of September, members will have access to:
- Online play in games like Splatoon 2, ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Tennis Aces.
- Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online, a selection of classic NES games, like Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda and Dr. Mario with newly added online play.
- Save Data Cloud backup, which lets you save your game data online for easy access in compatible games. This makes it easy to retrieve your game data if you lose your system or start using a new one.
- Plus, enhance your online experience with features available through the Nintendo Switch smartphone app and receive special offers.
Nintendo Switch owners will not be automatically charged when the service launches in the second half of September.

Will we still be able to keep the NES games even if our membership expires?
Also, when they say “great offers,” I hope they don’t mean the My Nintendo offers they give.
I don’t think you’ll get to keep games. They’ll just be available all the time u pay your membership.
It’ll be nice to play some of these nes games on the switch, but I expect most people will already own them on a 3ds.
What we really need is Gc and n64 games. Pleeaasssee!!

Yeah it was already confirmed that pretty much the only way to have virtual console was through the online service makes sense as we get a whole lotta NES titles
I’m fairly certain it’s more like Netflix and less like Virtual Console.
The way they described it before, it actually sounds like Games with Gold for Xbox. With Gold, you get 2 or 3 free games every month of Microsoft’s choosing, just like Nintendo with the NES games. The difference is that Nintendo only gives you access to that game the month that it is released. Every month they’ll be switching out NES games for people to play, according to previous reports.
At just around 20 bucks a year, I’ll be very surprised if we get to keep the games for as long as we have the subscription and expect them to be available for just that month. If it was just old games with no added features, I’d be more inclined to expect to be able to keep the free games as long as I have the subscription. But maybe Nintendo will surprise us again as they do sometimes succeed in surprising us from time to time. In any case, we’ll find out how it works soon enough.
And in the case of PlayStation Plus, the free games we get each month is random. Sometimes it’s 1 or 2 games & sometimes it’s 3 or more. But Gold comes with a hell of a lot more than free games if I’m remembering what I’ve heard from others correctly.
@Infinite Ridley Gold comes with 2 Xbox One games and 1 Xbox 360 game for the first half of the month and then another for the second half. The cool thing though, is that the 360 games are made backwards compatible with XB1 if they weren’t already, so you can play them all on Xbox One. And if your subscription lapses, you still get to keep the Xbox 360 games. I’m hoping they’ll add OG Xbox games to Gold, seeing as now they’re making those backwards compatible too.
It’ll most likely be like with games you get through PlayStaion Plus where you can play them for as long as you have PS Plus, but if you cancel your subscription, you lose access to the games.
Here’s how I see it, the online app will still be as shit with only Splatoon on it. Yes you will be able to continue to play the exsisting online games but with no added voice chat. The NES stuff won’t be worth it as most people own them 10x over and won’t care about online leaderboards. The cloud system is worth it but will only back up selected Nintendo titles so if you’ve got 1000hrs ploughed into Minecraft or MHGU then your starting over if your system develops a fault. As as for awesome special offers these will be the same as the crap we have on Nintendo rewards now.
Most players will be buying this junk just so they can continue to play the online games they like. The voice chat and other features will remain unchanged. By Christmas we will still have just 2 games with voice chat. Splatoon via the
cr-app and fortnight via the excellent native chat!
Which will suck for those that have been holding out hope that once paid online goes into effect that it will make the app as an optional way to use features as said features will be made available on the system itself, too, through a massive firmware.
I’m hoping this will be the case myself but I know how fucking stubborn (and sometimes incredibly stupid) Nintendo can be, so I’m keeping my expectations down to a realistic optimist. (Optimistic realist? *shrug*)

Personally, I think this is a big mistake.
The mistake is letting it stay free
Why not both? Have it a subscription like Netflix, with the option to keep/buy in case you want to opt out. But you can only buy if you have a current subscription.
At the very least we should be able to play old games without being connected to the internet. I’m sure we’ll be able to download NES games in order to play without being online, right?
I think they said that you could download the games. And it makes sense since it would be tough to stay connected if playing it in handheld mode away from home.

i wish nintendo would put the nes games on the eshop for sale because i prefer buy them and keep them forever rather than pay a 20$ subscription
I actually am excited for paying money for online play, because of the NES games and save data backup. Get on with it, Nintendo!

I really want to know about at LEAST SNES games
I’d give it three to six months. More if they get third party games as well.
Soon the wait will be over pretty soon.
I don’t want NES games though. At this stage I’m considering picking up a Wii U again just for SNES Virtual Console and Wii backwards compatibility.
Already have most every NES game they could post in original cartridge, and I don’t use my Switch in portable mode very often, so I’ll just wait for Smash to bother with online.
I wonder how close the launch date is, I wish Nintendo would had said a number so it looks like I have to guess that flipping date (I know its not the 1st to 15th sept) as I want to get this flipping out of way with other games coming thick and fast.
