Video: Owlboy Creator Creates Mock-up For A Chrono Trigger Sequel And It Looks Great

Chrono Trigger is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs to come out of Japan and sadly it has never received a direct sequel. Simon S. Andersen, who is the creator behind the lovely Owlboy has recreated what a sequel to the game could look like and as you might expect it certainly looks great with Mr. Andersen’s unique take on it. Have a watch down below.

“I’ve been making mockups for hypothetical game sequels for fun for many years. Generally all of them are still images where try to capture what made people connect to the original games and see where else I could take the concept, while still being recognizable. After finishing a massive game project spanning a decade of development, I was ready to tackle a new series. I had already known for years I wanted to explore a hypothetical sequel to Chrono Trigger, Cross and Radical Dreamers, but it took me a full year until I figured out how I wanted it to look. This has been my most ambitious spare time mockup so far, spanning about two months worth of work and featuring music by Jonathan Geer. If the sequel that was planned years ago was revived, this is likely how I would do it. This video is not endorsed or licensed by SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD and is not a game under development. This is made only for fun.”

  1. SquareEnix for sute hates us. They exactly know what we REALLY want, but they give a damn about it. No Chrono Remake neither Chrono sequel; heck not even making a movie or anime of it (and I’m not counting that mascots’ OVA they did, it sucked)

  2. Absolutely stunning and catchs the exact same feel of Chrono Trigger

I remember when I played Chrono Trigger for the first time on the Nintendo DS I was impressed by the starting cutscene because the characters reminded me DBZ characters and only to find later that the characters where designed by Akira Toriyama. Chrono Trigger is a special game to me. It is even better than FF, KH and Secret of Mana by my opinion.

    1. Overrated as in the game is so highly rated and is arguably one of, if not THE, best SNES games on the system? A game so great that many would argue it’s one of the few masterpieces in video game history? Yes. It is a very overrated game. It doesn’t get much better than Chrono Trigger.

      1. I finaly played it because everyone says how great it is but I found it very boring. I prefer games with good gameplay.

        1. It does have good gameplay. It’s roughly the same as most other turn based RPGs but with something that makes it akin to an action RPG. It was practically the pre-cursor to action RPGs. Besides, the story, characters, & music is where the game truly shines.

    2. FF6 is overrated. Chrono Trigger, though, is still good today even without the aid of nostalgia goggles…. in my humble opinion.

      1. FF6 still stands the test of time. The best Final Fantasy game. And that’s not nostalgia goggles. CT and FF6 were two of the best RPGs on what many can arguably claim is the best JRPG console we ever had.

      2. I’m just speaking from experience. I played both for the first time in 2012 and Chrono Trigger was genuinely enjoyable but FF6 really just… showed age. But maybe that’s just me.
At any rate, I went into Chrono Trigger blind and enjoyed it greatly so it must have done something right.

  3. Chrono Trigger… The SNES game that many feel is better than the Donkey Kong Country games, The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Super Mario World, and even Super Metroid which were also on the SNES. A game I, too, feel is better than all of those games.

    7. Donkey Kong Country
    6. Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble
    5. The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
    4. Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest
    3. Super Mario World
    2. Super Metroid
    1. Chrono Trigger

    1. Yep. Has never gotten a direct sequel. Chrono Cross didn’t focus enough on the original game so I don’t consider it a true direct sequel.

Anyway, I want to assume the two characters we see our Magus & Lucca’s children if not Magus & Lucca themselves.

    2. Okay. I admit; Super Metroid & Chrono Trigger are pretty neck & neck so Chrono Trigger wins out by a few points. (One day I hope to play Soul Blader again & see if it’s still as great as I barely remember it was so I can add it to this list. I played that game once when I was little and it left a very strong, STRONG impression on me. Not to mention it was a game a friend of my older brother’s who helped me out with it who was killed some time later. So maybe that’s another reason it’s left such an impression.)

      1. That’s surprising. I guess I’ve been a little presumptuous in these comments and need to remember every gamer has their own tastes.

        1. Yoshi’s Island was a good game as I have played it. It’s just one of those games I played too late as I didn’t play it til the mid 2000s during the Gamecube era so it didn’t stick to me in that way. Plus I think I beat the game in a day so that didn’t help matters. lol

      1. My list needs some refining to add Super Mario RPG but the rest are meh as the only one I’ve actually played other than SMRPG is Yoshi’s Island but I prefer my Yoshi as a mount in Mario games (not that the Yoshi games are bad).

        1. Since your list is pretty much made up of RPG’s, I do suggest Playing FF6 and Secret of Mana. Earthbound is beloved by many, but I honestly feel like it’s a product of it’s time and unless you really LOVE RPG’s, you probably won’t enjoy it as much.

            1. Well, PSN should have them, but if I remember correctly the PS2 version of FF6, is updated, not the SNES one. I might be wrong though, as for Mana, it’s the second with the PSN version.

The way I’m playing it right now is the SNES Mini, but Wii U and Wii should have them on the VC.

  4. 1) RIP Crimson Echoes
    2) Chrono Cross isn’t a sequel and isn’t that great
    3) Get this man to also do one for Breath of Fire. This whole thing was straight fire and I think if he tackled Breath of Fire in the same style as Breath of Fire 3 but with his really slick design would look dope af

  5. I play chrono trigger first time in ds version and i love this game. Still i feel chrono trigger is best ds jrpg. Mine best ds jrpg list:
    1 chrono trigger
    2 goldensun darkdawn
    3 final fantasy 6
    4 radiant historia
    5 6 7 8 dragon quest titles
