The Nintendo Switch Online NES Emulator Has Been Hacked

It hasn’t even been a day since the Nintendo Switch Online service launched, but hackers have already managed to get into the service’s NES emulator. In fact, hackers have already figured out how to replace NES games and add in new ones. According to kapu, who discovered this information, the service’s NES emulator is nothing more than “a quick port of an existing emulator packaged with some ROMs”. The “existing emulator” that kapu is referring to is the NES Classic Edition, which was already hacked a while ago.

Kapu said to Polygon that “for someone without prior experience in running Switch mods, getting all of it set up at first is a bit of a process, but nothing too hard with proper instructions. After an initial setup it’s insanely easy to swap out ROMs and add entirely new ones”. As for why the emulator seems to be so easy to hack, kapu says that “I have serious doubts that it points to any vulnerabilities, I’d say it’s just a side-effect of making it easy on them to add more games as they officially release more, thus making it easy for modders as well”.

    1. The service hasn’t even been live for a day yet, and already someone has hacked into it. And yet, Nintendo is so concerned about hacking, they won’t let you backup and save your Splatoon or Pokémon data. Sigh…

    2. It was very much expected I’d say, especially if all they had to do was access the new files, because it’s an emulator that was already hacked. Maybe it’s wrong to even call this a hack.

  2. This is why Nintendo needs to provide a better service than emulation. Get the retro library built up fast with online play and start working on those third party agreements.

    1. This is why Nintendo is strict when it comes to hackers infiltrating information and whatnots. These hackers responsible for these actions should get a permanent ban for life.

      1. Oh boy, the fanboy arrived, instant want’s to put people in jail for showing us the consumer how anti-consumer Nintendo is.

It’s a port from the classic system, you know ? the system that got red handed caught taking ROMS from illegal ROM sites, the sites Nintendo tried to sue month ago. Kinda ironic and also very sad people like you defend this weasel company.

They have great developers for the games and that’s it, even Sony isn’t that low when it comes to ROMS.

Guy like you would loooove, love Kim yung from North Korea. He also want’s to punish freedom loving people who stick with each other.

So keep on raging here, this company is going down, when Miyamoto is gone is done bro, only more ports and milking out for years before people waking up to this crap and realize people like you are just pure bs.

      2. Right. But unfortunately Nintendo will always be two steps behind. It’s like the music industry. They were forced to adapt to survive because of it. There’s idealism and then there’s reality.

  4. well the online is pretty bad and with them refusing to have voicechat unlike they did with the switch and even 3ds they are missing out on a lot of chances hell even discord offered to help and nintendo said ” NO< we want to do this our way balgh ,blagh , blagh money blagh blagh , blagh , ristrictions blagh, blagh ,blagh.
sorry if that looks whiney but it just feels like how they are dealing with it.

    1. High IQ Entitled Gamer

Right? What a bunch of assholes, making games we like and are still playing to this day. I won’t stop emulating till they get every single game since the nes onto the Switch, and that includes third party games. I won’t be happy until they do that.

    2. Indeed, the whole Nes thing stinks. Ugly Menu icon and can’t delete certain ugly games from 3 party. The games also are laggy and colors are off. Mario bros on Wii U virtual console looked way better on tv and gamepad.

Just some cheap port from Nes classic with ROMS stolen from ROM sites.

Nintendo needs competition FAST, because they have to much freedom in fooling around unlike tech wars like Apple vs Samsung who push the limited it tech, software for getting the seller.

It’s time gamers stick with each other and let or voice heard instead of these morons here fanboying and defending some plastic from china like it’s part of their ego … because it’s all they have.

  5. Good! I like buying my games, not renting them. I don’t feel bad for them.

I’ve supported the Virtual Console on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U and not being able to own them this time around is insulting.

    1. The problem is, content makers want us to rent from them. Spent years and years trying to convince us it’s better to pay per use than outright own. Now, music is going that way at last through streaming. Which of course means when the music is taken down, you no listen anymore. A ridiculous way to do things, but the kids all love it because they’re told it’s cool.

      1. Maybe because there wasn’t much hacking involved. The Switch was already hacked, the emulator was already known, esentially all that had to be done was move new roms into a folder on the Switch.

  6. Why don’t hackers stop doing that that why play station is so high so they have better stuff to stop it Nintendo trust us to not do this crap if they rase the price blame the hacker’s not Nintendo
