Monolith Soft Art Director Says Baten Kaitos 3 Was Canceled But He Would Like To Restart Development

Monolith Soft artist Yasuyuki Honne has revealed that the third game in the acclaimed Baten Kaitos series was canceled. However, he would like the project to be restarted now that development has commenced on Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and its expansions.

“It’s been 10 years since the release of Baten Kaitos 2 (Baten Kaitos Origins) and it’s pains me to continue getting requests for a sequel. Since enough time has gone by I think it’s okay to talk about it a bit. Right after the release of Baten Kaitos 2, I was working on a sequel at Namco (now Bandai Namco) and we were onto pre-productions, however before Baten Kaitos 3 could become a reality, talk between involved parties ended due to circumstances.

Had we released the game, it would’ve been something grand, and would take you to the bottom of the seas, the earth, and the sky. Bandai Namco still has a lot of my plan work that’s been sealed away. For those of you requesting a sequel, don’t just ask Monolith Soft and myself, but Bandai Namco as well.”

    1. You really did miss out on something great. It was an excellent story, a surprising amount of the world can be interacted with by capturing the essences of food (which can rot over time) and other things in cards, and they are two of the only RPGs I have ever played which actually handle a card-based battle system well.

I moved overseas from the US about six years ago and had to sell off almost all of my belongings to do it. Sadly, my Gamecube collection, which included these two games, were among those items. I would absolutely love to see a third installment of the franchise and a remaster of the first two on the Switch.

      1. A remaster of the first two on Switch would be fantastic, this series is amazong and the battle system was superb, a third game would have been wonderful and hopefully Namco will consider it.

  1. Oh hell yes 😊 I would luv to play bk3 I still have the 2 for GCN haven’t touched them in over a decade but I would like a part 3
