Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa Says That “We Will Keep The [3DS] Business Going”

During Nintendo’s last financial briefing, Shuntaro Furukawa became the company’s new president. Well, we got our first insight into Furukawa’s plans for Nintendo in today’s financial briefing. According to Furukawa, the “Nintendo 3DS is set apart from Nintendo Switch by its characteristics as a handheld game system that is lightweight, price-friendly, and highly portable. Affordability is the strong point that positions Nintendo 3DS in a niche clearly separate from Nintendo Switch. In the grand scheme of things, Nintendo 3DS has a prominent position as the product that can be served as the first contact between Nintendo and many of its consumers, and for this reason we will keep the business going”.

  1. There’s a lot of interesting information in the source besides what was touched on here. I recommend people take a look at the whole briefing before they flood the comments with how dead they think the 3DS is.

  2. Translation: “We won’t bugger off until every last 3DS in existence is void of CFW”.

And once every last person has purchased a New Nintendo 3DS, they’ll drop the news of a brand new handheld (despite the Switch and Gen 8 shifting towards it), with 3DS backwards compatibility, making all the late buyers feel cheap and stupid.

    1. It would be totally normal to bring out a replacement and nearly all consumer electronics typically get a ‘new’ version that comes out to improve or add new things that weren’t there before. If anything, the 3DS is well into an longer than normal lifecycle. Historically console life cycles are/were between 5-7 years. With the announcement of a successor pretty short from release on the handheld front.

The only difference this time is that the Switch is a home console that goes portable. It eats into its own market. But most successful companies eat away their own market with new products before a competitor beats them to it. The question is if there is room for a dedicated handheld or will they sell a portable only style Switch. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time Nintendo sells a console without its primary selling feature ala 2DS.

      1. All I’m saying is, most old 3DS systems from the beginning have broken/are breaking down by now. Not to mention that Nintendo no longer fixes them.

But they still plan on releasing -crap ports of console games- “new games”. Some more N3DS-exclusive than others.

    1. Same here! They really need to let it go and focus 100% on switch… Remaster GameCube games for Switch in full HD and give us what we want! … I would of bought Luigi’s Mansion in a heartbeat but nah, both need to be on Switch as the third is in the way… In a world of HD and the Switch a better portable, what need is there for a system that’s not HD with awkward controls and everything else? … Where’s my Metroid prime trilogy HD!!!???

    2. Same, I hurt so badly when Luigi’s Mansion was announced for the 3DS. There is also a rumor they are Remaking Paper Mario for the 3DS. Just NO, if You want Paper Mario to be great again you need to put that game on a reverent system. The 3DS is old news Now Nintendo. If Sunshine comes to the 3DS I will well, Let’s just say I wont be happy or alive anymore. Jk, But I will be upset

  5. see, I really think they need to make a small updated “3DS HD” , HD screen (OLED would be nice, on the switch too) , flush touch screen (honestly though, the switch Is the first Nintendo display to have touch and be flush with the system), HD cameras, and updated chip set.
then let developers issue out patches to take advantage of the new features. switching to USB C would be nice too, as it would mean you could charge both systems using one cord.

    1. Quit believing their BS crap, this is the same company that in 2005 said the GBA was still alive, only for 2006 to declare it dead, done in by the DS. This is following the exact same path, the 3DS’s sales have fallen off a cliff in every region (including America where NPD no longer tracks it because it’s so low), so expect this time next year for them to say that the new redesigned, and cheaper Switch has officially replaced it. They’re just trying to keep it from dropping any faster than it always is- it’s DOWN 65% year-on-year, that alone should shout drastically it’s a dying system whether or not Nintendo actually admits it (not to mention that game releases on it have continually tanked in sales, with Wario not even cracking the top 10!).

      1. They were probably testing the reception on the DS to see whether or not if a system with two screens would be well received, and once when it proved to be a viable replacement they pulled the plug on the game boy. The 3DS is more complicated because some games do take a lot of advantage over two screens, whereas the Switch only has one, and I don’t think you can use a stylus on the Switch either, meaning some games like rhythm games would need to be made differently to be more friendly towards finger tapping. I’m not sure if a game like elite beat agents could be easily played if you’re tapping with your finger, but the size of the screen on the DS was probably the main issue.

  7. If they release a new 3DS tomorrow that has Wii U specs and can run Switch games in 480 or higher res. First thing I’ll do is sell my Switch and buy PS4, now I have the best mobile games and best games on my big 4K tv.

Seeing people playing red dead redemption 2 make me feel like I got fooled again by Nintendo, I was one of the Wii U console owners and now I’m bored again with nothing but kiddy games to look forward. For some reason Pokemon Go PIkachu looks aimed at very young people, sucks bro, really thinking selling Switch.

    1. I’m also sick of looking at these Japanese old faces with heir PR Bull Sh*t and this and that and please understand, please trust us, it’s going on for years now, I’m so done man with all overhyping and promises and it’s gonna be epic this E3.

I want to play something good today !

  8. Didn’t they say something similar about the Nintendo Wii U ehich they then discontinued at the end of the very same year the Nintendo Switch got released? Is kinda bad enough they low-key killed off the 3D aspect of the system by pushing people into buying New Nintendo 2DS and making most of their latest games 2D only… i think Nintendo may be bluffing a bit and might be considering the end of the 3DS lifespan sooner than they letting us believe… I personally really enjoy using my 3DS but is pretty obvious where this is going… that sad day is coming soon.

  9. Meanwhile less and less games are announced for it as time goes on and sales are dropping fast. I really don’t get you Nintendo, lol.

  10. NO, I don’t want them to keep bringing remakes to the Switch, I WANT THEM ON THE SWITCH!, Luigi’s Mansion would have been so much better on the Switch in HD, I heard a rumore that they are remaking Paper Mario for the 3DS and it is killing me. I have a 3DS but I want these games on SWITCH. Stop it Nintendo, The 3DS has done it’s time

  11. 240p in 2018 is not acceptable, even for kids eyes… Smartphones, tvs, tablets, the switch are all in HD nowadays 150 for 2ds xl is way overpriced

  12. Went to Target a couple days ago and 3DS display was no longer there with a “handheld mode” Switch display in its place (in addition to the one attached to a monitor). Seemed like the whole Nintendo section was refreshed on top of it.
Seeing this, I can get a sense for where the near future is heading…
