Illumination Entertainment “Working Closely” With Miyamoto On Mario Movie

The Super Mario Bros movie is progressing well according to the team at Illumination Entertainment. llumination’s Chris Meledandri has revealed that the crew is working extremely closely with Mario creator and all-round genius game developer, Shigeru Miyamoto, to perfect the movie and to achieve their shared vision.

“I like that this was not done well the first time,” said Illumination’s Chris Meledandri, referring to the 1993 live-action abomination starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi. “I  think that’s more exciting or more worthy than simply making another version of a film that was done incredible well to begin with.”

“It’s an ambitious task,” he continued. “The challenge is taking things that are so thin in their original form and finding depth that doesn’t compromise what generations of fans love about Mario, but also feels organic to the iconography and can support a three-act structure.”

“We are keeping him [Miyamoto] front and center in the creation of this film. I’ve rarely seen that happen with any adaptation where the original creative voice is being embraced like we’re embracing Miyamoto. There’s a history in Hollywood of people believing that they know better than the people responsible for a property. I’ve made that mistake before.”

  1. I don’t mind an animated mario movie, as long as it follows the story of something like paper mario, the Mario and Luigi series, or hell even Super mario sunshine. I’m hoping for the best!

  2. This can mean a few things:

    1. The movie will have quality writing (and hopefully Odyssey Peach won’t return) and won’t have Illumination’s typically pandering.
    2. The movie will hopefully resemble the above render image.
    3. Because Miyamoto is there, he will be damned if Mario has actual dialog, like a normal protagonist does. Bad.

    1. And what was wrong with peach in mario odessey?

Are you talking about the bit where she was pressured into choosing between mario and bowser… Or her not putting out because mario saved her?

      1. The part where she snapped at Mario and showed zero gratitude for his troubles.

        Or an apology.

If Nintendo is hell-bent on holding onto THAT Peach, then chances are we’re going to get a bitchy SJW Peach, far worse than DiC/BotW Zelda or Princess Bubblegum.

      1. So she’s this bad in ALL the recent Mario games, or just that one scene in Odyssey (for that one time only)?

        Okay then.

  3. But will we have Minions singing the Mario theme at the beginning of the movie, effectively having Mario crossover with both Minions and Rabbids (Not at the same time?)

    1. That Minions movie is the biggest piece of shit animated movie I’ve ever watched. I couldn’t believe that someone actually made this.

  4. The fact that it’s animated gives me hope for the final outcome. The live-action movie was doomed from the start as Mario is ill-suited for that.

I just wonder what sort of plot they’ll use, and what they’ll do regarding the voice cast.

  5. They are embracing Moyamoto? I hope he’s a touchy feely guy.

On a more serious note, I really have high hopes for this movie. As much as I enjoy the bad Mario Bros movie, something with quality and the input of Mr. Nintendo himself is bound to be better.

    1. Maybe.

Keep in mind that this is the same guy who screwed up Star Fox Zero, and intentionally gives Mario as little dialogue as possible.

And that this is also a major big-budget feature-length film on the big screen.

  6. Some people are fed up with reboots of GOOD movies. If they rebooted more movies that failed the first time around, these people might be more inclined to go see it. Provided the reboot is a vast improvement, anyway.

    1. Come to think of it, I haven’t really watched any of the reboots released lately, I did watch Ghostbusters reboot, and it turns out I’m apparently a misogynist.

  7. I’m glad Miyamoto is behind all this. If it was just Illumination it would likely be trash. If it were up to me, there wouldn’t be a movie at all, but whatever.

  8. I really wish Illumination wasn’t doing it, but regardless, if this succeeds, think of the implications- more Nintendo media. This could lead to more projects like a Zelda TV/Netflix series, a Metroid movie trilogy, Splatoon cartoon, who knows?
