Reggie Is “Confident” They Will Reach 20 Million Units For Switch, But Michael Pachter Disagrees

Nintendo has a looming task ahead of them to shift 20 million Nintendo Switch consoles on the back of Pokemon: Let’s GO, Pikachu and Eevee! and Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says he is confident the company will achieve this target while industry analyst Michael Patcher isn’t so sure.

Nintendo set this challenge for itself in spring, announcing it would sell 20 million units of the Switch in fiscal 2018; a lofty number considering it shipped 15 million over the previous 12 months. Through the first half of the fiscal year, 5 million Switch consoles were sold, meaning Nintendo will have to move 15 million in six months.

We’re feeling confident in our momentum and it’s not just a stellar launch of Pokémon, it’s not just what appears to be a stellar launch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. That Black Friday through Cyber Monday time frame was critically important to us, the remaining shopping days now through Christmas are critically important to us. More days right after Christmas as consumers receive gift cards or take unwanted gifts and monetize into things like Nintendo Switch are important to us. So, this is going to be an ongoing effort to make sure that we drive our business forward through the balance of this holiday season but also the first calendar quarter as well.

“The share price tells you that the market doesn’t expect them to hit 20 million,” Pachter says. “However, if they sell 15 million per year, they’re in good shape and they shouldn’t see a disruption in their momentum.”

  1. lol Michael Pachter..

well, I dont think they will be able to sell 20kk, but It’s nice to see their confidence, I’m hoping they will achieve it.

  2. when i count…
reggie says… 60% they do on x-mas time (incl. black friday and co).
so they wona reach 20 million.
60% of that is 12 million.
12 million plus the 5 million sold give us 17 Million sales of switches.
so if they wona reach that goal the x-mas time sales must up to 75% sales from the first 6 month.
    and thats a lot.
i dont think (but i hope they reach it for us gamers and thirt partie supports) they get theire goal.
1 time in my life i agree patcher…
they will sold 15 million do 17 millions.
ps: im not a friend of patcher.

  3. While 20 mil would be a surprise, citing the market is a weird thing. It’s very difficult for the market to judge consumer trends on things like video games and the market has drastically undervalued Nintendo several times. I would never invest in a gaming company because it’s far too speculative for my investment strategies, but Patcher only gets cited in video game news, never investment news, and that should tell you something.

    1. All you need to know is that not even a year after Iwata’s death, this asshat referred to him as “the late and not-so-great Satoru Iwata”. That’s why we hate him around here, among other reasons but that’s the big one.

    1. Unreliable in that more often then not, his predictions when he’s right are practically obvious if you actually know what you’re talking about so anyone with a brain, really. And when he’s wrong, it’s because he said something incredibly stupid.

Least that’s how I’ve always seen this guy, anyway.

  4. didn’t this fool claim his opinions are facts and that then NX was gonna flop? he also said that with no key 3rd party games on launch would make the Switch flop and im still waiting for him to say it flopped.

    1. If Nintendo had continued down the path they started with Wii and with how they screwed up with the Wii U, Pachter would have been right. Of course, that outcome was obvious to a lot of people, not just Pachter, so him being right wouldn’t have been a big deal, anyway.

Fortunately, Nintendo corrected their course (for the most part) so the Switch didn’t go down this dark path of continued failure.

  5. I don’t care about the numbers, but I do know that more and more people that I know are getting Switches (or is it Switch’s?)

  6. Why is this guy even relevant? He just makes stuff up! Real analysts analize. This guy just claims things with no backing!

    1. Or he ends up claiming something that anyone with a brain could have also came up with & doesn’t take an a.n.alyst to figure out.

(Ugh! WordPress needs to quit grasping at straws and labeling a word that just so happens to have a s.e.xual term in it as bad & then putting a comment in “awaiting moderation” hell because of it!)

      1. When you thought mankind can’t fall any deeper, it starts censoring words. Because kids become murderers or rapists if they read “bad” words on the internet.

  7. Remember at the beginning of this year when Pachter said that the Switch would only sell 8 million over this entire fiscal year? Now he’s trying to subtly and quietly revise it to 15 million and hope no one realizes how idiotic his original prediction was.
