US: Reggie Says With Regards To Attach Rates The Switch Is Performing At “Historic Levels”

Switch games

A recent interview has been published by Variety who had the chance to talk with Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime. Mr. Fils-Aime told the site that with regards to software attachment rates, the Nintendo Switch is performing at “historic levels” in the United States.

“…[I]n terms of traditional attach rate, the Nintendo Switch is performing at historic levels,” says Fils-Aime. “As we sit here today, ‘Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,’ ‘Mario Kart 8 Deluxe,’ ‘Super Mario Odyssey,’ each one did attaching at better than 50%, meaning each of these games in the United States across the population of hardware consume one out of every two consumers that bought those games. And we’ve never seen 50% attach rates to begin with and seeing that across three different games coming up on to our second holiday is completely unheard of.”

      1. In terms of high-profile games, he’s right. Each year, Nintendo hypes one game above all others (Zelda 2016, Mario 2017, Smash 2018), which encourages high attach rates for those games. Usually, there are only a handle of other big games each year, and they also get a ton of advertising (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokemon Let’s Go). The Switch arguably has many other good games, like Octopath Traveler and all the Indy games, but overall, Nintendo’s model is to put out a few unmissable games each year, rather than get a bunch of third parties to all put out competing games at the same time.

    1. What are you talking about? I never owned a Nintendo system that releases great games faster than I could possibly buy them. And I owned all systems since N64 including all handhelds.

      1. The Snes , wich offered loads of quality games like the PS1,2,3,4 after that. Basicly Sony took over after the Snes cause Nintendo was stubborn like they always are and all third party moved away to this new console called PS1

    2. So far I would buy Zelda and Mario thats it all the great third party is on other consoles and Nintendo first party ain’t what it used to be eather besides Zelda and Mario and hopefully Soon Metroid. The last good Metroid got released in 2007 , should have gotten the same treatment as Zelda and Mario if you ask me.

      1. If I had a switch I’d have 0 games. I dont care about indies, wii u ports or inferior/ old third party games. no, I dont care about mario odyssey. dont care about splatoon 2 because of paid online.

      2. You’re one person, megamansurvives.

As Reggie said, statistically, they’re seeing 50% attach rates. During launch month in the Americans, more copies of the Switch version of Breath of the Wild were sold than actual Switch. If you look at the list of million+ sellers on Switch on Wikipedia, all but the last one on the list are Nintendo first party games.

  1. For the sake of context, I started looking up top selling games on earlier Nintendo consoles.

Wii U’s top selling game was Mario Kart 8, with around 8.5 million units sold… attach rate of around 50%. Impressive, but the next highest was nowhere close to that, and Switch has more overall sales, so Switch definitely beats Wii U.

Wii’s top selling game, excluding pack-in games (Wii Sports), was Mario Kart Wii, with around 30 million sold. Way under 50%, but also way more in absolute sales.

My goal was to make some kind of point about the importance of overall sales vs. attach rates, but then I noticed that on Wii, Wheel of Fortune outsold Mario Galaxy 2 by about a million units. I lost all faith in humanity and quit the project.

    1. Its a great idea but i know how you felt, when a crap game has sold more than a realy great game.
      the wii was showel ware…
in germany there was a game called schlag den raab (stefan raab…) something like american gladiators (from a hyped tv show)… jessus what a crap but it sold like shit… i still cant belive it.

    2. hi

know im not german im swiss (switzerland) neighbor from germany.
we speak swiss german but write and read german. the swiss german is like a dialect, thats why we have problem to write german LOL.
okay… the sentence style and grama are similar to english, so in the first stepp it should be easy. you go deeper its awefull and hard.
      but this like for us.
if you go deep in the language english is very strange and complicate.
ps: sorry for my english and spelling mistakes… and all the different times in english🙈

      1. Keine Sorge!

      Swiss german (schweizer deutsch)
Ich fahr mit em Auto zu de Bank um Gäld usezloh.

      Chunnsch au?

Chömet ihr (ehr) au is kino?

Mir gönd is Kino (the same sentence for future and present)

So we have mostly shorter sentence and words.
Swiss german is just for spelling.

      Money = Geld = Gäld

Swiss german has no grama and ortography… we write like we talk and with the dialects…

Money could be in a diffrent district…
      Gäld, Gäud, Kohle…

    4. You did good homework, ai841, and it shows something important about these metrics. Overall statistics like overall game sales don’t always tell the whole picture. When you see something like Wheel of Fortune outselling Mario Galaxy 2, it gives you a sense of what the overall appeal of the system is. It shows that other than hardcore Nintendo fans, the gaming demographic was “casual”. For the Switch it seems like it, much like the Wii U is just for Nintendo games and to a less degree, indie titles.

  2. The Wii U had incredible attach rates. In the long-term, I don’t think the Switch will be able to match those – but that’s only because the Wii U sold so few units and sold only to dedicated Nintendo fans who were obviously going to buy the likes of Mario Kart and Smash.
