Nintendo is currently on a roll with the Nintendo Switch system which has proved to be a hit around the world. Japanese publication The Nikkei managed to speak with the company’s president Shuntaro Furukawa who was open about the companies future in a recent interview. With streaming thought to play a huge part in the next generation systems from Microsoft and Sony it seems as though this could be something that Nintendo is considering further down the line, rather than creating dedicated video game hardware.
It has been over 30 years since we started developing consoles. Nintendo’s history goes back even farther than that, and through all the struggles that they faced the only thing that they thought about was what to make next. In the long-term, perhaps our focus as a business could shift away from home consoles – flexibility is just as important as ingenuity.
I like that they’re flexible. Not liking the their inference that they may move away from home consoles.

If you continue to say the system will be phased out, you are bound to be right sooner or later. lol So far, they’ve been wrong but maybe 2019 will finally be the year they can say “the 3DS is phased out” & it actually be right for a change.

I think he is talking about the possibility of changing into something unrelated to videogames. Nintendo making videogames is only a recent part of their history and they have tried many different things before.

What he wants is relevant. Right now Nintendo really doesn’t have any of the top selling third party games so what the majority of the market seems to like is NOT on a Nintendo system and can’t be at the moment.

You left out the most important part about that interview. After that he says he wants to create more smartphone games because of their continuous stream of revenue. I love Nintendo, but they’re going to make me more of a Sony fan if they go down that route.

I think he means getting their IPs more recognized by putting them in more places for ppl to see like say smart phones, movies, theme parks, etc. I don’t think they can really stop making consoles because some games require a special Nintendo only set up ala touch screens, motion controls and what not (for better or worse) I don’t think they can make Nintendo games be the same on consoles that are literally stripped down PCs. I mean they could but what would separate a Nintendo game from anything else other than nostalgic characters? If you don’t keep putting your IPs in front of people from a young age and beyond eventually the magic dies so they must remain flexible and put their IPs in front of as many ppl as possible. Just my take.
