A Metroid 64 Game Never Happened Because Of The N64 Controller & Another Company Declining To Make One

A 2010 interview that GamesRadar did with Super Metroid director Yoshio Sakamoto recently resurfaced. In the interview, Sakamoto explained why there was never a Metroid game on the Nintendo 64. Sakamoto gave two reasons, the first being why he didn’t make one himself. He said that “I was actually thinking about the possibility of making a Metroid game for N64 but I felt that I shouldn’t be the one making the game. When I held the N64 controller in my hands I just couldn’t imagine how it could be used to move Samus around. So for me it was just too early to personally make a 3D Metroid”.

Sakamoto also explained that Nintendo approached another company to make one, but Nintendo was turned down. He said that”Nintendo at that time approached another company and asked them if they would make an N64 version of Metroid and their response was that no, they could not. They turned it down, saying that unfortunately they didn’t have the confidence to create an N64 Metroid game that could compare favorably with Super Metroid. That’s something I take as a compliment to what we achieved with Super Metroid”.

  1. Well there’s a possibility that Metroid May skip the switch as well if it’s only just getting going with retro.
So no Metroid on 64 or wii u and maybe switch.
I can imagine it’s a tough game to develop and with so much riding on it to follow on from the previous primes it’s gona take a pretty amazing game.
Just like back with the n64 it would of been a fair feat to up the game from super Metroid.
I think Nintendo have obviously done the right thing with ditching what they had of prime 4 to date and gone with retro studios to hopefully make a genre defying classic.

    1. Hopefully, when Prime 4 comes out, it will have a multiplayer mode that outshines Hunters.

And personally, I hope for tons of unlockable content (especially characters) in a fully fledged multiplayer experience.

      1. Some of you need to let that game go. Sakamoto has had more success with Metroid than failures. Tanabe was responsible for Federation Force, a far worse game. Should we ignore all the success he’s had with the rest of the Prime series because of that one bad apple? Gotta give Sakamoto & Tanabe the benefit of the doubt as they’ve both been very good for the Metroid franchise with both only having one failure tied to them.

  2. Nintendo should go ahead and try to make a Metroid 64 for the Switch. Also, they should make a Super Kid Icarus.
    Viva la retro!

  3. I always felt that gameplay wise, Other M felt the closest to what Metroid on the N64 would have been like. 2.5D-ish stages that you are not necessarily stuck moving in only 2 directions with some 3D movement and a first person stationary mode to fire weapons similar to OoT.
