SEGA Would Like A New Challenge For Sonic 30th Anniversary

It’s hard to believe but Sonic the Hedgehog will be celebrating his 30th anniversary in 2021! SEGA of course has big plans for the event. Japanese site 4Gamer recently chatted to Sonic Team boss, Takashi Iizuka, who told the publication that the team were ready to embrace a new challenge for Sonic’s 30th.

4Gamer: Finally I’d like to ask about the future of the Sonic series. In 2021 it will be the series’ 30th anniversary. Do you have anything planned for that?

Iizuka: I think planning for that 30th anniversary will have to begin now. I’d really like for us to take on some sort of new challenge for it though.

      1. What SEGA needs to do is take a nice long time, and work on an actually good game that can bring people back to the series. Sonic Mania was great, but it’s not a game that makes me want to return to the declining franchise. I don’t know if I’m only speaking for myself here, but a game with a well thought out and deep story, villains that aren’t edgy, and plots that aren’t so cliched and easily expected. A higher game difficulty would be appreciated, and where Tails or Knuckles is actually needed in the story. Can’t stand it when they make either of the 2 completely useless when they’re the main trio of the whole franchise. They don’t need such an emphasis on making new cool looking villains to appeal to the newer generation. I feel like that’s all they’ve been trying to do in their recent games, just trying to get new fans by introducing new characters and new concepts. Maybe I’m incorrect in saying that, but I just don’t think that constantly trying to make new things is gonna make it any better. Sonic Mania went back on the classics, and turned out great. That’s what they need to do now. They should just take all the characters and worlds they already have and work on refining them into something that’ll make fans generally interested in returning to it all.

      2. @BSkullClad I already know they weren’t made by Sonic Team. I was just simply using that as an example of how, it’s a great game that makes me want to play it over and over, but doesn’t make me want to play other sonic games or return to the series. They need a game that makes the series exciting again is what I’m saying.

      3. The guy stating this is the head of sonic team, the “us” is sonic team, the they in this statement therefore applies to sonic team and b’s suggestion that games not made by sonic team disprove keins statement is stupid and corrected by pointing out those games were not made by sonic team

  1. How about Sonic as we remember him but make the game play better. More difficult maybe and without all the other friends there getting in the way. But don’t get paramount to design him!!

  2. Iizuka: “I think planning for that 30th anniversary will have to begin now. I’d really like for us to take on some sort of new challenge for it though” Maybe making a enjoyable game.

  3. Just let Christian Whitehead make and direct the making of a Sonic Adventure 3, which may be what can save 3D Sonic at this point.

  4. For the love of all that is holy just bring back the “Chao Garden”! They are long over due on making it with Sonic Adventure 3/Super Sonic Adventure (SA1&2 remake) so might as well just meet us half way and bring back the CG only… Ugh, the extreme demand for both the new SA and CG have been falling on deaf ears for far too long, please SEGA just listen this one time.
