Nintendo talks about game censorship

Sony has received a reasonable amount of backlash recently with its censorship of certain Japanese titles. Nintendo on the other hand has been fairly unconcerned about the issue. Speaking during the shareholders meeting, the company said that they will leave the decision down to the various ratings boards across the world to determine the adequate age rating for third party video games. Here’s Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa’s response:

Nintendo, as do 3rd-parties and their software, applies for an objective rating from 3rd-party organizations prior to release. If platform-holding companies choose arbitrarily, the diversity and fairness in game software would be significantly inhibited. We provide parental controls that can be used to apply limits.

  1. There’s something I have noted since the last few weeks. The ads are becoming more annoying and there are invasive pop ups. Those pop us even stops the music that I’m listening. I believe I’m not the only one that has experienced such things.

  2. I just realized that Shuntaro Furukawa wasn’t seen or heard of during E3 or the Nintendo Direct. I guess that answers the question I had when he was first hired……”I wonder if this new guy will be as entertaining as Iwata was, and appear in the Directs etc.?”.

No pun intended, but things have been pretty dead since Iwata passed away. Even Reggie was hardly seen since Iwata passed (and then he retires at a fairly young age, for reasons I still don’t understand). This just goes to show how cool and unique Satoru Iwata was, and how nobody can ever truly replace him. I miss the entertainment he brought to the Directs.

  3. With parental controls & the ESRB, there is no reason to censor games. ESPECIALLY ones for bloody fucking adults like Mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive, Senran Kagura, etc. Oh right. Some things need to be censored even for adults because it’s “hateful towards women” or some other such PC nonsense. It’s a video game with fictional characters.

Don’t like the nudity, sex.uality, etc? Easy fix. Don’t buy it! Go help out real people & leave the fictional characters alone, so the rest of us that don’t mind it can bloody enjoy it.

Anyway, Nintendo needs to give Eternal Darkness to a 3rd party developer so they can give the game an HD remaster with updated, smoother graphics. Eternal Darkness in UE4 would be so fucking awesome! Oh & they should definitely let Monolith Soft make that more “adult” game, too!

    1. If Sony continues down this dark path, at the very least, I hope these developers can find their place on either Switch or PC.

That seems to be what they are doing though, thankfully.

  4. Sony is censoring games while Nintendo sits back and watches? How the tides have turned…

This is a complete 180 from the situation with the N64 and PS1.
