Game Freak says Pokemon Snap 2 would need a “very unique twist”

UK video game news publication Game Central managed to secure a chat with Pokemon producer Junichi Masuda and director Shigeru Ohmori. One of the things which the site asked was whether there’s a possibility we could eventually get a new Pokemon Snap game. With the advent of new technologies such as Nintendo Labo it could well be the perfect time for the company to try it. However, Mr. Masuda said if they did revisit the series it would need a “very unique twist.”

GC: You had the Wii U GamePad and now you’ve got Nintendo Labo VR, which has an actual physical camera, why is there not a Pokémon Snap 2?! I’ll pre-order it right now if you agree to make it!

Both: [laughs]

JM: [laughs] All I can say is that I don’t think we can just make the same thing again. So we’d have to come up with a very unique twist on this if we do make another one.

  1. The game needs a gimmick just like X and Y, Sun and Moon, and Sword and Shield that is what this article is saying.

    1. Too much work. Let’s make an unfinished game and why not release some Pokémon with DLC later on?

  2. I always found it hard to understand why people like Pokémon Snap. I played that game for just a little while years ago, and I didn’t see the point. Just riding a railcar snapping pictures of Pokémon? Why is that exciting? It definitely felt like a game aimed towards little kids.

    1. I’m kinda mixed on whether the rail car should be ditched or not in a sequel. On one hand it added a challenge where you have to wait just the right moment for the perfect picture, and if the car goes too far you’re out of luck, but if you were free to roam around you could explore more of the environment.

    2. It was the challenge of wanting to snap them all, and snap good enough pictures to get a high score and thereby unlocking new stuff. It was about seeing all the Pokémon in their natural habitats, finding out the mystery of the huge eggs in some of the levels, finding out all the little secrets and solving all the puzzles. It was something of a puzzle-adventure game. I’ve never been hugely into photography in real life, but when Pokémon was added to the mix, it was so much fun for me.

    3. It’s because it’s the kind of game that you can just sit back, relax, enjoy the scenery, enjoy the environmental music, and take pictures of it all. It’s the calm type of game that makes you feel like you’re in that world taking pictures. It’s like why people like the Harvest Moon Series, it’s because it’s a nice easy-going peaceful farming simulator game. As fun as Pokemon is for all the battles and legendary fights, it also has beautiful scenery and forests, which Pokemon Snap exploits.

  3. Why though? All you need is new Pokemon in new environments with the option to use gyroscope controls with the Switch’s handheld mode to take pictures of them like with a real camera, emphasis on option. All you need is that and it would sell like hot cakes, no weird gimmicks besides that camera control scheme. It was nice seeing how Pokemon would behave in their natural habitat.

I don’t really understand the current state of Pokemon, it feels like we can’t even get a proper spinoff game nowadays.

  4. “I don’t think we can just make the same thing again”

Didn’t stop you from making Ultra Sun/Moon. All you did was repeat 90% of Sun/Moon.

    1. Was leagues better than Sun and Moon though. I really think Gamefreak needs to give away their rights to pokémon. They owe that franchise everything and now they pretty much just threw it away. Dudes need to realize that they are nothing without it and come crawling back to us.

  5. All it needs is some obvious and otherwise natural additions. More content (obviously) with some interesting level design, day-night system and weather system, branching routes in the levels that give you interesting angles and close-ups of Pokémon you only previously saw way in the distance (and new sub-areas with all-new Pokémon), some cool new items and environmental interactions, and maybe even a free-roam mode (that wouldn’t add to your score, since it would be OP, but would give you some cool shots to share with friends).

I get that Nintendo is scared of a photography-based game, but the excuse I’ve always seen in the past is that they don’t think photography is considered interesting anymore. I’d argue photography is bigger than it’s ever been, due to phone cameras being so widespread. Just add a selfie-mode, and you’re good to go. Sure, add in a side-game that you think would make for a nice cherry on top, but please just deliver the game already. It has so much potential.

  6. I just had a thought.
What a First Person Pokemon game where you can explore and open world of Pokemon to take photos of various places like you’re an apprentice to Todd Snap. It’ll be Free-Roaming and you can take loads of photos only if you’ve got some film which would be limited, and maybe you can buy a variety of film that has different effects like the way you have several Pokeballs that all have different abilities.
    Here’s what I say:

    – First Person Open World Exploration game set in the Pokemon Universe, with some puzzle solving elements to make it more challenging to get some photos.

    – Different varieties of film that have actual effects on the film quality as well as on new “Hidden Pokemon” that can only be taken on certain Films.

    – Weather Cycle that can impact what type of Pokemon you can encounter.

    – Different areas such as a City with shops and industrial areas to spralling grasslands, lush forests or barron deserts.

    – Vehicles such as the buggy have been upgrade so you can traverse the new open world much faster, maybe as an award for when you finish the first few set of missions in the City.

    – A Map which you can actually place a variety of markers on to point out Spots of Interest, Small Towns or Pokemon Sightings.

    – Pokemon Companions who can help you locate some Pokemon by using calls or even helping you with your shot by interacting with the other Pokemon.

  7. Here’s an idea: How about you play as Red, you can only take pictures of Y, and there are no Pokemon?

  8. This constant need for twists… >_> Fans just want another Pokemon Snap, another F-Zero, another Starfox, why can’t you wrap your heads around that?? It doesn’t _always_ need a unique twist, and the fact alone that there’s a whole new generation of players by now who might not even know the old games anymore should be enough of a reason to make new ones…

  9. Smh, not everything needs a “Unique Twist”. It’s literally a Pokemon-Photography Game. You’re just taking pictures and enjoying the scenery, what “twist” could it possibly need? Just make the game and fans will be happy, instead of getting stuck on how it needs some unnecessary unique new gimmick or something and leaving the fans to assume the game will never happen..

  10. Is it so hard for them (or Nintendo in general, really) to just listen to their customer base? It’s been 20 years since the original Pokemon Snap and now people want another one. People (myself included) have been BEGGING for a new F-Zero game in the vein of GX. We don’t care or even want some some stupid new gimmick- we just want to race at six times the speed of sound as our favorite anonymous bounty hunter and his ensemble of oddities. Where’s Pikmin 4 that was allegedly close to done YEARS ago!?

Not every sequel needs a twist or something new; just look at Marvel and DC movies- they’ve been doing the whole superhero-saves-the-world-among-crashes-and-explosions for over a decade and no one (except me apparently) is tired of those (though seriously, you see one superhero movie, you’ve seen ’em all)!

Point is, just take suggestions from the user base from time to time- that’s how you keep them!!

  11. You dont need a unique twist smh….. just make it longer and more diverse.

The original was so short (which made sense given the time it was made) all we want is a longer more involved pokemon snap

    1. I agree with what he said I loved the game if you make one for the switch it should have all pokemon discovered including legendaries but I don’t think mega forms should be required it should be Ash’s friend that takes pictures from the show as the character an you should be able to travel instead of being on a rail car instead of seeming like your on a set course
