(Update) Detective Pikachu is now the all-time highest grossing video game movie

Update: It seems Amazon’s Box Office Mojo miscalculated the figures and it is still World of Warcraft at the top. Thanks to ArtLance on Twitter for pointing that out!

For 3 years, Warcraft had been the highest grossing video game movie of all time. Despite an unhappy critical reception and financial flops around the world, it managed to rake in $433,000,000. This was largely due to China, where the movie received $220,000,000. Well, a new video game movie has claimed the throne, and it has more than China to thank for that

Detective Pikachu, has now managed to obtain $436,000,000, making it the new all-time highest grossing video game movie. The Pokemon movie has grossed $143,300,000 in the United States and Canada as of July 14th, compared to the $46,610,000 that Warcraft made in North America a few years ago. However, what ultimately pushed the movie past Warcraft’s total are the 5 regions that are still currently playing the movie in their cinemas. Norway, New Zealand, Slovenia, Portugal and Colombia spent $6,694 on the movie this past week. The movie’s approval rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes is 67%, compared to the 28% approval rating of 2016’s Warcraft.

  1. I really liked the movie. I had more fun in it than with Endgame (I’m not saying I didn’t like it, I just had a better time with Detective Pikachu)!

  2. Because it’s a video game movie adaptation that doesn’t suck (mostly). My only gripes with it were that I felt too few Pokemon got shown off with realistic appearances (I was really hoping to see ones like Lucario, Sharpedo, and Noctowl) and one major plot point didn’t make sense.
