In 2016, Eiji Aonuma teased the remake of Zelda: Link’s Awakening

It isn’t surprising that Zelda games can take a while to create. However, what may surprise you is that Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma teased a Zelda game a few years before it was announced, and no one noticed until today. You see, in 2016, Aonuma was interviewed by EDGE magazine. When EDGE asked him what he wanted to do next, Aonuma said “actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they’re also telling me to make more Zelda games. I can’t really share much; I’m not sure I’m allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That’s all I’ll say”.

Aonuma’s “live as a thief” tease refers to an encounter that Link has with a shopkeeper in Zelda: Link’s Awakening. 3 years later, in this month’s EDGE issue, the team decided to ask Aonuma if he had teased the remake of Link’s Awakening that day. Aonuma laughed, then admitted that he did, indeed, tease the game. The remake of Zelda: Link’s Awakening launches worldwide on the Nintendo Switch on September 20th.

  1. I’d actually name myself Thief in Links Awakening just so I’d not suffer the name change when stealing from the shop.
