It is looking like the next DLC for Super Smash Bros Ultimate will include SNK character

terry_bogard_smash

The next downloadable content pack for Super Smash Bros Ultimate will apparently include an undisclosed SNK-based character. The news was accidentally revealed on the Nintendo UK eShop listing for the Challenger Pack 4. It seems likely that it will either include Mai or Terry Bogard. It’s more likely to the latter but we shall have to wait and see when the official announcement comes presumably sometime later this year.

    1. Yeah, I was hoping for Terry myself. Been speculating since launch that something SNK and Terry could potentially be a Smash candidate because of all the SNK games Switch has gotten. If Kyo or Nakouru gets the spot I’ll be real sad. Terry Bogard plz!

I think this Terry should be the character since everybody talks about him like the mascot of the company.

      Do you prefer another Swordfighter?

    1. Yeah there’s that SNK Heroines where Terry is a girl. Perhaps they’ll do what they did with Robin and Corrin and have the female alt. Besides that’s the game currently on Switch. Personally I’m hoping for Haohmaru but I know I’m the minority lol.

      1. I would be really down if it was Haohmaru, but he would be a great representative; I can’t deny that. Samurai Shodown is quite popular again, and it will be on Switch this winter, so who knows? Still want Terry though xP

      You will not be disappointed

  1. Most likely Terry, which I’m not super hyped about. I think having both Ryu and Ken covers the ‘basic fighting game main character’ and Terry would very much fit into that.
And I highly doubt we’d get someone like Mai, for obvious reasons.
There’s a possibility for the girl from Samurai Showdown with the bird, which is a unique pick I suppose.

But outside of their fighting games the only others I could realistically see getting in is Marco from Metal Slug or Athena from Psycho Soldier (who also shows up in their fighting games). I would much rather see one of those two in Smash but yeah it’s probably Terry.

    1. Nakoruru is considered one of the mascots, so it might be her. I can understand that you feel Terry is somewhat old and boring at this point, but I think he would be the better pick. He’s the guy people know about and would bring more people together to Smash. That’s the most important part – getting people together :)

      1. My friend and I were talking more about this. My main concern with Terry is that on his own, his moveset will be all too similar to Ryu and Kens generally. But we were talking about the possibility of the SNK rep actually being three fighters in a tag team format a la King of Fighters. Like Terry and two other popular characters in the series. If they did something like that the new fighter would be dope.

        1. One can only hope, but Terry is originally from Fatal Fury, which is a single fighter game. Sakurai is so focused on the origins of the Smash-characters, so I don’t know if that would happen if he was chosen.

On the other hand, Sakurai was playing a lot of King of Fighters on arcades back in the days, so he might pick Kyo, and then he could have a trio.
Problem is with King of Fighters is the fact that it’s SNK’s Super Smash before Super Smash xP It unites so many characters that everyone wants!

          1. Yeah, they could have Kyo lead the team, but I’d imagine they’d be okay with cheating by making three characters that regularly appear in KoF. I could potentially see a Kyo, Terry, Mai team (if they’re gutsy enough to put Mai in Smash Bros.)
But other than that the only other games that I think could rep SNK well would be Metal Slug or Psycho Soldier.

              1. Yeah that’s true. I’m putting a lot of stock in the fact that KoF was essentially an (if not the) inspiration for Smash Bros. Seems fitting for KoF specifically to be the game that crosses over in that case, but they got a few other options to pick from.

  2. Coming from someone who’s preorder the whole smash bundle with dlc fighters before the game launch, and seeing that a snk character might be the 4th fighter I’m oddly disappointed with the dlc. The dlc characters are nice and they have nice or cool movesets but there not characters I like or have any interest in.in my opinion it sucks that I payed money for third party extraganza, instead of a balance with 1st party and 3rd party characters. I don’t want to come off toxic though so if these are the characters you guys want than good for you and the fanbase.

    1. I can agree. Joker was maximum “meh” to me, and Dragon Quest almost even more “meh”, except for the fact he probably is the closest thing to Goku Smash will ever get. Banjo & Kazooie… it’s alright. I grew up with those games, but he’s been dead to me for many, many years, so can’t really say it was more than a “oh, he’s actually coming”-moment to me.

Terry would be a dream come true to me. I’ve been wanting him in Smash since Ryu. I’m generally a SNK fan so I’m quite pleased with this. Such a rich history, both with console and games that keeps on living to this day.

But it has been semi-comfirmed to be thirdparty the whole time? Reggie said it would be new series unknown to Smash (something like that) and we knew Nintendo themselves decides the DLC, and that it would be a business aspect focus on it.

      1. Well if the character is Terry your going to have a field day, also I know Reggie said that, but he said it at the game awards weeks before I had even preorder the game

        1. Yeah, you might be right about that. Well, we can only hope the last DLC will be something 1. party. My bet then would be Byleth if so.
If more 3. party I would like it to be Master Chief or Goku for those lols xP

          1. I honestly wouldn’t even care if it was a fire eblem character because dlc has been dry on 1st party anyway, I like the characters though I could never get into the the actual games but I always main them .

            1. Roy is my main. Fire Emblem ties in with Monster Hunter as my favourite franchise out there. Played the games since the first European release. Some of the games aren’t that good, but those which are good are REALLY good. First one on GBA (Wii U eShop) or Awakening is great places to start. Even Three Houses isn’t that bad of a starting point. I would recommend to stay away from Shadow Dragon (DS) if you’re ever going to give the series a try again.
I don’t really care what’s coming as DLC. If Terry comes I can definitely say I got everything I need. People want Waluigi and Rhythm Heaven and I say give it to them. Why not? But I wouldn’t say no to more FE myself.

  3. I can’t believe people at Nintendo are such amateurs to make these mistakes all the time.

Unless this is an intentional hint to generate buzz.

  4. Rant time

Not the worst choice for a DLC fighter, but still a disappointment. I didn’t like the SNK vs Capcom series because I hated how Capcom would crossover with anyone but Nintendo, but that’s in the past. I was hoping the last two DLC fighters where going to be a Namco character and a Capcom character so we can have the cut mii costumes like Joker with Sega mii costumes, but it’s clear to me Sakurai never cared about bringing back every mii costume. I just hope the final DLC fighter is a female. I like comparing my family to Smash bros characters, but Smash has way too few female characters, my mom’s side of the family has lots of females, and I’m convinced that number is only going to get bigger. My male cousin liking a gender neutral fighter (Pokémon Trainer) isn’t doing me any favors either. I’m desperate for a new female fighter, but I’m still picky. I’m not gonna buy just any female fighter. It’s probably too late for Shantae, but maybe a Touhou rep? And no, Kazooie isn’t good enough for me. She’s only a part of a fighter, and she’s Microsoft now.

    Rant over.

  5. If it’s Terry: meh.
Ryu and Ken are so boring imo, and I was really hoping for a female rep next.
Also, let’s be real. There are very few people that know who this guy is. Very strange pick if it ends up being him.
But, at least Banjo is coming. Still hyped for that. The rest of the DLC has been pretty underwhelming to me aside from Joker.

    1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

I don’t find Ryu and Ken boring but I understand the point where you say few people knows who this guy is. The problem is that we are not living in Japan where those characters are well known by people. I didn’t know the existence of King of Fighters till 2012. I wanted to play at least one title but I don’t have much time for play.
Maybe it can turn out to be a good character.

  6. I like King of Fighters and Fatal Fury but honestly I think Ryu Hayabus, Travis Touchdown, Sora, Viewtiful Joe…. pretty much anything else would be more interesting than an SNK fighter in Smash lol. Felt the same about Ken and Ryu and I love Street Fighter. I think it’s because Smash is to over the top to have some of these “serious” fighters .. I don’t know.

  7. Dang, I know nothing about SNK, I literally had to look it up. Are they more popular in Japan or something? Or maybe they only make genre’s I’m not into? I had to look them up, and the only games of theirs I had heard of were the Metal Slug games. Geez, I thought I knew a lot about video games but there’s so much I don’t know

    1. SNK had a console business back in the days. Their homeconsole, Neo Geo, used the same hardware as the arcade, so the consoles was quite powerful back in the early 90′. They used the same game for arcade and homeconsole, so they gained a lot of momentum from that. They even made games for the 1990’s NEO GEO AES up to 2004.

Fatal Fury, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug is some of their more popular franchises. They made some mini consoles and stuff the later years, but is more or less a gaming developer nowadays.

  8. Honostly at this point I don’t want their to be a female fighter, i rather a character make it in to represent a game series and they just happen to be a female character then they put one in just to put in a female character. There’s only 2 slots and it would be stupid for certain game series to get over looked for a smaller series just so they can say they added a female character.

  9. I like to see Mai in Smash Bros. I think she’s a much better SNK rep than Terry Bogard (Unpopular opinion).

  10. Honestly, i am going to be very disappointed if this is true… what is the point on getting a character from another fighting game? There is nothing fresh about it since is a character that has already been used in other fighting games and is already adapted for such! The previous DLC pack 1, 2, & 3 are characters that have never been in a fighting game and no one expected, but porting fighters from other already popular fighting games is kinda lame in my opinion… it was perfectly ok with Ryu and Ken but bringing more as DLC at this point is just boring… we need fresh new characters! Characters that we never expected to see and play as in a fighting game, specially in Smash! To name a few as examples it can be characters like Shantae, Sora, Lloyd Irvine, Hatsune Miku, heck even Mickey Mouse would be an unexpected interesting addition to the roster! Here is an idea, how about another SEGA character? Arle Nadja seems like an interesting candidate! Or add another Nintendo character like Funky Kong or Paper Mario, or maybe even Ninten from Earthbound Beginnings! Porting a fighting character from a fighting game to another, like that’s never been done before… Nintendo has got to keep adding something fresh, not recycled.

  11. Sora & Crono are the only characters I really want in Smash. Ryu Hayabusa wouldn’t be so bad, either. Sadly, with a Dragon Quest Hero in the game, Crono is most likely not happening. Sora would be perfect, though, since he does have a strong connection to Disney. Not too strong that Disney would have such a say in the character in Smash that they’d ruin it like they’ve done some other things lately.
