The Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC fighter video presentation is underway and it has been unveiled that Byleth from the acclaimed Fire Emblem: Three Houses will join Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Ultimate, unveiled for the first time the battle-hardened Fire Emblem character in action, who will enter the arena on Jan. 28 as the game’s newest fighter. Sakurai demonstrated Byleth’s unique ranged play style, and revealed the Garreg Mach Monastery stage and 11 new music tracks from the Fire Emblem series, all coming to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimategame for the Nintendo Switch systemlater this month.

“As Super Smash Bros. Ultimate continues to inspire friendly competition and heated matches on Nintendo Switch, the addition of Byleth from the beloved Fire Emblem series, along with the announcement of six more upcoming fighters, represents our commitment to supporting the game with new content that further enriches the overall experience,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will continue to welcome both newcomers and veteran players alike to enjoy the thrill of battle while exploring its unparalleled lineup of gaming icons.”

Byleth joins the ranks as the 80th legendary video game character included as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which features the biggest crossover of video game characters in history. Drawing upon Byleth’s chivalric exploits, their inclusion in the roster will change the tide of every battle they appear in, with clever strategic choices motivating each defensive posture and offensive attack in their move set. With a sword, axe, lance and bow in hand, prevailing in combat will often come down to selecting the right moments to hold ground or advance.

Byleth’s accompanying stage, the Garreg Mach Monastery, also features a variety of cameos from popular characters in the Fire Emblem series, including Edelgard from the Black Eagles, Claude from the Golden Deer and Dimitri from the Blue Lions.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will also receive a new Spirit Board, which features some of the other popular characters from the Fire Emblem series, along with a new classic mode route, “A Heroic Legacy,” which highlights classic Fire Emblem stages throughout the series’ storied history.

Additionally, new Mii Fighter costumes inspired by Cuphead, Rabbids, Altair and various Mega Man games will be available for purchase on Jan. 28. Players who purchase the Cuphead Mii Fighter costume will also receive a new music track, Floral Fury, which was originally featured in the game’s classic Cagney Carnation boss battle.

Finally, two fighters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have amiibo figures available for purchase at select retailers beginning on Jan. 17: Samus’s mysterious doppelganger, Dark Samus, and Simon Belmont’s whip-wielding echo fighter, Richter.

Additional new fighters, stages and music will also be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate through the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fighters Pass Vol. 2. Players can also continue to purchase the current Fighters Pass for a suggested retail price of $24.99 to gain access to the first five Challenger Packs. Playable fighters Joker, Hero, Banjo & Kazooie and Terry Bogard are all available now, with Byleth joining on Jan. 28. For only $5.99, players can also purchase the packs individually.

        They hear our complaints

    1. So lame lol. At this point FE has more characters than practically all other bigger/more popular IPs, like: Metroid, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, etc…. It’s kinda ridiculous.

      1. I agree with all of that except Star Fox. Star Fox COULD be more popular, but when the series only has one actually great game (being 64 and to a lesser extent its 3DS remake) and the rest are decent, mediocre, or straight-up bad *coughwheezeStarFoxZerocough*, it’s hard to say the series is popular when it piggybacks on one game. At least Fire Emblem has more than one entry that is unanimously considered good.

        1. Star Fox Adventures was a great game. Not a great Star Fox game, though, but I loved it. It’d be nice to get an HD Remaster of it! Or better yet, a remake to follow after Star Fox Zero with the original idea of Krystal as the main character instead of Fox. Still tie it into Star Fox, though. Also a different final boss would be nice, too. Or even better still, both!

          1. I thought it was good too, but yeah, that was so not Star Fox. I had a friend who blasted through the whole thing in 2 days when it first came out; I think my record was 5 days (those hoverbike-thingy sections were the worst).

Assault was waaaaayyy too short and had control issues, not to mention a rather generic plot, even by SF standards. I was a week into freshman year of high school when Command released on DS and I bought it on launch. I thought it was good back then, but playing it now, it’s mediocre at best and is way too easy until the Venom levels, where the difficulty only *slightly* increases.

…I don’t think I need to bring up the problems with Zero.

As for redoing Adventures with a bigger focus on Krystal and revamping the story and gameplay, um, YES! I would jump at the chance to make Krystal relevant again; it might be the boost she needs to become playable in the next Smash and we can FINALLY get a Star Fox fighter who doesn’t have the same core moveset, as she could use her staff and its abilities. That’s all I want.

    1. Don’t know if you’ll see this or not but is shadowvegeta doing okay? He disappeared from Discord almost two years ago (along with almost everyone else from the Discord he created.)

      1. Just saw this but he’s doing good haha. He’s been busy with work and I think school off and on. I know he said he doesn’t come on here much and I don’t either, I’ve started coming on a bit more recently but wasn’t on here most of last year at least. Thank you for your concern good sir I appreciate it and I’m sure he will too when I talk to him. How’ve you been?

          1. Lol yea Hollywood has been slacking. I’ve been going to music festivals and shows near where I live the last few years, music has taken over as the main focus of my free time. I’d play games more but there hasn’t really been much worth playing for my taste. More top quality 3D platformers and more old school style games would bring me back. A Vigilante 8 HD remake or remaster of the first and second game with online included would bring me back for sure lol. One of the classic games from that era I’ve been craving for years. Looking forward to the wonderful 101 remake, glad it’s coming in April. Hoping it sells well and gets a sequel cause I love the game. Animal crossing I’m looking forward to as well. My switch code is SW-8239-6226-3897 by the way. You getting either of those games?

            1. I’m not sure about Animal Crossing these days. Between YouTube, my backlog of PS4 & Switch games, & Dead by Daylight (PS4), I don’t think I’d have the time to put enough time into the game to justify buying it. To give you an idea, I only played Monster Hunter World on PS4 around only 3-5 times in short gaming sessions back when I got it when it first released. lol DbD has been my preferred choice of an online game to play on a regular basis (or as regular as I can when I’m not playing other games or on YouTube) these days.

  1. Lmao I literally joked to my friend saying it’d be Three houses swordsman just because I thought it was so ridiculous that another FE swordsman in the game, and it came true xD

The stream on right now having >50% dislike ratio says it all…

    1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

To be honest. I like Byleth.

    2. Ikr? they might as well make my german shepherd a character at this point. His special would be me sucking his 9-inch red taffy stick until he unloads his hot puppy tadpole chowder all over the battlefield!

    1. Another idiotic Fire Emblem character? There’s already far too many from those boring games. I will NOT buy this amiibo! I have to stop buying them eventually.

    1. Huh? Ungrateful? You know they’re selling this right? For money. Why exactly should someone be grateful that a company wants them to pay for a product they don’t want?

      1. While I would never suggest someone be grateful for a product that a company is selling, I will scoff at people who are legitimately upset at this news.
No one person is forced to purchase Byleth for Smash and if they bought the fighters pass expecting that the characters in it would be characters they wanted (out of the thousands of potential options it would just happen to be the specific ones they wanted) then they are fools who fell for the business model of selling hype with no further information.
If anything Nintendo is grateful for how stupid the fanbase is.

      2. “I will scoff at people who are legitimately upset at this news.”

How exactly do you determine the “legitimacy” of someone being upset on the internet?

    2. I wish they added that fire guy from Street Fighter who always says “To the Fire” and “To the Flame.” What’s his name? Maybe some more DK characters? Maybe Wa Luigi? Anyone that fights different.

    3. Why people complaining. But then want to get on me when I tell you Nintendo didnt make any games. Why you think we wasted over 30mins over one DLC character and stage. See yall bored. Only way to be satisfied of a Nintendo direct if the devlopers immediately work on games. That way in 35min we would see about 7 new games. But yall tired of my whining yet whining at every Direct.

  2. Oh boy, the character I did not know I wanted! The music selection is brilliant and the guests on the Monastery stage was cherry on top. I am quite excited and happy!! Thanks, Sakurai! :D

  3. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

I’m the only one who liked this last character in the first fighter pass?

      1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

I think there are 3 Devil May Cry games on Switch now but people thought about Dante because the devs said check out those dates and of those was January 16.

  4. I thought we are gonna get a female fighter, but a avatar fighter pass character from the new game works for me since this year is Fire Emblem series 30th anniversary this year.

    1. Oh, and the Cuphead Mii Costume was a great surprise. The only highlight of the stream for me. Too bad he wasn’t the fighter- could’ve gotten more of the game’s sweet sweet soundtrack in and a stage based on Hell with the Devil acting as a stage boss like Yellow Devil or Metal Face.

      1. Blizz has already said Sakurai could have any OW hero he wanted, I’m pretty sure he’d take them up on that offer. Tracer would make the most sense as the poster child for the game.

…I mean he sure as hell ain’t gonna make one of the healers like Moira or Mercy a fighter- best we’ll get of them is a spirit, which I am more than okay with.

      1. Kinda selfish taking a moment from a company that has rules for its broadcasting and saying “fuck it, I’ll use this platform without any consent or warning” there’s a time and place for things, Blitzchung picked the wrong place to get vocal…

He didn’t even make as big a deal as everyone else did…

    2. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

It would be hilarious if all the six dlc characters are from Fire Emblem.

  5. I’ll take Byleth over a Pokemon from the new garbage games. Three Houses was a fantastic game!

I, however, think Edelgard would have been a better option since she’s both an axe user and a villain character.

      1. Well, you’ve had quite a few months to get 10 or so hours into the game to see it. Plus it really isn’t that big of a spoiler. It’s common knowledge that the houses end up turning on each other.

  6. You know… I can appreciate the showmanship of Sakurai in revealing fighters like this… But I don’t know now. The 2nd challenge pack has already been decided so maybe it would be ethical to announce them before making it available for prepurchase.

      1. Not sure what you expect when the overwhelming majority of major video game characters are male, most of them being invented in the 80’s and 90’s when the customer base for video games was also overwhelmingly male.

      2. Ultra Instinct Grandma Super Saiyan Green Evolution

Piranha plant could be female. We also got Kazooie who is also a female. But I get what you are saying.

  7. I knew this would happen byleth was a automatic in my book, but I felt like it wasn’t possible with the entire dlc cast being third party glad this breaks that, but in reality I’m so dissapointed with entire dlc cast, not my cup of coco but still good for everyone else, the hype continues for dlc tho

  12. The only disappointment I feel with the 5th DLC character is the fact it’s not another 3rd party character. (Yes, I’m including Banjo & Kazooie for the obvious reason that the dev company that created him is no longer partly owned by Nintendo.) Other than that, I’m totally fine with this character. *shrug* Whatever, though. Least now I can finally buy the DLC 5 pack as none of the characters are huge disappointments.

    1. I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with Byleth (except that he/she is the third FE character who is a customizable base avatar the likes of Robin and Corrin, and admittedly I’m annoyed about having another FE character when series like Zelda still only have the Triforce holders), but if you ask me, his/her spot should have been swapped with Hero or Banjo and put them more into the middle of the wave. When you consider that the other four fighters were revealed to extensive fanfare while Byleth’s reception was lukewarm at best, he/she was just a really weak character to finish part 1 with.

Personally, I was excited when I heard about Joker, I’m indifferent about Hero because I’m not a Dragon Quest fan, I cried tears of joy at Banjo & Kazooie (I wish my best friend were alive to see them in Smash), and I though I’ve barely play KoF or Fatal Fury, I thought Terry was a cool addition. But Byleth? I can’t really get excited about them because of the timing. On top of that, if they had done Byleth in Hero’s slot, the character would have come out right around when Three Houses released; they could have capitalized on each other.

I have the pass so I’ll get them as soon as they drop and I’m still getting the amiibo for completion’s sake, but I just can’t actually be excited for the character.

      1. Ultra Instinct Grandma Super Saiyan Green Evolution

You cant really customize byleth tho. Only the name and clothes. But I agree with you. I loved fe3h but the timing is just horrible.
