Doom Eternal director talked about Doom slayer in Smash Ultimate but it never went anywhere

UK news publication The Metro recently chatted with Doom Eternal director Marty Stratton about the upcoming gore fest and the conversation got onto Super Smash Bros Ultimate. As you may have seen on social media there have been numerous requests for Doom slayer to appear in the game to some fans annoyance. Mr. Strattton said it was briefly discussed with someone at Nintendo, but it never went anywhere. Here’s his full comments:

GC: What about the rumours of Doom Slayer being in Smash Bros.? [This was a couple of days before the Byleth announcement – GC] Do you think it could ever happen?

MS: I don’t know. We’ve asked them.

GC: You asked them?

MS: Yeah.

GC: Well, that’s how Solid Snake got in it. Would they discount it just because of the gore and violence though?

MS: I dunno. You would honestly have to ask them. We’ve never been approached and said, ‘Hey can Doomguy be in Smash Bros.?’ But we’re open-minded if they wanna ask. But we hear it all the time [from fans]. Who would say no? [laughs]

GC: But you did ask them?

MS: We’ve had… I don’t even know who talked to who, but we’ve bantered with them. We have a great relationship with them through bringing Doom 2016 to Switch and that kind of stuff. So we have great people over there but it’s one of those things where it’s like, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool?’ But it’s never gone anywhere serious, so we’ll see.

      1. Is that a rule Sakurai has specified? I thought the two things he was adamant about was that the fighers originally debuted in a videogame, and second that they’re had an impact in gaming.
But I’m just joking about Master Chief. But who knows? Master Chief Collection might end up on Switch.

  1. Well, I don’t play doom because I’m not in to the series and I don’t play the series because I don’t know much about the series. I already know it’s a first/third person shooter series. If some people wanted doom guy to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, then it might be too late for that because Sakurai is already passing the final verdict on who will make it in as DLC fighter pass characters.

    1. Almost all the Doom games are on Switch nowadays, so it’s a great time to try it out. But Doom 2016 is a reboot, so you could pick up from there no problem. It’s pretty gory, and usually I’m not that into that kind of stuff, but the gameplay is soooo good it’s worth it.

  2. Doom Slayer would have been great. Doom has a long history on Nintendo. There’s still a chance I mean sakurai said only 5 characters comes around next video and he says 6 lol

  3. Eh, this doesn’t really mean much but I’m honestly done with leaks and predictions for Smash Bros. I’ve already got two of my three favorite game franchises in Smash (Mario and Dragon Quest) with my third having cameos as spirits (Resident Evil)
The six new fighters could come from anything and I would be cool with it.
Sure getting characters from games you like is nice, I was very happy to see Fatal Fury and Three Houses getting the Smash treatment, and DOOM would be another series I’d be elated to see.
But they can do whatever at this point. Throw in all the Minecraft, Fortnite, and Gen 8 Pokemon they want, the game will still be golden to me.

        1. Well, even Sakurai didn’t say anything about Master Chief, we still don’t have any proof if the series will come on Nintendo consoles. The series is usually meant for X-Box series as always. But anyway, who knows, most video game series always have a collection like Mega Man and Pac-Man.

          1. Halo is on PC and even Steam now as well. There was some rumours about having it on PlayStation 4 because MS now want their games to be everywhere.
But I bet Crash will show up as DLC.

If the latest rumour around is true then Crash is in.

    1. Well, we now got six more chances. Six more chances for all our most wanted characters (and hopefully no Fire Emblem swordsmen).
      Viva la Shantae!

      1. I wouldn’t mind one more Fire Emblem, like Hector with an axe. But I can’t complain. Would be fun with Master Chief in all seriousness. Still doubt it would happen.
        Lenge leve Crash Bandicoot!

      1. Well, I could try out the series. Myself but I really don’t know much about the series story or it’s whereabouts and I really don’t know about Doom guy will come to the crossover. Nintendo did admitted the series and it’s reboot coming to Nintendo Switch due to Nintendo Switch sales increase in 2018. My vote on the DLCs characters is still Shantae and Tails/Eggman.

        1. Doom 2016 is set on Mars, and they screw up a portal which leads to Hell. You’re just a nobody who is super strong and uses an armour and weapons you find on your way to defeat hellspawn. That’s more or less the same thing as Doom always have been about in a nutshell.

      1. Yeah, I’d probably have a similar reaction to that kind of reveal trailer. Just an audible groan at the thought of it with how little I care about games like that.
But I also really don’t care if that’s what we get or not, I’m content with what we already got.
Worst case scenario I just don’t buy Fornite Steve or whoever for Smash Bros.

I’m thinking March but it can also happen a Indie direct like last year in April and then Nintendo is going to do the E3 direct directly.

  7. There is only one problem with doom slayer in Smash: what would his move set be? Sakurai only picks characters where he can make a move set that fits the character, but all that doom slayer has is different weapons. You can’t make a Smash fighter that only attacks with different weapons. And ripping off limbs is obviously not gonna happen in Smash (not because of the gore, but because it wouldn’t make sense as a mechanic).

Doom Slayer can also do melee attacks. Just look in DooM Eternal. Not only he can punch a ddmon but he can use his blade to cut them.

I’m still hoping him in Smash since he is my 2nd most wanted character.

  9. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

Remember when Grant Kirkhope said that Banjo & Kazooie aren’t (because to me it isn’t a single fighter) DLC? Why do I have the feeling it’s going to happen again? Oh by the way if people says DooM Slayer is too violent then why Bayonetta can be in? She kills angels and demons with her monsters. Snake also killed people with his weapons. Joker has a real gun in the game.

    1. Then, there are cases like Hideo Kojima and Frank O’Conor deconfirming Snake and Master chief respectively. Violence isn’t the problem though. The real problem is Japanese market where Doom is obscure.

I think is censored or banned. Like Mortal Kombat.
