Shigeru Miyamoto says Virtual Console changed his mind about another Mario movie

We have got a brand new Mario movie coming in the future from illumination and thankfully it is animated this time round. Speaking to investors about Nintendo‘s various IP’s and particularly the Mario franchise, Mr. Miyamoto revealed that one of the reasons behind attempting another movie staring the famous Italian Plumber is that so many of his games have been made available and purchased on the Virtual Console.

“We do not do something like separating our IP development strategy depending on the touchpoint. For example, regarding IP development into movies, I was originally against Nintendo expanding into video-making, but am currently involved personally in using our company’s IP in film production; and the background behind this change  is because Nintendo has re-released many games via Virtual Console.

Our assets are our software, and even 30 years on, they are still active. However, unfortunately, when the original hardware compatible with the software is gone, we have no choice but to port it onto new hardware. After experiencing this process of bringing older software onto new hardware many times, I began to consider that our content business would be able to develop even further if we were able to combine our long-beloved software with that of video assets, and utilize them together for extended periods.

Basically, it’s not that ‘I want to make a Mario movie’, but that I began to consider that ‘we should bring more Nintendo content into the field of video-making’. With films, the amount of people who would contact our IP would widen, and increase the amount of people engaging with our IP. Then, we’d be able to further increase the spread of our media via video.”

    1. No, it just made him realize how people buy Mario because of his legacy, do he can use him as a stepping stool get all their IPs into other media. He probably wants to make a Pikmin movie over anything else.

    2. Well, I haven’t heard anything from him lately. The Sonic movie is just around the corner and I’m still hoping him and his team still considering making a Mario movie to continue virtual games legacy in the future.

Most people keeps buying Mario games because they like how the gameplay is really is still or something else.

  1. ” However, unfortunately, when the original hardware compatible with the software is gone.”

When exactly did that happen? Original consoles are cheaper now than they were 25-30 years ago, and if you want it in HDMI, Analogue makes HD Retro consoles without software emulation to create the most perfect representation of classic gaming on modern televisions physically possible.

The hardware’s not gone. Nintendo just isn’t the one selling it anymore.

  2. I pray that Nintendo fanboys don’t over complain when the first trailer drops, a la Sonic. “His mustache is wrong, fix it!” God help us all.

    1. This is a bit of revisionist history. It wasn’t nitpicky Sonic fanboys who hated the first Sonic trailer, it was the internet at large. That Sonic trailer was widely mocked everywhere on the internet that discusses pop culture in general.

    2. I think Mario’s mustache looking different will be the LEAST problematic change.
The reason everyone hated the Sonic visuals in the first trailer was because they made Sonic look like a freaky genetic experiment.
I don’t think people will get riled up over a mustache as long as he still looks like Mario.

  3. Fair points. I was sceptical at first because the minion movies appear to be trash, but then thought the Goombas would step into minion role which could be fun. Goombas reactions in Odyssey genuinely made me laugh.

  4. Oh why would they use Illumination to make the movie?! This is just as stupid as when they thought using Namco to make Metroid Prime 4 was a good idea. Illumination has only ever made half-decent movies at best and regularly make that minion garbage.
