Sakurai says the second Fighter Pass will be last DLC for Smash Ultimate

super_smash_bros_ultimate_art

The hardworking Masahiro Sakurai has taken to his Famitsu column to proclaim that the Fighter Pass Vol.2 will be the final batch of downloadable content for the excellent Super Smash Bros Ultimate. He also went on to say that the characters themselves are chosen by the team at Nintendo and that he has no plans for a new Super Smash Bros game in the future.

  1. Thank… goodness. I don’t want Sakurai to waste his talent on Smash anymore. Don’t get me wrong I love Ultimate, I can’t think of anyone other than Sakurai taking the helm of this ship, but he could/should be doing so much more in terms of game design, I want to see a completely new IP from Sakurai.

    1. Absolutely 100% there will be a new Smash eventually with or without Sakurai. Too much money on the table. There’s a legitimate argument that it would be legally actionable negligence against the investors for Nintendo to *not* take a giant pile of money where it so clearly exists.

That said, I have no idea what you even do to evolve Smash at this point other than just adding characters/stages. Sakurai explored the limitations of the design pretty thoroughly.

    2. You can partly blame Sakurai himself for this. He’s the one that keeps saying yes when they ask him to make another Smash. Like Zelda & Mario, this franchise is a money maker & it will continue on without their initial creator sooner or later. Hopefully this time Sakurai at least trained someone under him to take his place as Smash’s lead developer just like Miyamoto did with Zelda & Mario before he left those franchises in the hands of others.

  2. I’m not sure why, but i kind of am getting to notion of possibly getting an Undertale rep. I know it’s an old game and all, but say they added Frisk and Judgement Hall to pair with the Sans Mii outfit? All the tracks in the game would transport really well, and at least it’d be something unexpected. Plus, oddly enough, there wasn’t an Undertale spirit board when the Sans Mii came out, but there was a Cuphead spirit board when the Cuphead Mii did. I’m not saying it’s likely or anything, but it’s possible they could be saving that for later? What do you guys think

  3. I’m going to be honest here; I really think Smash Bros should end with this game.
Think about it; With every single new game in the series, the total number of fighters and stages has always surpassed the previous game but with how much of a bar this game has set, there is literally no way they could make a game that surpasses this 1. Not only is the roster starting out with a massive 69 characters which has since been pushed up to 75 and 6 more on the way, but also is quite literally a real-life dream roster with even things like Cloud, Banjo Kazooie, Sonic, Snake, and so on. How the heck can Sakurai and Nintendo hope to top that? Short answer: They simply can’t.
Because of this; Anything that comes out after this game will likely be deemed inferior and thus will likely not make as much money, I already know that unless the next game features some absolutely gob-smacking characters like Isaac, Vivi, Waluigi, or Dante make it in, I may actually not end up buying it especially if the roster is less than 30 characters.

If not a full end, at the very least I think the series should take a long break and instead just let other franchises get some attention like F-Zero or Golden Sun.

    1. lol, Golden Sun and F-Zero are long dead. I learned to stop hoping for their return ages ago. Nintendo only cares about money, they don’t care about reviving series for fans because they don’t think it’ll bring them profit. They only know how to think “Short Term” like most companies and can’t see the bigger picture. But Ultimate can easily be surpassed with a sequel. Another smash game after this, that has a proper stage builder with more space, the option for objects like Brawl had, more design choices. If it had a better and longer story mode than WoL (The spirits were meh for me since they just got repetitive and boring after a while), Bring back Custom Moves from Wii U, they could use spirits and assist trophies as actual “assists” mid-battle. You can top the roster by adding other gaming icons they didn’t make it to ultimate (Crash, Doomguy, Master Chief, Dante, Leon S.Kennedy, Rayman, etc) Ultimate still has it’s flaws and missed opportunities that can easily be picked up and improved by a sequel, among a plethora of other new additions.

But the series should definitely take a break now. I’d love to see Sakurai start working on his own stuff and some more kirby.

It’s not really as simple as you say though. Considering the Nintendo Switch is a massive success, it’s likely going to be around for a good while so by the time the next system drops, there will likely be a major leap in hardware power. And with better hardware comes the possibility of much better graphics but with better graphics means we need better character models.
Sakurai himself has said that when it comes to this game he had 2 options which were to either start from scratch and rebuild everything but in a higher quality than before or to recycle what we already have and build upon that. Clearly he went with the latter but I’d be willing to bet that if the Nintendo Switch had come much later and would have boasted more powerful hardware, he may very well have gone with option 1.
On top of that; There’s copyrights to consider. Smash Bros Ultimate has a pretty good chunk of 3rd party reps and there’s no guarantee they would be able to get the rights again. I can see characters like Terry, Ryu, Megaman, and Pac-Man coming back because they are owned by companies that are on good terms with Nintendo but Banjo Kazooie? Snake? Simon? Cloud? I’m not so sure.
This is pretty much what happened with Street Fighter V and Tekken 7. If they had taken Street Fighter IV and Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and built upon them and called them the next entry in the series, people would not be happy simply because the visuals would look out of date especially when compared to games like Injustice 2, Monster Hunter World, and Final Fantasy 15. This is why they rebuild everything from scratch but the cost was a major cut to the total character count.

      2. “Nintendo only cares about money, they don’t care about reviving series for fans because they don’t think it’ll bring them profit. ”

If there were a bunch of fans for Golden Sun and F-Zero, it would be profitable to bring them back. Its a self defeating point.

” Another smash game after this, that has a proper stage builder with more space, the option for objects like Brawl had, more design choices. If it had a better and longer story mode than WoL”

You can use this argument for anything. “Game X would be improved if it had more content.”

      3. @cronotose “Nintendo only cares about money, they don’t care about reviving series for fans because they don’t think it’ll bring them profit. ”

If there were a bunch of fans for Golden Sun and F-Zero, it would be profitable to bring them back. Its a self defeating point.

why are you telling me this???? That’s why I said it lol. They’re not gonna get revived because Nintendo thinks they won’t make any money from it. All you did was state the obvious and what was already said, what was your point exactly?

” Another smash game after this, that has a proper stage builder with more space, the option for objects like Brawl had, more design choices. If it had a better and longer story mode than WoL”

You can use this argument for anything. “Game X would be improved if it had more content.”

Again, why are you saying this??? They said ultimate can’t be improved, therefor I said what features could be improved. You saying “You can use this argument for anything” Doesn’t make sense. No duh you can use that argument for anything. That’s WHY I said it lol. Again, you’re stating the obvious, nothing new. Don’t take any offense by any of this, but wtf was your point?

      4. +London Wright

“why are you telling me this???? That’s why I said it lol.”

        You’re not following.

There aren’t any fans to abandon. If there were, they wouldn’t need to abandon them. Hence, your complaint is fundamentally ridiculous. If they announced a new IP, that IP would, day 1, have as many or more fans than those dead IP’s. Its sad. I understand disliking reality. It doesn’t stop reality from asserting itself.

“They said ultimate can’t be improved, therefor I said what features could be improved. You saying “You can use this argument for anything” Doesn’t make sense. No duh you can use that argument for anything. That’s WHY I said it”

Again, you’re not following the implications. Think for three seconds before responding. If all you can do with the content is add to it in quantity, you are not improving it in quality.

You know what’s better than a perfect sandwich? Two perfect sandwiches. Does that logic hold true?

You know what’s better than one Rocky movie? 7 Rocky movies. That’s totally better than one.

To put it in more directly comparable terms, if they continued to make sequels on the basis you have constructed, design progression would screech to a halt. You would be looking at tiny improvements, released in nearly identical packages. You would have an EA “game”. Hey, wanna play Smash 2022? No. I bought last year’s. Its basically the same game.

Now if you’re a die hard smash enthusiast, you probably wouldn’t care and would buy them all anyway. Smash’s core demo though is no the die hard enthusiast. Its the casual guy blown away by the novelty of what they’re seeing. Tiny iterative improvements would kill the excitement for the game. Excitement for the game is the best asset of the IP as far as Nintendo is concerned. A new Smash, right now, could be the killer app launch title for any new platform. If you constantly released extremely similar games though? That would be dead in about half a decade.

More is not better. Better is better.

      5. @cronotose “There aren’t any fans to abandon. If there were, they wouldn’t need to abandon them.”
But there are fans….I’m a fan of it, there’s thousands of fans for Golden Sun and F-Zero. Idk if you were trying to make an exaggeration to get your point, but this statement right here is very incorrect. Fix it. My complaint isn’t fundamentally ridiculous and it was never a complaint to begin with. I love Golden Sun and F-zero, but I know they’re never gonna get revived because Nintendo doesn’t see any profit in it. Again, how is that a complaint? It’s not “Disliking reality” either lol. It’s called accepting the truth that those games are never gonna get sequels. So again, your statement was incorrect. I read, thought about my response, and responded. You on the other hand read it, thought about it, and still mixed my words around to your benefit.

“If all you can do with the content is add to it in quantity, you are not improving it in quality.”

Again, you’re the one here who’s not paying attention. My exact words were “Ultimate still has it’s flaws and missed opportunities that can easily be picked up and improved by a sequel, among a plethora of other new additions.” Did I say “only additions to quantity”? No I didn’t. I said the game has flaws and can still be improved as well as gain a plethora of additions. Maybe you didn’t understand the words here so I’ll explain. “Improving flaws” aren’t quantity, they’re quality. I said a “plethora” of additions, which doesn’t mean a small amount to the point where the game is identical. Plethora means “a large or excessive amount of (something).” I never said a small amount of improvements or additions. I specifically said, there’s a plethora of new stuff that can added and fixed upon. You’re the only person here who said “tiny improvements” “Nearly identical game”, you’re the only person here implying small additions. You’re trying to make an argument where it’s not even necessary. You’re trying to insult and degrade me by saying I don’t know how to think before I write, but I do so your insults are negligible. You’ve only taken my words, mixed it around, and added new words that no one said, all to benefit your point. Since you clearly ignored that part in my first comment I’ll say it again. Smash Ultimate still has flaws that can be picked up and improved by, among a “plethora” of new additions in a sequel. There’s a plethora of things that can be improved, changed, added to make the game different and not “identical” to ultimate. Next time, before you try to start an argument, learn how to “quote” someone’s words before you try to correct them. Cause all you did was half-ass quote my words, and add your own words which I never said.

      6. @cronotose You saying there’s no fans to abandon when there’s clearly fans of golden sun and F-Zero is the “fundamentally ridiculous” comment. If F-Zero and Golden Sun didn’t have fans, then captain falcon wouldn’t be in the smash roster, and Issac wouldn’t be an assist trophy, let alone have their own music tracks in the game. Whether you were saying that as an over exaggeration or not, it’s rejecting reality.

I get the analogy you’re trying to use by saying they’ll keep making more games with tiny improvements and it’s like movies that never end (Rocky 7, Fast and Furious 10, etc). You’re exact words were “To put it in more directly comparable terms, if they continued to make sequels on the basis you have constructed, design progression would screech to a halt.”

But I never said “sequels”. I said “sequel”. 1 game to end the series. If they keep making more games after ultimate, then clearly they become identical after a certain point, but I never said more games either. I specifically said sequel, as in 1 final game to end the series, which has a “plethora” of improvements, changes, and additions. Here is another example of you half-ass quoting my words, half-ass interpreting those words, and adding your own words to benefit your point. I said only 1 sequel to end the series, not “sequels”. You see how changing just 1 word that someone said can greatly alter the meaning? Of course you do, that’s why you did it. You changed my words around to benefit your point, thinking I really wouldn’t catch up on that and call you out for it. So now this Discussion is closed. Your point, nowhere to be seen. Have a nice day :)

  4. Ok so we know who to target and threaten now for not getting good, balanced, and proper indie reps in that game.

Also he should retire after this. God, they’re working him harder than a sick chinese employee, no wonder he’s been making bad calls on letting Nintendo head how that game goes.

    #RetireSakurai
    #ImpeachShuntaro

    1. This sounds less like a coherent argument, and more like you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Take a nap.

  5. I wonder how they would make a sequel. Like… yeah… there are more characters too add… Maybe they will do as LoL or something. Have to grind up characters or pay up for them.

      1. I guess better graphics and keep adding characters and stages, but it’s going to be hard to keep the game balanced that way + keep all the licensing. The nightmare scenario would be loot box unlock. Need to get the same character multiple times to unlock all the colour variations xD

      2. Sorry, you’ve used up all of your stock. You can wait 25 minutes to receive one additional stock, or spend 500 shine gems to unlock 10 stocks.

You purchase shine gems at a rate of $2 for 200 gems, or $7 for 725.

  6. Maybe you filthy americans are the ones making all the shitty edgy comments for attention. I’m just speaking hard facts here. Let the man retire already before they work him to death!

  7. Well,Sakurai did say that there won’t be a new game for a while after this one. So, looks like people is going to have to wait for a long time for a new Smash Bros game. I’m still hoping for Shantae and Tails to make it in perhaps.

    1. +SonicGalaxy27
Aww dude, I’d flip my mind if Tails was announced. If my icon isn’t clear enough; I have a deep love for foxes.

  8. Even after this final DLC, I still plan on working on Super Smash Bros. Infinity (a growing mod that encompasses all the content from each of six SSB games).

Yes, I know this sounds like stupid ingrate fanboy fluff, but I have to plan ahead, even after Sakura ends content and moves on from Smash (while the Switch is still relevant). Unlike everyone else, I don’t put all my blind faith in one individual to fulfill my SSB wishes.

Even if Sakurai has given us every returning SSB veteran, along with Ridley, King K. Rool, and Banjo-Kazooie, there are still other characters I wish to make a reality, such as NiGHTS, Klonoa, Wario-rep Waluigi, Yoshi-rep Birdo, 9-Volt, Decloned Lucina/Chrom, Echo Fighter Dr. Mario, Decloned Pichu who uses TMs/Egg Moves, balancing the number of each rep per third-party company, etc.

Consider that Sakurai won’t fulfill any of these, that’s why we have a modding community. Or else, these and other similar ideas just won’t exist. We know that Sakurai/Nintendo won’t support these games forever, but that doesn’t mean that Smash Ultimate should never see content ever again.

The upside is that unlike Smash for Wii U/3DS, we don’t have to worry about cut veterans making it into the final pack.

      1. She is, along with Leon and Panther.

However, please take note that this I have zero modding/programming skills. This is just a concept in writing (with some 3DS character icons to give a visual idea of what the roster would look like, rather than a list of random names the internet has mentioned countless times.

  9. I still want there to be another smash game in the future or, at least, another big Nintendo crossover. I never want that concept to die.

  10. And I’m okay with that. Ultimate is already so massive, it can only get so much bigger. The game is already well-enough designed and has enough content that the series could take a loooooong break before a new installment and people will still be playing it during that hiatus.

I doubt Ultimate will be the last Smash ever, but it will be the last for awhile- Smash is too much of a moneymaker to leave it alone for several console generations.
