Update 2: E3 2020 has now officially been canceled due to coronavirus

Update: Bloomberg is now reporting that, indeed, E3 2020 will be cancelled due to the coronavirus. An official announcement will be made around 12:30pm Eastern time on March 11th. The ESA has sent a private memo to their partners that they are “exploring options for an online E3 event this summer”.

The status of E3 2020 has been a huge uncertainty, thanks to the outbreak of the coronavirus. Recently, the ESA has been trying to reassure fans and the gaming industry as a whole that the show will go on. Unfortunately, it seems that things are about to change. Multiple companies and journalists are now reporting on Twitter that E3 2020 is going to be cancelled. Some say that the official decision hasn’t been made just yet, while others say that the official word could come as early as tomorrow morning. There’s even speculation that “the term ‘cancelled’ may be nebulous”.

Regardless of the official word, it is not looking good for E3 2020. And the general consensus is to “cancel your plans”. If it’s not happening, companies, including Nintendo, will have to adjust accordingly. It is unknown if there would still be a week in June dedicated to press conferences, video presentations and live streams, but it’s not impossible. When the official word is made, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, a tweet relaying the news is down below.

  1. Nintendo always have their presentations digital, plus they can have the treehouse live recorded somewhere else so this doesn’t really affect them, as for the virus, I hope there’s a cure soon for it because if this keeps up we might all be trap in our houses by the end of the year

  2. How disappointing. Nintendo could do a June Nintendo Direct in some form. But, who knows. Maybe now Nintendo always has a option on coming up with plan B with there E-3 game reveals if this gets cancelled.

  3. They really think the virus is still going to be this out of control three months from now? Perhaps this is more serious than I thought. I don’t recall previous pandemics like Ebola, Zika, or H1N1 causing this much of a ruckus.

    1. You should take it seriously but that doesn’t mean you need to panic or expect things to go out of control. Just be conscientious about personal hygiene and follow any guidelines set your local are.

  4. Sad to see but measures like this are important to at least slow the spread of the virus. It’ll be interesting to see how Microsoft and Sony react to the cancellation of the event; will they postpone and we don’t see anything or will they hold their conferences/Treehouse Live stream remotely?

  5. I’ll believe it when I see it. Too many self proclaimed leaders have been crying wolf since January. I’m starting to think we won’t get anything until June.

  6. This virus crap is crazy. Stores are completely selling out of water, sanitizer (including Lysol), and even toilet paper from what I’ve heard. I simply wanted a couple gallons of water, and I had to go to maybe 5 stores before I finally found some. Wal-Mart’s shelves were empty where the gallons of water and Lysol goes. I hope this virus gets cured FAST. Because gallon water is all I drink. I refuse to drink the tap water.
