Video game sales figures are beginning to come out of Japan today and it is clear that Nintendo has cause for celebration during these troubling times as the recently released Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch family of systems has shifted a massive 1.88 million copies in just three days. The game sold a total of 1,880,626 copies and 392,576 Nintendo Switch systems were sold. To put this in perspective the previous mainline Animal Crossing game Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the Nintendo 3DS sold 721,786 copies at launch and the company shifted 168,662 Nintendo 3DS units that week in Japan.

  1. Just to put these figures into perspective, that’s about double what the original Animal Crossing on Gamecube ever sold in Japan. It’s about the same as the original Animal Crossing ever sold in the USA. It got there in 3 days.

We are realistically looking at an opening weekend for Animal Crossing close to 10 million sales worldwide which is nothing short of insane. All I can say is, congratulations, it’s a great game and well deserved, now never take 7 years between games again!
