Nintendo is closing down the Wii U & 3DS eShops for 42 Latin America & Caribbean countries on July 31st, 2020

Gamers in Latin America and the Caribbean are about to see a major Nintendo-related closure later this year. Nintendo has announced that, starting July 31st, 2020, they will be closing down the Wii U and 3DS eShops in the region. On July 31st, players in 42 countries will no longer be able redeem download codes, redownload software, or update software. Nintendo is encouraging players to redeem any codes they have before the date arrives. Nintendo explained that these countries have “limited Nintendo eShops for the Wii U system and Nintendo 3DS family of systems” that have “provided a few basic functions, such as game code redemption”. Mexico has a full Nintendo eShop, so they are not affected by this closure. As for Brazil, Nintendo says that “Brazil has a full Nintendo eShop for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems and has neither a full nor limited Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system”.

  1. Wouldnt that game code redemption still prevent them from redownloading their games in an event where an sd card goes bad after the close these eshops?

This would mean you completely lose access to your purchases if i am not mistaken. So to say limited or basic function is not exactly aa basic as it sounds.

    1. Ih dear I downloaded some games on the Wii U like Dr. LUIGI, Donkey Kong 64(for some stupid reason Nintendo wont put N64 games on Eshope) Smash Bros. Super Mario 64, Starfox 0 and Doneky Kong Tropical Freeze. Are you saying my games will be erased?

      1. No, they won’t.
They will stay on your console, however if you delete them you won’t be able to redownload again since the Shop is down.
Meaning if your console breaks, the games are gone.

    2. I agree, is what I’d say but for the first time in my life I’m digital only on my Switch. I don’t like fumbling around that much on the console to change the game.
Also: I feel like they are ripping the physical-copy people off. They give you the whole package with only the game in it.
No manual, nothing. Kinda feels like a rip-off

        1. No, but the support clips imply that I was entitled to at least something being there.
The fact that it isn’t makes the packaging seems useless for that little piece of plastic and the inside of it hollow.
Hence I’m entitled to complaining about something I’m not statisfied with after buying it. More so why I went digital only for the Switch.

        1. I mean come on, they clearly intended to have some sort of manual or at least SOMETHING in there.
They even have these support clips that clearly indicate that something needs to be there.
It looks fucking empty when you buy some shit like that. It doesnt even need to be a manual, at least put something in there like XBOX and PS4…

  2. The eShop in our region has always been a joke, and everybody that I know puts that they live in the US (or even Canada). I myself put that I live in Miami

The people that DID put their real country will be able to hack their consoles without any major repercussion now since the eShop won’t work anyways

  3. as nintendo had a track record of backwards compatibility I went into the wiiU with the mindset that digital downloads would surely play on future consoles. thousands of dollars locked to my aging mechanical parts and this is what they do next 3 years after official production stops? wow.

  4. It’s kind of stupid of Nintendo when the NX was in R&D why they didn’t transfer the Wii and Wii U’s eshop to the Switch when NX was in R&D in 2014. I mean Wii Eshope had Turbo Grapfix and Sega Genesis.

Why they not improve the Eshope each generation yet they instead make it worst that’s stupid. They had 15 years to work on this from Wii to Switch. And it is also stupid why when the NX was in R&D why wouldnt they think to put Netflix on the Switch after Wii and Wii U had it?

When a Nintendo console is in R&D do they even think of the future while working on a future console?

And lately, why didnt they think of putting Gamecube and N64 on Switch’s Eshope? They had 5 years to work on that while Wii U was on sale. That was stupid right there. Some things Nintendo does in R&D is stupid. Especially when Wii U was in R&D in 2006 why would they hardly more power than the 360 and PS3 when they knew that Sony and Microsoft was coming out with more powerful systems after that. That’s why the Wii U failed. They wasnt thinking of the future when project cafe was in R&D.

    1. Right, because it has such a wonderful video game library.

Let’s just say that the Switch opened the door for many franchises that were dormant or PlayStation-exclusive for years. The Crash and Spyro trilogies plus CTR are a few examples. And don’t even get me started on Yooka-Laylee and Cuphead.

  5. Considering the world at Large may still be sheltering in place until then or possibly even longer, this feels very poorly-timed. I don’t agree with shutting it down at all, but if they must, they ought to at the very least hold off until this crisis is over.

  6. Nintendo has to make a permanent eshop where you buy games once and play them on all future consoles. I usually buy physically, but some indie games are digital. There’s no excuse that from now on digital Switch games won’t be compatible with Switch 2 (3, 4…), as Nintendo now uses mainstream hardware.
