Western version of Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town allows same-sex marriages

XSEED Games has announced in a recent blog post that the upcoming western release of the long-awaited Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town will allow same-sex marriages, which is a first for the game. The Japanese version has the “Best Friends” system but this didn’t allow for marriages. The remake will include a romantic affinity indicator which displays all marriage candidates from the start of the game. Here’s the details direct from the blog post and the game is out 10th July in Europe and this summer in North America.

“In our version, [the “Best Friends” system] will just be called ‘marriage,’ and the relationship between same-sex couples will be given identical treatment to opposite-sex couples. This has been a very long time coming in the Story of Seasons series, and the producer has been supportive of our decision from very early in development.”

“One minor but important change for the North American and European releases of Friends of Mineral Town is that the ‘heart icon’ indicating a marriage candidate’s romantic affinity for the player will display for all marriage candidates from the start of the game, where in the Japanese release it will only display for same-sex candidates after you confess and start dating.”

      1. Asexuals still get married.

I was just being a smartass but actually I kind of would appreciate that. Seems like every NPC not in a relationship is a candidate in these games and thus you get flirty dialogue from all of them leading up to the threshold of marrying them. It’s just weird when everyone (single) in town is acting like they are crushing hard on you and flirting and dropping hints.

    1. The more something becomes common in culture the less people care. Only few years ago people would literally praise others for common out Gay, but the amount of people who do the praising decrease year over year. It’s cause a small handful of people trying to come out as something and then they get upset when they don’t get anywhere near as much attention as some people where getting during the middle of the decade.

  1. Buying the game mostly because of nostalgic reasons, but all of this garbage is really off-putting. The Japanese do know what time it is tho. Acknowledging this nonsense but leaving it open to interpretation. Normal Americans getting “progressiveness” in our escapes (entertainment) shoved down our throats again.

  2. I’m really hoping to get the game-link unlockables. That’s what I really want to know about.
As for the whole sexuality thing, I’ll probably just stick to wooing the same two girls and one goddess.

And I really hope that they didn’t fix it so you cannot use the save/reload mining trick.

    1. The whole best friend thing is actually how SS relationships work in Japan. Many people think that since Anime loves to throw in Gay characters that means Japan recognizes Gay relationships, but they don’t. Those type of relationships get a different status in Documents

  3. I hope they allow you to have more than one child. If I’m not mistaken, the original only allowed you one because of hardware limitations

  4. Was thinking on getting this because I heard it’s one of the better ones in the series, but it looks so cheaply made. Maybe I’ll just pick up the GBA original. Anyone here know what this new game adds on top of the old one to offset how ugly it is?
