New Paper Mario adventure Paper Mario: The Origami King coming to Nintendo Switch on 17th July

Looking to add an extra dimension to your adventures? Are you ready for your fun to in-crease tenfold? Well, a special invitation to a colorful, paper-crafted world has arrived. Princess Peach is welcoming Mario and Luigi to attend the kingdom’s origami festival when the Paper Mario: The Origami King game launches exclusively for the Nintendo Switch family of systems on July 17.

There’s one tiny wrinkle in the festivities, though: Princess Peach seems a little strange. To learn more about her mysterious behavior, you can view a debut trailer for the game by visiting https://papermario.nintendo.com/#trailer. It seems as if King Olly, who claims to be the ruler of the Origami Kingdom, has hatched a devious plot that endangers everything Mario holds dear. It looks pretty dangerous on paper, so someone who’s a cut above the rest is needed to save the day!

“Paper Mario: The Origami King delivers a grand new adventure on Nintendo Switch for players to wrap themselves up in,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This game marks the debut of the Paper Marioseries on Nintendo Switch, expanding the vast library of games with another standout entry in a beloved franchise.”

Mario faces one of his most thrilling challenges yet in Paper Mario: The Origami King when the dangerous King Olly unleashes his plan to fold the entire world. Just when matters couldn’t get worse, he’s bound Princess Peach’s Castle in giant, colored streamers and transported it to a distant mountain. He’s even transformed Bowser’s minions into Folded Soldiers and enlisted them in his treacherous cause.

Luckily, Mario is equipped with a range of new tools at his disposal to help secure victory. One of Mario’s new abilities, called 1000-Fold Arms, allows you to interact with the landscape by stretching out and pulling, peeling and revealing new locations, helping you to solve puzzles and uncover unexpected surprises. Along the way, you’ll enlist the help of characters old and new, such as King Olly’s good-natured sister, Olivia, along with a range of unlikely allies, including Bowser himself! If they haven’t yet folded to the whims of King Olly’s origami will, Mario will accept all the help he can find with open arms!

Paper Mario: The Origami King also introduces a new ring-based battle system that lets you flex your puzzle-solving skills to line up scattered enemies and maximize damage. While the enemies may be crafted from paper, these dynamic, turn-based battles are far from stationary. It’ll require a sharp mind to make short work of these crafty enemies.

With a detail-rich world to explore, off-the-wall mini-game events and countless mysteries waiting to be solved, the next joyful Mario adventure on Nintendo Switch is ready to deliver huge helpings of crafts and laughs.

For those who want to begin their adventure as soon as the game launches, pre-purchase is now available.

  1. It just looks the same as stick star and color splash…but with an origami theme and battle system 🤣

Hard pass. I swear nintendo folks on twitter and hyping themselves to hell and back for this game just because they have nothing else to play

    1. Really didn’t get that at all, other than graphically it’s very similar to Color Splash which is no bad thing. The world looks much bigger and not split into levels which was the biggest thing I hated about the last two.

    2. Unfortunately, that’s the sad reality (especially come December 2020).

It’s a good thing that I’ve been brainstorming Paper Mario 3 for a while now. Hopefully, the game itself won’t piss me off or throw in cheap sections that keep me from beating it, let alone 100% completion.

Maybe we can get some form of mileage in an NPC Toad count.

  2. Well, all those “reliable leakers” are going to be hit by a storm of angry fans because they specifically said it wouldn’t be Color Splash style, but TTYD Style….. This is clearly CS style. It being CS style doesn’t immediately mean it’s a mediocre game, but it’s still going to be a major disappointment to people after they got their hopes up.

    1. They’ll probably just say “but m-muh partners :(” as their excuse for why this *obviously* doesn’t count this time, unlike the last two times XD some nintendo fans are too easy to please.

  3. Oh wow, this looks really promising! I don’t want to get my hopes up just yet but I saw what looked like much bigger areas to explore, no map screen traversal and no cards/stickers in the battle system. It looks really cool, dare I say it looks like a return to form.

  4. I actually really enjoyed color splash! The humor and the great world building and nice music all came together into a really good game. Of course, I agree that the combat system in that game was a bit of a flop, but I think people are too quick to dismiss color splash as a mediocre game! I’m glad to see another paper mario game that takes after it , even if everyone else is a bit annoyed.

    1. I really liked it too but I really hated the way the world felt disconnected with selecting levels on the map screen. I know it’s a small thing really but love the way the first two games world’s were connected.

I have seen the trailer. It seems the battle system is back from the original game.

Yes, but what if you have to choose the command like in the N64 game?

      1. You should read the press release in this article. It talks about it being a brand new battle system. Also from the official website:

        NEW ABILITIES… AND NEW BATTLES!
Use the 1,000-Fold Arms ability to extend your arms to interact with the environment and solve puzzles. In battle, line up scattered enemies and plan your attack to maximize damage with the new, ring-based battle system that requires both puzzle-solving skills and a quick wit.

Yes after watching the trailer for the third I noticed that the battle system seems a sort of fortune wheel.

    2. It looks like it’s a ring based battle system. Where you rotate the ring to attack rows of enemies. And it also shows the place where you choose your attack. And it was an option, not a card. You select boots as like your standard attack. And since they are called shiny boots, it makes me think that possibly different types of boots is back. Sort of like badges but maybe more gear like.

    SAMUS?!

        Yes…YES!

    1. ||Remember that the paper Mario series is also produced by lord Tanabe, that is a nod to him…</i||

I didn’t see it. I’ll check it out again.

  6. Cool!
    Looks nice.
I wonder if we could have paper Mario with those arms for smash.
    The dahlsm of smash

  7. Welp… weird thing to wake up to. I don’t think it will be a bad game but it pretty much confirms the death of Story Mario and the continuation of literal Paper Mario.

But yeah… Color Splash was alright. Very beautiful. This probably will be a good game but will just have the stigma of not being Melee.

    1. I’d also like to throw in my prediction that this was not an E3 trailer and, instead, E3 was going to be when they unveiled this new battle system and let people demo it. That’s why there’s barely any footage of it in this trailer. They wanted to do the story first and then explain this new battle system in two steps.

      1. Actually, I guess it could have been an E3 trailer and then they show off how the new battle system the following days via treehouse live. That actually makes more sense. Anyways… their plan now is to do it in two steps it seems.

  8. You know, when this whole Covid-19 lockdown thing started I found out that I had gotten Paper Mario: Color Splash from the library before. I started playing it, but slowly moved away to ACNH. I guess I’ll just finish it and then Paper Mario: The Origami King will be right around the corner. I know I entered the gaming world with a Wii U, but I hold the Paper Mario series very close to my heart. I think this game looks promising. Can’t wait!

We learn sonething new today. Never trust rumours 100%

      1. It seemed very promising because the rumor came around the time Miyamoto said he wanted to be more lenient with the Mario franchise. Alphadream now being defunct which means no more Mario and Luigi RPG titles, and Paper Mario devs saying Color Splash was made before they heard Stick Star’s feedback also added to it.

    2. Wouldn’t be surprised if they just found out that stickers and paint wasn’t returning so they just assumed it would go back to the traditional system vs them making a brand new battle system.

      1. They really should’ve thought that another gimmick was probably going to replace them and not assume it would be like the original two games. We still don’t have any unique designs to the characters, which is the other problem with the current direction.

        1. I think it might be good. We might not have permanent partners (other than the story partner, the sister of the villain) but it might regularly cycle party members. Plus it seems Bowser’s forces and Mario are teaming so that gives a fresher dynamic than all the generic-ish Toads.

I honestly think this will end up being a good game. I’m said that they are abandoning the traditional RPG style but… at least they seem to be trying harder to make something more unique with the paper aesthetic.

  10. the paper aesthetics and quirky elements are fine, but I think one reason people are so much more fond of the first 2 games and Super more then the last two, has some elements to do with not focusing so much on the story itself being about paper craft type stuff. From the title alone, I can already get a sense of what will probably be the direction the story takes and its characters, something I could not say about Thousand Year Door and HELL not able to predict the plot of Super

    1. Origami King falls clearly seems to fall in between the two doesn’t it? Watching the trailer I saw WAAYYY more opportunities for interesting narrative than Color splash or sticker star

  11. I’ve commented a lot but I wanted to let anyone know that it’s already up for prepurchase on the eshop and also gives some more plot detail in the listing.

The one I’m worried about is Mario’s partner is apparently the villains sister so… I’m really hoping we’re not getting another Kersti-type. That partner was so charmless and annoying imo

  12. jesus why did they even bother? what is this crap. i really got excited too. how is it that every first party switch game just went all out in every way they could. but somehow they still made this? its like nintendo wants the series to fail. sticker star was crap enough, i couldnt bother with color splash, and im gunna have to pass on this too. shame

  13. I am not understanding the complaints about this being like color splash…No this doesn’t look like a return to form ala TTYD but it looks like there is much more narrative to follow than there was in color splash or sticker star. I also personal don’t think it has to be the same battle system as TTYD in order to be just as fun. What I’ve seen so far is promising, but that’s just it. Idk how you could already be disappointed by this.

    1. It’s because the art style is color splash’s art style…that’s it. Everything else in the gameplay as you said is a return to form mostly.

  14. Being in the minority who played Color Splash, I can’t say the game looks way better than many Wii U games and def better than the overglorified TTYD.

What remains to be seen is if the battle system is back to classic RPG or if it’s still supporting the hated item/sticker system which put so many people off.

Color Splash has a good story, great environment and plenty of charm and humour. I’m sick of people reducing Color Splash into “bad battle system” and ignore everything else the game excels in.
