Platinum Games boss doesn’t think next-gen will be as “ground breaking” as Nintendo Switch was

Video Games Chronicles recently chatted with Platinum Games head Atsushi Inaba and game director Hideki Kamiya to talk to them about a range of subjects including the next generation of video game consoles from both Sony and Microsoft. Mr. Inaba says that while the next generation will certainly offer impressive visuals he doesn’t see the machines being as groundbreaking as the Nintendo Switch which launched in 2017.

“As an industry, it’s all very promising and I don’t want to be perceived as too negative. But to give another example of my point, the Nintendo Switch was very ground-breaking in how it was able to just to take a home console and make it portable. It’s something that you hadn’t seen a lot of people doing before: it took this wall, that perhaps a lot of people didn’t know even existed, and broke it down.

Switch opened up all these new possibilities. I think the Game Boy and the DS also did that: there were so many surprises in those. If you compare that to when you’re simply seeing graphical improvements or just ‘faster, bigger’… obviously it’s nice, but it doesn’t have that same inventive quality that really surprised me with past consoles.

We haven’t seen everything from next-gen at this point, I think, and it’s still very likely that there could be a quality like that in these consoles that’s going to kind of be a game-changer, that’s going to change how games could be played. And if that is the case, then maybe they’ll blow me away. So I don’t want to sound like, ‘hey, I know everything about the new consoles and they’re boring’. But with the information that I have now, I haven’t seen any extremely big surprises.”

  1. More like the Switch took a portable and made it bulky and cumbersome. The only use I get from handheld mode is playing in bed like the Wii U could do, and the Wii U had Nintendo Land which offered great experiences using the second screen.
I prefer gaming at home because I can’t thoroughly enjoy a game when I’m on the go, so I prefer a console which offers the best experience in the home, which is where the Switch limits itself and things like Wii U gamepads, DDR mats, racing wheels, VR and console horsepower can offer higher quality experiences.

    1. My experience has been different. I play my switch on the tv, but then switch to handheld when someone else needs to use the tv. I bring it with me to my parents house to play with my siblings who also have switches. I’ve played it on the airplane, in the airport, camping, on car rides, and a lot of other places. If I have a choice to buy a game on my high end gaming computer, or my switch, i oftentimes choose my switch just because it is so much easier and comfortable in my opinion.

    2. Stop lying. The Switch has amazing visual ( 1080 P ) and gaming fidelity. Breath of the Wild and the Witcher 3 patched edition are visually and gaming gems on one console. Dragon Quest 11 Definitive edition is life of beauty and wonders. Astral chain, fire emblem three houses, animal crossing new horizons are but three of the other great amazing games the Switch offers. More to come, apart from that it offers portability for those that want it. What does the Xbox have? Everything that the PS4 has but with no exclusives, to miserable ones. Graphics are a great boost, but it is always gameplay, mechanics over graphics, always.

      F=MA.

      1. You just said the Switch is a 1080p console, then went on to mention games which run at sub 1080p on the Switch.
Personally I think it’s a shame that this gen has been all about good games on bad hardware, and garbage on good hardware. I can’t help but wonder what the possibilities could be if the geniuses behind the good Switch games had more to work with.
Perhaps the allure of seeing how much can be crammed into a potato is what motivates them.

I think the industry as a whole has been wasting a lot of potential.

And don’t get me started on how much is wasted in the custom PC market. I’m planning to take a metalworking course just so I can build the first ITX case which doesn’t bottleneck ITX motherboards. I think I’ll also learn to program a custom Windows shell and some apps I want, since I’m struggling to complete my project with existing software.

      1. Don’t get me started with my Ace Attorney IRL edition crossover with Sony.

Actually, please do. We could all use a good laugh.

See my post above yours for a small taste of my disappointment with the PC market.

    3. Well, for my experience, i don’t used the handheld mode much on my Nintendo Switch only if i wanted too. But, i have been using it and brought it with me everywhere i go like Disneyland, Universal Studios, parks and beaches. Beside’s the Nintendo Switch is more cooler and it feels like a dream machine to me. However, some people are bored with the Switch and they are expecting something new from Nintendo like a Switch updates like custom themes and 7-10 minute record time and be posted on YouTube.

    4. Also, you complain about how weak the Switch is… yet it keeps becoming the best selling console… beating out the PS4 and Xbox One for this month and pretty much every month…. 800k does say a lot compared to PS4’s 400k and Xbox Ones 300k in the US ALONE…..

Face it, you’re angry because a Weaker System has better games and has the advantage of being both a portable and a home console.

      1. “Face it, you’re angry because a Weaker System has better games” That’s a pretty accurate summary of what I said.

“has the advantage of being both a portable and a home console.” I’d rather have a separate portable and home console than something than an overglorified PSP which is too cumbersome to carry around.
Even the original GameBoy is more portable. At least that can fit in my handbag,

  2. The Switch has been groundbreaking for me because it has allowed me to get in so much more game time then I could previously, other than when I was a kid obviously. What he says is right, better graphics and faster processing is great but it doesn’t make excite me to any great deal. I have wondered whether the PS5 or XBox would have something more unique or interesting involved as we haven’t seen them fully revealed yet but this kind of implies that they will just be more powerful boxes as we’d expect. Would be good if either of these companies did try something other than the standard as that kind of innovation is good for everyone.

  3. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Platinum games boss is right. Brawl stinks anyway, and I can forgive Sakurai for rejecting Waluigi in Smash 4 because he finally remembered to put in Mega Man. But Sakurai has gone too far for putting in Piranha plant before Waluigi. I might not buy the next Smash bros if Waluigi still isn’t playable.

      1. I can’t remember. I think I made a joke in reply to one of his tweets about blocking someone and he gave an unfunny response and blocked me.

But then I found out it’s just a thing he does and it’s a meme at this point.

  4. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

Nintendo got it right. But at what cost? The failure of the Wii U. Don’t get me wrong the Wii U is a good console but at the time devs didn’t like to develop on this console and look what we got after the mistakes made in the Wii U era.

      1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

Nintendo doesn’t really care about power. From the rumours I have heard the Switch Pro will still use the same GPU but a better CPU. While CPU is important for processing operations this doesn’t mean that the new Switch will have a huge impact on the graphics.

The Wii U is an example. Why the console wasn’t so powerful? Because they started to working on it in 2009 I believe with the architectures of that time you basically don’t expect a very powerful console from Nintendo.

        1. Yeah, i suppose you do got a point there. I realize a few years ago that they don’t care much about power. All they care about is money and there fans. That’s all they care about.

if i have to guess, i would say that Nintendo is gonna bring there next console up for speed and make it more of the greatest console they ever built.

          1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

            Every company cares about money…

  5. DERP of course not. Next gen has always just been more of the same. At least in the past more power made the creation of new type of games possible. But since the ps3 pretty much every game is just the same tech with better graphics. You could make that PS5 demo game on PS3 easily, it just wouldn’t look as nice.I even have my doubt that we will see many high-fidelity games in the future.

    1. Actually, I’m pretty sure the PS3 is why Final Fantasy 14 is full of loading barriers and not a true open world mmo like PC exclusive mmos which were already 6+ years old when it launched.

      1. Less loading is NOT groundbreaking new tech! Of course ps5 will be faster than ps3 noone denies that.

  6. I agree with him wholeheartedly.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m excited for both PS5 and Xbox, but Sony and Microsoft are always singing the same old song and dance with every generation. They bang on about specs as the primary appeal of their machines, whilst de-emphasising gameplay. I mean, they’re STILL basically using the same controllers that have been around for 20 years.

Nintendo – for better or worse – focuses on fresh, new experiences that get people talking. Sometimes they flounder (Virtual Boy and Wii U); but more often than not, they succeed wildly. They are essential to the industry, if only to keep their competitors on their toes.

Not just Nintendo though – VR is producing some amazing stuff, and many indie developers are incredibly creative with their offerings. Even Sony and Microsoft can be creative, with games like Super Bot, Concrete Genie and Dreams from the former, and Project Spark (RIP) and Kinect (RIP) from the latter. Still, Xbox games like Grounded and Everwild look promising.

  8. The Wii U was the prototype for the Switch. It was what Nintendo was trying to do in the 1st place. The only thing is, I wish that the Switch had that Gamepad feature like turning off and on the TV, be able to use it like Rayman Legends and Wonderful 101 and Starfox 0.
