Super Smash Bros Ultimate is getting a Octopath Traveler spirit event

Nintendo has confirmed that there will be a special Super Smash Bros Ultimate spirit event celebrating the second anniversary of Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler. The event begins on Friday 10th July and will contain four spirits from the franchise. If you manage to defeat them in battle you will earn more SP than usual. The spirits are Olberic & Primrose, Tressa & Cyrus, Alfyn & Therion, and H’aanit & Ophilia.

  1. I wonder why they’re paired up as such- after all, the game they come from prides itself on the premise that all eight of its protagonists having their own storyline and reason for questing around the region. I would think each spirit would be individual.

    1. I would assume it is to make it easier to collect them all. Most of these extra spirits that come from different 3rd party games usually come in groups of 4 or 5

      1. I know, but still.

Even more puzzling is the pairings. I think it would have made more sense to pair up the fighters based on the spirits’ abilities in the overworld- their “Path Actions”, as they are (for example, Ophelia has “guide” and Primrose has “allure”; both serve the same function of getting NPCs to follow you, but Ophelia’s only works when she reaches higher levels though it never fails while Primrose’s can be used anytime but has a chance to fail, which can negatively affect the party’s reputation). Putting those two together as a spirit would have made more sense, in my opinion.

  2. Thank goodness. People would complain if their favorite Osteopath traveler wasn’t picked and I doubt they would share a character slot.

  3. I’ve been itching to replay Octopath Traveler. It was a great game.I secretly hoped we’d get an Octopath Traveler fighter who was a 2D fighter that cycled through all 8 character sprites for it’s moves. Incredibly unlikely, I know…. But a man can dream.
