“Nintendo is just masterful at what they do” says Xbox’s Phil Spencer

Phil Spencer, Vice President of gaming at Microsoft, has praised Nintendo while on a live talk show recently. The positive comments were made on ‘Animal Talking’ – an online live talk show hosted by Gary Whitta (games journalist) – where guests play Nintendo Switch title Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Gary Whitta asked Spencer some questions about his thoughts on Nintendo and the Xbox boss had only good things to say about the Kyoto based company. He talks about his fondness for the teams at Nintendo, their thinking behind the software and the hardware, amongst other things. Check out his comments below:

…the pure thing about what Nintendo does, is they think about games, and they think about their hardware and their platform all as one thing, and build those experiences – and I know the teams there pretty well – and I think it’s magical the way they’re able to create a complete Nintendo experience on their devices, and this experience I’m looking at right here, in my hands, on my Switch, is Animal Crossing. From the Switch running it to the game itself to the way you go to other peoples islands…

In entertainment business, you know, most things don’t turn out to be huge successes so there always has to be some amount of surprise, but Nintendo is just masterful at what they do, and I’ve said it before, I think they have the strongest first party pedigree out there and strength, and they’re a jewel for us in the games industry and something we should protect.

  1. Hi nintenmau, I like the article! But isn’t nintendo based in Kyoto? I’ve been to their hq before. Feel free to delete my comment once you’ve made the quick fix!

Well he said the truth about Nintendo. Glab to see others president not be annoying against others game consoles.

It’s also true that Nintendo has a strong first party games but the problem is some IPs are forgotten like F-Zero and Wave Race. I’m hoping to see one of those IPs coming back one day.

    1. Xbox is no better, have all those Rare Ips and still nothing cleaver. If it was up to me, I’d release my lever and bring out Banjo-Kazooie sequels like forever.

It’s not the fault of Xbox. It’s Rare that decided to change direction. They want to work on new IPs instead of the old ones because it’s not the same Rare of the BK days. The only way to get a new BK game is to ask another company to make a BK game.

But we have already a BK spiritual successor which is Yooka-Laylee but people didn’t consider it as a true BK game.

  3. Good words, Nintendo are very unique with their consoles and games. Just look at the sheer quality of botw, just one masterpiece.
I can’t wait for their next initiative step in gaming.

    1. Definition of news:

      a : a report of recent events
“I gave her the good news”

      b : previously unknown information
      “I’ve got news for you”

c : something having a specified influence effect
“the rain was good news for lawns and gardens”

      Sourced from Merriam-Webster dictionary.
I’m so tired of seeing this comment. <- My statement right there is also a form of news, by definition, like it or not. Just because you don't personally care about this article doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way.

  4. What’s Da Dizzneal?

Now that they own the psychonauts ip, and this dude having a good relationship with Nintendo, how about releasing psychonauts the first one on the Switch? Or that Rare compilation, that had some good ones in it. Haven’t touched an Xbox since the 360 and still don’t plan to. Waddup to Phil tho.

  5. There is no such thing as a “games journalist”. Retweeting announcements by games companies is not journalism!

Sometimes I think the Xbox team takes gaming like a joke. Most of the time are just FPS games and that’s it.

      1. All they got to do is tell Rare to make a new Banjo-kazooie game, and then they’ll no longer be lame.

There would be a long line for an Xbox series X, even in Japan where they really slack.

The problem is still the same. Rare seems to work on new IPs instead of the old ones.

They asked a developer compamy to make a new Battletoads game. They did but to me it’s a joke compared to the ones in the 90s.

If they want to make a new BK they better find a good company for do that.

      2. Didnt these fools see the reactions all over the world when the Bear and Bird were in Smash? Yet they still trying to finger out gaming as they continue to crash.

        1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

They saw it as well as Nintendo. But Xbox/Rare wants to make merchandise only of BK…. At least for now.

  6. Phil Spencer should be trying to figure out knowing that seeing Banjo-kazooie on Smash gave fans a big shout. So stupid for them not think Banjo-kazooie would.had made Just what the Series X is all about.

  7. Every time I read articles like this, I always wish it was Sony and Nintendo that had the close relationship. Because I’ve never cared for the Xbox. And Sony has SO many great exclusives. But it’s always great to know that rival companies can get along. I sure wish Microsoft would release RARE Replay on the Switch (physically). That’s the only Xbox/Microsoft game I know of that I wish was on the Switch. Aside from Cuphead (physically).

    1. 𝑵𝒊𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒐 𝑭𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝑶𝒓𝒅𝒆𝒓 𝑹𝒆𝒂𝒗𝒆𝒓

Rare Replay was rumoured to be on the Switch one year ago and still now we didn’t get it. I don’t know if we are really gonna get this game.

  8. We all know he’s lobbying. He wants to rally the Nintendo boys from now so they are more inclined to buy an Xbox this holiday season rather than a PS5.

I could see it from a mile away.

  9. I wish RareWare would just let Banjo-Kazooie Go, keeping him from Nintendo isnt going to make them glow.

They arent even doing nothing with the IP, let another gaming devloper use the franchise and when it is done let’s all see.
