Super Mario Galaxy on Nintendo Switch in handheld mode uses touchscreen for pointer

One thing which caused a little bit of confusion earlier today is how Super Mario Galaxy pointer controls will be handled for Switch Lite players. Some people thought that Switch Lite players would have to purchase additional Joy-Cons to use with the game for the pointer functionality. That’s thankfully not true. Polygon reached out to Nintendo for clarification on how the classic game, which is part of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection, works when played in handheld mode. When you play the game docked you can use Joy-Cons or the Switch Pro Controller to replicate the pointer functionality in the game, but when you are playing in handheld mode the Switch touch screen is used for pointer functionality.

Super Mario Galaxy is supported in TV, Tabletop and Handheld Modes. In TV and Tabletop modes, motion controls are required for pointer functionality. In Handheld Mode, pointer functionality has been adapted to use Touch Screen.

  1. No Galaxy 2 is weird but understandable. Galaxy 1 deserves the spotlight even though 2 is an improved game. Might have skipped 1 and gone right to 2 if both were on there.

Speculation: Galaxy 2 for Switch will be announced the same time as the next main Mario game; Galaxy 3. BOOM.

      1. Mario 64 DS is highly unlikely. I watched a video yesterday, sure it was a panel discussion on IGN but they avtually mentioned 3D Land isnt part of the last 3D verse canon. So seems unlikely. I really hope they do it later as DLC

  2. I imagine that might be very hard, or at least cumbersome, to do in handheld mode. Part of why the pointer worked well in Galaxy was that you could move it over objects and interact with them or pick up star bits with it while still moving Mario and playing the game; I don’t think using a touch screen and controlling Mario simultaneously will be effective here.

  3. Grunty is happy to say, Mario 3D World done made my day!

I hope Microsft hears, they should wait next year.
Not having a AAA against the popular plumber is a real bummer.
