Nintendo announces Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity for Switch

Nintendo of America has confirmed this afternoon that there’s a new Hyrule Warriors game in the works by Koei Tecmo Games and Nintendo. The new entry in the series is called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and its due out on Nintendo Switch, 20th November. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity takes place 100 years before the main story of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

“A century before the events of the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game, the Great Calamity occurred. Hyrule was plunged into darkness, devastated by an evil force which transformed the kingdom forever. While the Great Calamity is touched on in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch system, fans have never experienced what happened before that catastrophic event … until now.

In the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity game, which launches exclusively for Nintendo Switch on Nov. 20, players will be transported to the time before the Great Calamity happened, participating in epic battles against a backdrop of familiar locations in Hyrule before they were destroyed. The game stars recognizable characters from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild like Link and Zelda, as well as other characters like the four Champions, who will be playable for the very first time in the Hyrule Warriorsseries.

The debut trailer can be viewed by visiting https://www.zelda.com/hyrule-warriors/.

“Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a must-play for fans of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “Roll up your blue tunic sleeves and get ready for a dramatic and surprising adventure through Hyrulean history this holiday season.”

Hyrule Warriors: The Age of Calamity features gameplay that will be familiar to fans of the Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors games. Focused on performing combos and over-the-top special abilities, the action-heavy gameplay is fast-paced and strategic, perfect for players looking for an intense, non-stop action game with direct ties to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In addition to all the action, the game is loaded with a robust story that depicts the events, relationships and dramatic moments of the Great Calamity in captivating detail.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity finds plenty of inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – not just in its visual style. Many of the most popular and fan-favorite characters from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are playable, including Link and Zelda. In addition to hacking and slashing their way through swarms of enemies to defend Hyrule, players will also solve environmental puzzles, unlock weapons and skills, craft materials, visit shops to obtain items and use the power of the Sheikah Slate, which fans will recognize from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

    1. oh dear god shut the actual hell up, nobody cares about your pessimism, this is the story we’ve been wanting in a game format that is just as valid as the other shit we all play.

      1. My gawd I hope you aren’t repsonding to me, key word “you guys have fun with that” I was basicly saying more power to the zelda fan and hope they enjoy it, everyone knows I’m a regular and that I’m nice and postive on here, just because I don’t like a certain game, or some of nintendo actions doesn’t mean I’m negative

Excuse you? I’ve you’ve played the original Hyrule Warriors you will know that the clone issue is non-existent. Don’t jump the gun and assume all warriors games are like Fire Emblem Warriors.

      1. I played these games before, and me my friends played hyrule warriors and it’s really just not my type, if you guys like it thats cool and awesome, after all everyone has different taste in gaming genres,

I get that, if it’s not for you then it is what it is but saying Hyrule Warriors has a clone issue just isn’t true. If we were discussing Fire Emblem Warriors, a game that reuses a lot of movesets for characters, I’d agree but Hyrule Warriors? Nah.

    1. Pretty much, the A.I. is basically non-existent on these warriors games. On harder difficulties the bosses just hit harder and the npc allies just die faster so you have to babysit them more often if they are objective related.

Wow. Just two weeks ago people were like “Nintendo doesn’t have games for the holiday”.

Nintendo announcing games like this without beign leaked is working great.

Please Nintendo announce an F-Zero game out of nowhere and makes us happy.

      1. hooked up my wii and startet a new F-Zero GX savefile. gota say, this game didn’t really age at all. This is just as much fun as back in the days and there even are still things that look nice. I really don’t believe they can improve on that formula and while I’d love them to get back to FZero, I strongly believe they couldn’t come up with something as good as this was.
But sure, just a HD remake/port would do the trick for the next 20 years.

There is still the rumour of Prime Trilogy and 2D Metroid coming to Switch.

We can expect one of those titles for december 2020?

    1. I only just realized this two days ago:

This year is F-Zero’s 30th anniversary- the original came out in 1990 (1991 in America). I don’t think Nintendo has even acknowledged that; they’ve only been hyping up Mario’s 35th.

  3. Yes yes yes! This is exactly what the first hyrule warriors should have been, playable events from the games lore. Now bring on the war from the start of oot and make the manga canon with the war against demise from skyward sword.

  4. So this is confirmation that the sequel to botw isn’t coming this year… big bummer. No mainline Zelda and no mainline Mario game.

I’m really not a fan of mindless button mashing aka musou games aka 15 frame rate. At least having the Zelda team working on this with Koei Tecmo helps.

Fire Emblem Warriors wasn’t bad. But I understand that not everyone likes this type of games and I won’t complain. Sometimes those musou games are difficult at the beginning and then became easy when you’ll get use to it.

  5. Not a big fan of musou/warriors games but i’m really interested in the story.

I guess i’ll check it for the story but still unsure if i will get at launch, might wait for a price drop first.

Imo I would like to play this Hyrule Warriors since it’s a prequel to BotW.

  6. This is what the Hyrule Warriors series should have been on day 1: playing the events that led up to a mainline Zelda game. For events that don’t have a Link or Zelda involved, just create original characters to act as stand-ins for them. I don’t ever see Ninty having an actual war with large scale battles in a mainline Zelda game, so this is the closest I think we’ll ever get.

    1. If I remember correctly, there was also a big war before the events of Skyward Sword. It was Hylia, her Chosen Hero, and the various races of the surface against Demise and his hordes of demons. Another Warriors-esque game could explore that- Demise’s defeat/transformation into The Imprisoned, Hylia giving up her immortal form, a fragment of land being hoisted into the sky to save the remaining people and later becoming known as Skyloft, etc.
